Hi Ive been playign double bass for a year and a half or so but had to stop lessons because my fmaily couldnt afford them anymore and i dont want to waste having spent 1200 on a double bass myself. So are their any really good books apart from samindl which i already have that are good and show technique along with excersises. I found simandl good but now that i dont have a teacher to help me in stages. So im looking for a book(s) that are a bit more easy going and focus more on pizz as i feel ill be using this more later on especially when i go to uni. Any help is great. Thanks Sam H
Some in my collection, although along the Simandl lines... "BILLE" "Nuovo Metodo Part 1 published by Ricordi. Simandl's Gradus Ad Parnassum Books 1 and 2. " Eighty Six Studies For String Bass by Joseph Hrabe (arranged and fingered by Franz Simandl).

 3.
Currently not impressed.... These guys have a very slick looking website, and I've seen a few of their covers and they really are great quality. Our guitarist has one and it's very well made. However, I contacted the guys there to make me a cover for my cab over 6 weeks ago. Good communication from them at first, not great, it was usually 48-72 hours to get a reply, but it did come. I eventually plumped to order one with them, and paid via the paypal link I was given. A week later I got an email asking for the exact dimensions of the cab. I had initially sent them a link to the cab on Ashdown's website which had all the specs for it, but the guy wanted me to measure it myself to be sure. Fair enough I thought. 48 hours later I get a response thanking me for the dimesions and telling me it would cost £37.99, which was a bit strange as I'd already paid £39.99 over a week ago. I emailed them my reply along these lines and got a satisfactory response, but a month on I'm still waiting for this cab cover to show up, and the guys there have ceased all communication with me. I've now sent three emails over the past week and a half to two different email addresses and have heard nothing back. I wasn't expecting a quick turnaround, as it would have to be custom made, but a whole month is more than I was expecting, and IMHO there's no need to ignore a paying customer. Speaking to my guitarist it turns out he had similar issues with them, taking a good fortnight's worth of communication to just get them round to making the bloody thing, and then a big wait for it to actually arrive. What's really effed me off now though, is on Friday night I was a bit robust in removing the cab from the van and ended up ripping the tolex. I don't want to put these guys down too much because their covers are very nice, but how long am I supposed to wait for this thing? Paypal give you 48 days to launch a dispute and we're now at around 30 days. If it isn't here on the 47th day I'll have no choice but to claim the funds back.
I would say let them know first that you will start the issue/dispute with Paypal as they may be able to offer a reasonable excuse. If you have not used Paypal's dispute system, it may be safer to would look into that a little bit more before their expiry date.
 4.
Hi guys Any help here would be great. I use a LMII head and a markbass 4x10 4 omh cab. I play in a wedding band so it never anyway loud. Over the past few gigs I have noticed a drop in volume and tone and on Friday night it cut out in the middle of a gig. I turned it off and on and it came back at a really low volume and after a few minutes came back to a normal level. But the cut out a few minutes later. I bypassed it and went straight into the desk for the last few songs. When we finished I checked it and it was really hot and the fan was not working. So I opened it up to let it cool down. Played with the fan a bit and then plugged it back in and the fan came on. But I set it yesterday and left it on all day and the fan worked. Do you think it could be an intermitten fan issue ? I only ever heard of a fan breaking completely not this. I am 300 mile trip from the nearest dealer so it may be a while before I can get it there. I used a friends LMII head last night and the difference in tone and volume was amazing. Also the fact that I am running it with a 4 ohm cab the whole time could that make a difference. I just ordered a new head today and will only ever use this as a back up when I do get it fixed
A 4 ohm cab won't be hurting it especially as you aren't working at high volumes. The fan seems a problem to check out but you say it is working now. Check there isn't any build up of dust around the edges of fan blades. I have a LMK and LM 2, they never overheat even when I've been pushing them, especially in winter. You mentioned your friends amp "sounded" much better so was you amp bought new or s/h. Maybe check out all cables, speaker cables etc. too.
 5. Top man David had the EBS comp pedal out to me in 24 hours and all well packed. Top stuff.
 6.
Having recently upgraded to an amplifier with an in-built compressor, I have decided to sell my EBS multi-comp compressor pedal. It is in good condition and everything works perfectly. There are a couple of 'tiny' chips in the paint here and there, but these in no way affect the performance of this great compressor. I no longer have the box for it, but I will pack it up well for posting or you can collect from my home in Chatham, Kent. I am asking £75 for it, with free postage within the UK. Thanks for looking. David.
PMd about it.
 7.
We've been booked to do a 40th birthday gig in a place we never gigged at before, and the organizers came back to us asking for our PLI certificate. We don't have any, but we were planning to get all this sorted in the new year, after constituting the band as a business etc. We still need to show a PLI certificate to the event organizers asap, so we thought we would go for a one-off cover for this particular event, which the organizer will pay for. Any recommendations on insurers we can contact for this?
I believe the MU/musicians union give their members PLI as a matter of course but that may only apply to that individual member and not a whole band.
 8.
He's on at The Robin next March, can't find out much about the band though. Any one know more, is it likely to be worth driving 70 miles there and the same back? http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/music/review...h-jack-bruce.do
Drummer Frank Tontoh been around a while now, very good. Derek Nash on sax fronts a jazz "fusion" outfit called "PROTECT THE BEAT" ( which also has Winston Blisset on bass from "Massive Attack" and Darby Todd on drums from Buddy Whittington Band and Hot Leg which is Justin Hawkins band afetr the Darkness folded).
 9.
Hi i'm in the market for a set of lower tension strings to suit mostly pizz although a small amount of bowing might happen ,Clarky has recommended Innovation silver slaps but i'm not sure if they are ok for bowing, has anyone any suggestions ,many thanks in advance!
Maybe Thomastik Weichs? Although D B strings are costly to expensive, they do last a long long time.
 10.
Thats the one I have. Don't overuse it though - I usually do mine a 2/3 times a year and seems fine. If used too often it can actually cause problems (wood softening, loosen frets etc). Its not really a cleaner, more of a way of preventing rosewood boards from drying out I believe.
Yes yes, be careful with it. Once on tour, a "roadie" thought he would be clever and use it EVERY night on a guitarists strat and my bass. The strat lost its graphite nut, softened up within 3 days and the strings sank into it!! Not a happy guitar player. It got wiped into both bass and strat's bridges off the rag and covered my fingers and my strings deadened up on first night's use. Twat roadie thought it was a "cleaner" to be used every night after the show! Quite right that any OIL used is too prevent the f/board from drying out. I use "Bore Oil" from Yamaha. My double bass repairer uses it, normally used on woodwind instruments to combat spittle etc. You can clean the actual board by rubbing with finest 0000 wire wool then oil it.

