1. some pictures and dimensions and details about ports and tuning of your speakers would be very useful here....
2.
I cant listen to that Beatles version, the bass is so out of tune its embarrassing!
It's a bit sharp, but that's rock 'n' roll, innit!
3. ...and no faux ostriches were harmed in the making of this thread.
4. Ok it's a fair cop - the birdseye maple matches my ostrich skin handbag!
5.
Nice, very nice. Do you play with your back to the audience ? Garry
it has been suggested!
6. Well, this is the reason. I couldn't let a piece THIS nice just sit around not being used. I haven't seen many necks with more lovely figuring, and the vintage tint just makes it pop: Feel free to post any other nice birdseye eye-candy! sorry for the tease! Jules
7.
Is the maple neck wider than the rosewood. Dave
Nope! they're identical, though when you see them side by side the darker colour does look narrower (hence dark colours make you look slimmer!) Shall I put you out of your misery?
8.
And the point of reviewing lots of products that readers won't come across, or ever use (since I guess more than 75% of basses in action are Fenders) is what exactly? When all is said and done, since the majority use Fender basses, then there should be a lot of Fender content. At least one major review in every edition. Your one in every 100 comment is, in my opinion, worthy of ridicule. Bass mags struggle to succeed and I guess this one will be no different ... if it spends all of its time commenting on the obscure as you suggest.
Why would you want to keep reading about basses you've already got? This is not a rhetorical question.
9.
Felt under the strings sounds different from foam. !
That's a brilliant double bass sound Owen, the clatter of the strings is very authentic. The playing is cool too! Can we see what the dampers look like? I never got foam to sound like this.
10.
You could always replace it with a pic of moonbase alpha! - Didnt Frank Zappa name one of his kids that!
You're thinking of Moon Unit. No relation BTW!
11.
There seems to be an abundance of frets on the Rosewood that the Maple lacks...
that's not it either! the necks are the same, I'm just holding the maple a touch lower, both 24 frets.
12.
only god knows because that birdseye is lovely.. im a sucker for it... always makes a bass look awsome and boutique.. i take it you prefer the slight tone difference....
No, that's not the reason, though there is the slightest hint it is a bit darker sounding. The bass body is maple too, and the necks have graphite rods, so it is quite a bright bass. there is another reason..... (what a tease, eh!)
13. So, I've swapped my lovely birdseye maple fngerboard neck for a plainer Pau Ferro board neck. Why on earth would I do that?
14. Another one here. I think it started with playing the violin at a young age - you don't get left handed violins! I play a drum kit set up right handed but play open handed (lh on the hi-hat) like Simon Phillips, but with nowhere near the same results.... I decided to do it that way mainly that if I ever had to use anyone else's kit I wouldn't have to faff about too much, though the occasion has never arisen, as I'm not good enough to play live!
15. I think you've nothing to lose, the neck's had it anyway so you might as well give it a bash and stand a chance of learning something. If you manage to ruin it even more, it's not like you've lost anything! Do a diary so can all learn vicariously!
16. Mmm, I'd like to see that too. I've played Steve's own basses and they're quite nice - I had to be told they were 35" as they played like "normal" This must be extremely rare, as I don't think Steve made a whole load of 'em. Good luck with the sale! Jules
17. I reckon it will help if you can bolt the pickups more tightly to the body. One of my pickups foam had got too compressed and a bit loose and would squeal at volume. A lot better now with more foam jammed in.
18. I had an odd sound at the nut on open D after i recut the nut slot a bit lower - I'd got the slot angled ok and there was just enough break angle, but it buzzed open, and wasn't immediately obvious why. In the end I worked it out and cut the slot even lower but with a too-narrow round file - the slot was a bit too wide or flat bottomed, and cutting it a fraction deper but narrower gave the string just enough support to stop buzzing when open. This was a very subtle thing, but may be worth checking out in your case.
19. I did a repair on one of these for a friend, and I have to say these aren't bad at all for a decent sounding amp-around-the-house. Not the smallest, but proper bass tone. You can't go wrong for £30 - good luck with the sale.
20. try a Mole Wrench, or Vice Grip (same thing) or find somone who has a metal jawed vice. You'll get plenty of leverage from the length of the neck. I cant see that this would fail to work. Cheers MBA
21.
I don't think he said it needs 1000 watts
Agreed - that implies the cab is not sensitive, which I don't think is the case. There's a difference between needs, and can handle 1000 watts
22. The first "proper" gig I ever did at 16 or 17 ('77/78) at a youth club in Enfield (full PA and lights!) we opened with a cover of Fohat Digs Holes In Space off Camembert Electrique. The punks in the audience weren't that impressed......!
23.
Isn't that what we all do when we hit the stage(?) Isn't that the point(?)
What? and take the showing off work from lead guitarists and singers.... Their Union would be furious!
