1. Sounds like the tweeter part is working ok then! Presumably there is some kind of a crossover then. Might be worth checking that one of the components in that isn't cooked. Could potentially be a cheap(ish) fix?
2. Can't you send the speaker off to be repaired? (though the weight might make shipping dear) Someone like Wembley loudspeakers: http://www.wembleyloudspeaker.com/
3. does it have strap locks? Without any tension on the strap they can make an odd quiet rattle (eg playing sitting down)
4. I'm pretty sure the pickups are potted in wax or resin. They should be ok, though the wires may need trimming back if the ends are corroded. With the bridge, the grub screws will probably be rusted in. It might be worth removing and soaking in penetrating oil (WD40 type stuff) before trying to move them.
5. violins have them!
6. The guy at the jazz jam i used to attend played his DB through one and it always sounded fine. You can't go wrong, especially for the money.
7. going to lighter strings you will almost certainly need to slacken the truss rod a bit. You may find the strings rattle a little in the nut if the slots have been cut really large, but will probably be ok.
8. Yes, I understand what you're saying, but the issue when played with the Hofner is only at indoors volumes, apparently. Unfortunately, I don't have both items together, so I can't repeat the exact situation. With my bass it sounds pretty much ok until it is pushed quite hard. I suppose I could string up my Sei with flats again and see if it sound odd in that scenario.
9. if the sound is equally low from both pickups, the problem is more likely to be doswnstream from there, either the volume pot, or the preamp itself (assuming you've eliminated the normal things like cable, amp etc.)
10. Thanks for the replies chaps. Interesting comment about the compressor, I've had it on to varying degrees, thinking it might tame the speaker excursion, but didn't consider it might be causing the distortion. I'll have to try it again soon (at a less antisocial hour...)
11. I sourced this for a friend, so feel kind of obligated to ask on his behalf. It is audibly distorting a bit when played reasonably loud. I used to have one and don't remember it doing this until you REALLY pushed it. He likes a very bassy sound (Hofner Verithin with nylon flats!) and claims it is pretty much unplayable. I confess, I hardly noticed it when I played it, and sounded ok in practice with all the other racket going on. The speaker definitely isn't rubbing and the cab doesnt seem to have any leaks. Played the amp through my compact and it was fine. Is it just that the cab is a bit too small for the speaker and some kind of distortion should be expected? Don't have mine any longer for comparison....
12. If anyone might be interested. They are in good condition, 16 ohm 25 or 30 watts (can't remember!). Highly desirable for guitar, these crop up in many boutique cabs these days, but these are not reissues! I could cough up some photos if there is any real interest. These may be a tad underpriced, I'm not sure! pair for £180 (collected) cheers Jules
13.
The only difference, which of course is based on my opinion, The Beatles had to compete with higher calibre of opposition. On the otherside though, artists of 50 years ago had a better chance of being totally original, as there was not so much music about.
One of the reasons the Beatles did so well was the pop music of the time was mostly dull and awful, and by comparison, they were a bit good.
14. Care to expand on that? Sounds intriguing!
15. Aren't PRS 25.5" scale? plenty of those around and the SE ones are peanuts
16. KlusterFunK (capitalisation optional!)
17. The Body-Lee Funktion
18. Funk in yo' Junk
19. Mutant Funk Experiment (Turns into Mu-Funk [s]once[/s] when you get famous...)
20. I got the Studiospares M1000s recently too, mainly for checking mixes, and they are very nice, especially for only a bit over £50. I would say they have nicer bass extension than the Sennheiser (380 Pro?) set I borrowed for a long while. Good for playing the drums too as the isolation is good.
21. Deep Funk 9 (or any other number, for that matter)