 12.
I've owned three Markbass 15s and they were all a little wanting. Can't really say what the problem was (the front ported unit was also huge). I certainly got better tone from a 12" Mesa Walkabout cab. C
Maybe the 12" Markbass is better than the 15" then. thanks for the info
 13.
I use both the Traveller's and they are rather good. With one exception. The Piezo tweeter. This is obviously dependent on what kind of sound you like and if you're going for a vintage type sound then you won't need it on very much (if at all). If you go for a slap or a trebly tone, you're going to have some problems especially if you use active basses in trying to control it all. From my experience, turning up the tweeter significantly past half will just lead to it clipping and loads of mids. Just loads - so much your eyes will bleed. Turn it down to 4/10 roughly and you're wonder where all the top end cut went if you play in a loud band with a hard hitting drummer. I've been toying with flogging both my Markbass cabs for this very reason and replacing them with a Barefaced, or replacing the tweeters. On the other hand, I have no idea if the latter is even possible. The 151P most certainly isn't boomy, but it does have the characteristic (but slight) 250Hz hump that most Markbass cabs I've tried seem to have. Depends how flat you want the response really. Naturally, these are my issues and you may have something else in mind.
ta for the info on these.
 14. Anyone using this cab and what do you think? I've been using 10" cabs for years but thought of getting this 15" to link with a 2x10. Interested to see if it isn't too boomy. I had the big 15" cab a few years back, great for big stages but a bit too big a sound over the 2x10 on top as I was doing 100/120 capacity places at the time.

Now I see this thread about "It was a double post". Can you explain where I may have gone wrong with posting. I do know that when I go to upload a pic, the "upload" tab shows no sign of engaging but eventually ( after several hits on the tab) it does download a pic.

 21. Crikey chaps, all SOLD many thanks. Sorting postage as we speak. I may have to let you know on monday when the post office opens. Having decided many years ago to build my own basses, I went through a series of designs and trials costing a fair bit of money in wasted woods and parts. I''ve found three bass bodies origianlly of FOUR string design and goodness knows how old they are, well seasoned! Not for Fender style necks. They were being designed more for double octave necks and 12th fret / top horn end area for balance. The Walnut body did have a fretted neck on it, now missing, believed damaged badly in action! They all have "brass eyelet" neck bolt recesses. These could be altered to take a 5 string, humbucker pickups, sanded back and sprayed etc. These single pieces of wood now sell uncut for about £40 1st .. UK Rippled Ash single piece body .. with missing front control cavity cover. I think the neck pickup slot is slightly out of alignment, maybe by 1mm. 2nd .. UK Rippled Figured Ash single piece body. .. with tape holding on back cover plate. Looks like a recess routed on top to allow string loading into the bridge, likely to have been a Schaller 3D. 3rd .. Walnut front with maple back bass and a bit of glue line showing. plastic control cover, this bass did sound good with a fretted neck and a pair of SDs How about £10 each, maybe soemone would want all 3 of them for a deal? Postage .. don't know as yet, collection even better from NE Hants or meet up around the area. More info whenever needed.

 23.
Hello peeps. I'm not a very experienced player and I'm looking for some new strings. The problem I have is the sheer volume of choice is quite overwhelming. Make, model, gauge, material = a lot of choice. Any advive on what I should put on my ibanez sr500?
Cheap to expensive, steel to nickel wound etc. It is a minefeield. Then finding the right gauge. Well, you are going to have to do a bit of spending to suss the best for you and your particular bass. Maybe you can add some more info and explain to Basschatters your amp specs, preference of music as there might be someone in Basschat with a similar bass and amplification who plays similar music to you who can help. It might be easier for you to cross reference then. On my ash body fretless bass and Fender Roscoe Beck fretted I use Galli Nickel wound ( they call them "Rock Stars"!) and they last a real decent time. If your bass has a denser wood, Bubinga or Wenge for instance, maybe a through neck construction, this wood has a lot of mid range "support" to the sound so you may find another string would suit better. \

Victor C Knight up in north London seem to do a pretty good rate for music equipment. (Hope I haven't repeated anything here).
