I know the subject of strings for a fretless has been done to death, but nevertheless.... I have a Tunebass Fretless which I bought off fellow basschater Walplayer just over a year ago. It's has piezo pickups only, and an absolutely fantastic tone - really fat and dynamic. I love it. I've tried various strings on it - I started of with some rotosound solo bass, which I had on my previous fretless, but decided they didn't feel as good as the set that was on it when I got it - too sticky somehow. I then moved to some d'addario half rounds (I think these may have been what it came with), which give the best sound that I've had out of the bass so far. I'm currently using a hybrid set that i've made up from 2 stock sets (40-60-80-100, which is my preferred gauge). However, I do find that for certain songs, they are a bit stiff on the stiff side and are lacking a little in bite and sustain. I've tried status half rounds, which felt good to play and had a bit more snap, but lacked the quality bottom end that the d'addarios give me. I also tried some d'addario nickel roundwounds, but they were far too buzzy, inspite of me taking the action up shedloads. Does anyone have any other suggestions before I spend more money. I know Elite do some groundwounds, but can't find very much information about them. I don't want to loose the quality fatness that I'm currently getting with the d'addario half rounds , but need something slightly more flexible with a touch more sustain, although not as bright and buzzy as a round wound..... I know, I'm a fussy bugger. Any ideas???
I'm using 'GALLI' nickels on my fretless bass, called "Rockstar" series.
Well, due to multiple people recomending it, i've got myself a copy of simandl part I. However, I can't see how bowing seemingly random notes is meant to help. Due to the exercises being so disjointed, and not even in costant key, i'm having difficulty telling whether my notes are in tune or not, so I can't really see how it's meant to help. Of course this may partly be due to having a slightly untrained ear, but I would've expected a book for beginners to be done in such a way to help that. Does anyone have any advice? not sure if i'm just missing something here, and at the moment it currently just feels like an unproductive chore.
Best to start work on these with a teacher present. As you say you have difficulty telling whether you are in tune, then you are still really feeling your way around the instrument. A decent teacher will put a lot of these seemingly random exercises into focus for you.
I am selling the star Kornephoros, based in the Andromeda Galaxy, which I bought a couple of years ago. I purchased this as an investment, but the recession has affected the market value of stars considerably. (Along with the price of guitar knobs, which have doubled recently.) I paid fifty quid for it. I'm open to offers or trades. Anything considered.
I'm afraid to tell you, well I'm not actually afraid, but this is a 'fading star' and as such the price is well over what it should be. I can offer £16.78 fuel to be included and a partially eaten galaxy bar. Please repond quickly as I also have eyes on something in Ursula Minor.
I'm not in any shape or strength condition for DB yet it would seem ... On Tuesday after a 5-10 mins DB practice I got a slight sharp pain and then saw I'd managed to develop a bump on top of my left wrist that (after extensive googling) appears likely to be fluid buildup following tendon strain. I managed EB for 3 hours the next day (regular band practice) and a bit of turn on the mandolin at an acoustic night without much bother at all, but am thinking I should give the DB a rest for a day or two? Has anyone got any tips for getting into condition here? I might have been keeping my elbow out to the side quite a bit (arm horizontal and parallel to floor) - way more than Rufus Reid does (just got his DB DVD and book, his arm is vertical and parallel to neck more or less - i.e. the forearm is a normal vector to the fretboard) - I'm now thinking that keeping the elbow closer to my side and wrist straight like Rufus would mean my arm weight is more naturally pulling down on the strings and I can grip less? I know this sort of thing is best dealt with in person by teachers but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts before my next visit.... Cheers T
Go with Rufus.
A mate is popping round tonight with a minidisc recorder for me to have a play with. I think it's something like THIS. Anyone used one of these to either record your "pure" signal, or a mixed signal? Are there any tips/tricks worth knowing?
Can be useful to chop and change a song's arrangment around to try different arrangements but, that needs a bit of practise. Okay for recording live music but the compression can be harsh. Handy all the same.
Can anyone in the know tell me the basic difference that I might find with these two models (yes I know it basically relates to frequency range).....anything else? http://www.krksys.com/krk-headphones.php Also any other suggestions? Cheers Si
I bought a set of Sennheiser HD 600, more expensive than these KRKs, a couple of guys told me they have mixed tracks using them and I do like them. Open backed though which puts some people off them. The KRKs look a good deal.
Out of interest, do you have any sound clips of the bass? I'm sure that would help some people
I could maybe look into that...I've usually sold the basses on the facy that a bassist has caught me playing a show on my bass often enough to figure they want one themselves.

Is there a problem bunging a big set of casters on a cab?
mybass replied to Ancient Mariner's topic in Amps and Cabs
Just thinking about moving stuff around over smoothish carpeted floors. Putting casters on a cab should decouple it from the floor, right, so is there a reason NOT to do this? Thanks.
And sometimes not having the cab sitting flat on the floor does help eliminate some boom. Years ago 'we' used to put bass cabs on beer crates to stop stage boom resonance. -

Currently strung with "Galli" nickel strings of 105/85/65/45 gauge. HISTORY: I've sold few basses over the years, usually to order. This one (of 3) was made for a friends' shop that was branching into guitar sales. After some success in the lower end market he asked about custom basses. However, 18 months ago after I had started the bass, the shop's business took a bit of a dive so no possibility of selling them there. I am a pro bass player and play fretless bass 99% of the time which due to the lack of decent fretless instruments in the past, is how I started building fretless basses. I was introduced to bass design/building some years ago by way of a conversation with Melvin Hiscox. Melvin is a builder/repairer and has written a book on the subject of guitar building. I have since used my fretless basses for 15 years now for concert touring/gigs/recording and I also occasionally build to order for other players. They usually sell at £1150-£1250 depending on hardware/pickup specs. The bass is set up and played in a little at home and re-setup before handing over. This bass has been set up for over a year now. As the bass is UNLINED, side dots denote where the frets would normally lie. I have previously cleared with Basschat moderators on selling "new" basses and I do donate from any proceeds. The instrument can be seen in NE Hants/Bordon/Farnham/Hindhead area.
BUMP
