I have a Markbass 2x10 sitting in the garage for sale. Haven't used it for quite a while. I put it out for £330 recently but if anyone on Basschat makes a decent offer they can collect (or arrange courier). It is the older style with 'black face' and twin front ports. It is a very loud cab, lightweight with plenty of bottom end for its size. The cab is in good condition, no fabric tears or dents in the front grill. 400watt/8ohm cab. It became redundant when I bought a 15' Traveller with a 2x10 traveller. Based on the A3 NE Hampshire areas. On Saturday 10th Sept I'll be driving from Hants/ Surrey to Corby /A1M for a gig if anyone on route is intere.sted
BUMP

what do you do when your guitarist breaks a string mid set?
mybass replied to skidder652003's topic in Gigs
So there we were, in the middle of "just got paid" / "American woman" by ZZ Top/ The guess Who - in the pub tonight when the guitarist busts a string, goes out of tune and stops playing. What would you guys do in that situatiion? Me and the drummer improvised into a dodgy jazz funk thing for a couple of minutes whilst said guitarist fumbles for new strings, restrings and retunes. We discussed it after the gig, and as its happened before and likely to happen again we think we should have a standby "question and answer" thing going on between myself and the drummer to cover the guitarists ass. Its really panicky when it happens in a room full of punters! Any ideas, experiences? Dont suggest he gets a standby axe cos he hasnt got a pot to piss in
DRUM SOLO!!!!! -
Hi, Ive changed the neck (electrics, paint work, pickups, etc etc) on an old jedson to make it something else entirely.(photos going up on build thread soon) I played it last night for a few hours and have a real prob with longer term playing. The neck ive used is a short scale from an epiphone eb0. Its lovely to play BUT ive retained the large elephant ear tuning pegs and they weigh a ton. Look lovely, but weigh a ton. This is obviously resulting in neck dive which the old epiphone EB0 also suffered from. So other than replacing the tuning pegs for a lighter set (which i dont want to do based on purely on looks!) what else can i do? I was contemplating couter balancing the bass by adding some sort of weights to the other end of the bass which may increase the weight of the bass but ultimately make it more playable? Any advice about doing that and best way to achieve a nicer balance to save my fretting hand from substantial cramp?
The top 'horn' of your bass comes to the 15th fret area. Fender 'style' basses come to the 12th fret area. This helps maintain balance of the instrument and for many players is a little easier to play the bass down the low end (F F* G) than modern balanced basses where the top horn only reaches to the 15th fret area. Have you tried the old acoustic folk strap idea that goes from the bridge end strap button and ties onto the headstock (or even move the strap button to the back of the headstock if this balance works). I seem to remember some years ago a company, probably American, bringing out an 'extension' top horn that was fixed somehow to the (back of) the bass and extended to the 12th fret area.
arco 5 string (e to high c) bass for sale supplied and made by luthier Toby Chennell and owned/played by me since last year bass has proved very helpful in making the transition from bass guitar to double bass as the Arco scale length is the same as bass guitar scale length but the sound is probably as close as you are going to get to a DB without playing a "full sized" instrument - plus the arco can be bowed just like a full sized version. The reduced body size also helps transport issues. I have gigged the Arco for swing band work and concert band work - I have fitted a fishman full circle pickup and the amplified sound retains the acoustic nature of the unamplified instrument. please see Toby's website (enter Toby Chennell into search engine)for full details of these basses and sound samples bass has soft cover and will include fishman pickup or reduce price by £200 if you do not want this pickup. looking for £1200 with pickup or £1000 without pickup towards my next double bass ! prefer collection - but happy to travel reasonable distance to facilitate same.
Could help if we knew where you were...nice instrument, I've never seen these before.
Looking to move this on it's a Squier JV P bass from around 1984, it plays and sounds great and appears original with the exception of the control knobs/extra pot, a couple of replaced screws and a Seymour Duncan Basslines Jazz pickup at the bridge. The neck is lovely with a nice amber vintage patina to the laquer. There are dings and scuffs but nothing nasty, the electrics are fine and there is play on the trussrod. The neckplate is stamped with the JV serial. It has a lovely tobacco sunburst and off white scratchplate, no case included. JV prices are going crazy for totally original basses so I guess with the extra pickup this isn't a collector's piece but a proper player's bass, 520 anyone?
The full pic of the bass is 'wobbly' so can you tell us about the bridge please? Looks like a quick string release type.
Ive got a Peavey Mk 8 head on two 210 TX cabs, both of the cabs instantly stopped working recently during a practice and the sound now being emitted is clear but extremely quiet. I know the head is still fine and its the cabs that are the issue due to the head having a full service earlier on today. What will the problem usually be in this situation and is it going to be worth fixing them? Cheers
Some amps also have fuses inside the casing, that is, not accessible unless the amp is unscrewed and slid out of its case. The fuses simply look like clear glass fragile mini tubes with fuse wire visible inside and I think they are quick blow ones as in, sudden voltage peaks and they will blow to protect the rest of the unit. These can blow! IF you decide to investigate, make sure the amp has been switched off for 24 hours and remember the circuit can hold a surpise charge for quite some time. I've experienced it! Also, the tweeter units/crossovers can also 'blow' but it would be unusal for both to go together.
Hello. At the moment, i am making an explorer type bass, and i was originally planning to paint it a colour, but after seeing it taking shape, im deciding to clearcoat it. Question is, the woods used are yellow pine and sapele, and i was wondering what can i use to bring out the grain. And heres a picture of it unfinished to help you answer.
I use "Tru oil". Basically gunstock oil and purchased from gun shops. (There is a grain 'filler' coat available pre the main coats). Its only about £5 a bottle so maybe try some on the offcuts first.
Does anyone have any experience with these basses or even just tried one? I'd be interested to hear opinions on both the rockbass version and the more expensive one. Thanks!
I tried one a few years back (in Italy). If my memory is working well, it was a larger to handle body than it had looked in any photo I had previously seen, well made but I wasn't completely taken on the acoustic sound. However that is one of the main 'problems' when trying out acoustic basses unplugged. I've played an old Washburn fretless AB20 for 15 years so I am more comfortable with this bass anyway.
Hello, I'm just in the middle of converting an old p bass into a PJ bass. Has anyone ever route out the hole for the pickup before. My dad is the one with the tool and know how for using the router but is a bit worried that the hole isnt going to look tidy. Has anyone got any tips for doing this? Thanks Gary
If it is a colour spray/varnish finish, go carefully with a router initially, you may chip the finish. For the corners you will likely need a 3/8" router cutter (1/2" deep blade) with a bearing upper guide, ie, the bearing above the cutter as it plunges to follow the template. A 1/4" router machine will take the 3/8" router cutter bit and they cost about £25 from Trend. Now I guess the chisel seems more cost effective!
Help - I've had this little can of fingerboard oil for years and years, it's the best thing ever for conditioning fretboards, marvellous stuff, but it's run out and I can't find anywhere that sells it. Its a mix of linseed oil and lemon grass, not that naptha spirit stuff with lemon perfume added to it. I rub it in to fretboards, let it soak then buff off any excess, brings out a marvellos rich shine and smooth finish, dries hard and protects the wood. Company on the back says Logic International, Gwent but I can't find anything on the internet. Anyone know of this product? Whaere I can get some more? Suitable alternative to do the same job? Thanks!
"Bore oil" made by Yamaha for woodwind. Used it for years, re-coat yearly.
Cheers Watchman, Since I posted that we've used it for a small pub gig, hooked up to a couple of 8ohm Yamaha cabs. There are no markings on it regarding speaker impedance, but it seems to have survived with no apparent damage done, and it was plenty loud enough for what we want it for - basically just a couple of vocal mics, possibly one on the kick-drum. As you suggest, I think I'll ignore the slave outputs. If it gets to the stage where I need to consider them, it'll be time to look at a bigger/better PA anyhow. I was curious as much as anything. I was though, like you, rather surprised at the lack of info out there... Thanks for your thoughts.
I would think you are safe running 2 of 8ohm cabs with this unit = 4ohm load to the amp both able to handle at least 150 watts each.
Rising costs of Neodymium – concerns on Talkbass I realise most internet discussions on forums as large as Talkbass can become out of hand and are often blown out of proportion. It happens on all forums I guess! The main reason for this topic is the concerns that have been raised regarding neodymium prices and availability. It seems from my limited knowledge that neo is obtained from China who have recently actioned the prices and what appears to be a limit on the export amounts. As we all know, the neo-speaker market has become pretty damn large, with many manufacturers choosing neo speakers for their cabinet designs. Even pickups are incorporating neo, like the EBMM Big Al and some (?) Dingwall basses, (I presume there are a lot more). This is not a topic on the pros and cons, because we have been there before. We can all like what we like, lets face it. Where does this leave the consumer? Are we going to be hit with EVEN MORE price rises?! I personally think some neo cabs ARE over-priced, but then again so are many ceramic loaded cabinets. Lets face it, I think hiking the prices even more is going to leave the manufacturers with a problem. Will we, the consumer, pay the upcharge?! Lets not forget, if they are imported from say, America, to the UK, we are effectively going to have another price rise on top of what the neo price rise is, purely because of the fact its imported, (and no doubt some manufacturers may choose to take the mick and increase the prices disproportionately). Talkbass have quotes from Jim Bergantino and snippets off the Avatar website discussing the rise in prices. I think its clear that there is a state of limbo….as in they aren’t sure exactly what will happen next. It’s a shame Bergantino discontinued the HT/EX ER series and HS series. Perhaps he won’t in light of this? What do we think will happen next? We will just continue to buy and pay the rather silly price rises, or will the manufacturers sense this will cause problems and design more ceramic loaded cabinets again?! In my humble opinion, manufacturers who solely produce neo loaded cabinets are going to suffer quite badly with either a loss of sales or indeed loss of whole lines until things are rectified. I know as bass players, we are quite proud of our new technology, but when I try to explain to people that a 1x12 can cost upto £600 (before the price hike) they are literally flabbergasted! Who knows what is going to happen. I am still searching for ‘that’ neo cabinet that has the right spec, right size, and a weight that’s actually worthwhile spending the money on. Obviously being how I am, Id like it to sound as close to what I class as smooth with none of the neo ‘bite’ in the high mids that winds me up a little. Aguilar seem to have taken this idea with the SL112s, but we shall see, so its obvious they can make neo and ceramic sound almost the same. I have my eye on the Genz Benz Neo X212T in the new vinyl/tolex finish they have released…that seems to tick all the boxes so far (eg light, great size, 4 ohm, 2x12, well renowned, and a fair price).
Interesting post. I wonder if manufacturers did produce the non neo cabs that these cabs would these days be cheaper?
I've joined an acoustic band and at the moment I am playing my Fender Precision. To fit in with the image of also playing an acoustic looking instrument and maybe to do something different, I kind of fancy getting an acoustic bass, probably a Washburn AB10. I'll still play through an amp though. Anyone do this and have any thought of playing acoustic bass especially live? Does it work or just a gimmick and better to stick with an electric bass? Plus, does anyone tried flats on their acoustic bass and does it work and sound ok?
Played on a fretless Washburn AB 20......... Martin make a good 'bronze' acoustic bass string. Think I also had Guild acoustic bass strings a while back. Try getting acoustics strings as the usual electric bass strings don't seem to have the sound for acoustic bass.
As the above, re Maple Necks. Am sure this has been covered before, but I have three US Fender Precisions, and my maple-necked bass is far "toppier" than the other two, and seems to have less bottom end as a result. All three are standard spec, no different pickups/bridges/strings etc. Has anyone else found this? Quick edit - I mean maple neck with maple fretboard, as oppose to maple neck with rosewood fretboard.
Body wood plays a significant part too so are all three basses made of the same wood family usually used on P basses....ash (swamp), alder, basswood / lime.
Pete gets amazing sounds using these - from full on traditional fretless tones to sounds where, if you couldn't see it was fretless you wouldn't know - having said that, he is a very, very fine player! Hope you're well Pete! I've just swithced from Status halfwounds to Rotosound Pressurewounds for similar reasons to the OP and am very happy with them. Mike
Thanks Mike..just caught up with this thread...hope you are well too.... I have a set of Galli on the fretless that are probably up to 25/30 gigs now and still sounding pretty good to my ears, with the help of Markbass gear.
Ian Morton from SMART hand delivered my new Eminence RN4 today (which was above and beyond the call of duty on a Saturday; great service!) First impressions are that its beautifully made, feels very double bass-like and is very simple to assemble/disassemble for travelling (though I will only take the neck off if we do gigs involving trains or flights). Comes with a good gigbag and a rocksolid, hard plastic golf bag container for flying. The Helicore strings were a bit taut for my liking (as other BCers have told me) and I have swapped them over for Innovation Honeys which are lower tension and have made it a dream to play. Not been able to play it amplified yet as I only got the strings sorted about 10.20pm this evening, that awaits me tomorrow. This is a lovely instrument with as much DB vibe as its possible to get for an EUB, very well-designed and very user-friendly.
I'm fairly certain I saw one used a couple of years ago with Robert Cray in concert (Basingstoke) and having only read about them the day before, I was pretty impressed with it, though of course the sound up in the 'gods' seating wasn't as 'tight' on bass as we all want to hear.
I know the subject of strings for a fretless has been done to death, but nevertheless.... I have a Tunebass Fretless which I bought off fellow basschater Walplayer just over a year ago. It's has piezo pickups only, and an absolutely fantastic tone - really fat and dynamic. I love it. I've tried various strings on it - I started of with some rotosound solo bass, which I had on my previous fretless, but decided they didn't feel as good as the set that was on it when I got it - too sticky somehow. I then moved to some d'addario half rounds (I think these may have been what it came with), which give the best sound that I've had out of the bass so far. I'm currently using a hybrid set that i've made up from 2 stock sets (40-60-80-100, which is my preferred gauge). However, I do find that for certain songs, they are a bit stiff on the stiff side and are lacking a little in bite and sustain. I've tried status half rounds, which felt good to play and had a bit more snap, but lacked the quality bottom end that the d'addarios give me. I also tried some d'addario nickel roundwounds, but they were far too buzzy, inspite of me taking the action up shedloads. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I spend more money. I know Elite do some groundwounds, but can't find very much information about them. I don't want to loose the quality fatness that I'm currently getting with the d'addario half rounds , but need something slightly more flexible with a touch more sustain, although not as bright and buzzy as a round wound..... I know, I'm a fussy bugger. Any ideas???
I'm using 'GALLI' nickels on my fretless bass, called "Rockstar" series.
Well, due to multiple people recomending it, i've got myself a copy of simandl part I. However, I can't see how bowing seemingly random notes is meant to help. Due to the exercises being so disjointed, and not even in costant key, i'm having difficulty telling whether my notes are in tune or not, so I can't really see how it's meant to help. Of course this may partly be due to having a slightly untrained ear, but I would've expected a book for beginners to be done in such a way to help that. Does anyone have any advice? not sure if i'm just missing something here, and at the moment it currently just feels like an unproductive chore.
Best to start work on these with a teacher present. As you say you have difficulty telling whether you are in tune, then you are still really feeling your way around the instrument. A decent teacher will put a lot of these seemingly random exercises into focus for you.
I am selling the star Kornephoros, based in the Andromeda Galaxy, which I bought a couple of years ago. I purchased this as an investment, but the recession has affected the market value of stars considerably. (Along with the price of guitar knobs, which have doubled recently.) I paid fifty quid for it. I'm open to offers or trades. Anything considered.
I'm afraid to tell you, well I'm not actually afraid, but this is a 'fading star' and as such the price is well over what it should be. I can offer £16.78 fuel to be included and a partially eaten galaxy bar. Please repond quickly as I also have eyes on something in Ursula Minor.
