1. Ah, I've just seen that I'm back in the country when their tour is on and I've a day off in Glasgow when they're there so I'll do my best to pop in.
2. Alas, I won't be going this year, first time in 8 years I've missed out.
3. I'm glad this topic came up, I was thinking this just yesterday. I use the iReal on my laptop & iPad a lot, it's great but I was looking for something else too. I'll keep an eye on this thread, thanks, and I'll check out the band in a box too.
4.
Ah yes, I remember that
Ha! How is it?! I also remember purchasing a deep impact and meeting someone at High Street Kensington tube station. I was waiting by the barrier and the person turned up, said "are you the one I'm meeting"?, I said "err...yes" he gave me the pedal, shook my hand and said "enjoy" and then left.
5. Starbucks on the M23 to sell a jazz bass and Paddington station concourse to sell an amp rack. I've also sold items on here and coincidentally the person who's contacted me has been a friend of mine. Neither of us realised until i called the number he'd put into a PM to me enquiring about the sale and his named popped up on my phone as it was obviously stored in the contacts.
6.
I understand they are touring Porno later this year
Yup, you're right. I've been waiting 6 years for them to come back and sadly I'll be out on tour myself when they do the UK. Gutted!
7. I think I MAY have the bass score for it somewhere (I'm a massive extreme fan). If you still want the dots for it, let me know, Cheers.
8. Funnily enough a very close friend of mine is on tour with Jake Bugg at the moment. He barely has a musical bone in his body but he said to me that the band really is quite good and totally blew him away.
9. Hi all, I've been re-visiting a few things I've learned over the years and I've become a little unstuck over a couple of things with Figured Bass. I seem to have contradicting notes with regards to doubling up of notes from 3 note chords to 4 note chords. From what I've been able to de-cipher from my mish-mash of my notes, these are the rules (as far as I can see). Would anyone agree with this? 5/3 - Double the root (or sometimes the 5th) 6/5 - Double ANY note 4/3 - Double the 5th 6/3 - Double ANY note 6/3 - If the interval between 6 & 3 is: PERFECT 4th - Double any note EXCEPT the bass AUG 4th - Double the BASS 6/4 - ALWAYS double the bass note DOUBLE THE ROOT FOR: Any 5/3 chord Any 6/3 chord except for Diminished chords (ii or vii) NEVER in 6/4 DOUBLE THE THIRD FOR: Any 6/3 chord (except if it's the leading note) NEVER in 6/4 chords NEVER in a 5/3 unless: it's minor OR Maj 3rd in a minor key & part of a V - VI progression DOUBLE THE FIFTH FOR Any 5/3 Any 6/3 except for Diminished chords (ii or vii) ALWAYS 6/4 Another list of rules I've found in my notes include: Root position – 1 or 5
First Inversion – anything goes
Second inversion – 5
Watch out for: • • diminished chords (ii° and vii°) – ONLY double the third • • chord VI in minor keys CAN double the third • • Vb – CAN’T double the third As you can see, it's a bit all over the place and I'm wondering whether all of the above facts are true, or whether a couple are incorrect or whether I'm missing anything. Thank you for any help or pointers. Cheers, Mark
10.
You can do the same thing with Transcribe! from www.seventhstring.com. I use this pretty much every day, and it's invaluable. When I was a kid I discovered that if you played music back through a double tape deck on high speed dubbing (so copying to another cassette), the bass 'popped' out of the mix, an octave higher. I realised that this was an excellent way to pick out difficult to hear lines, and found that it works particularly well for low 5-string parts. This can be replicated in Transcribe! by transposing the piece up one octave, making the bass pop out of the mix. You can further enhance the bass using the preset EQ filters and adjust to your liking using the graphic. Anyway, it seems that this app does the same thing, which is certainly very useful. It's a little bit cheaper as well. Good find! Stuart
Same here! I annoyed the hell out of my pare to by playing tapes at the faster speed to learn basslines, and seventh string's transcribe is the single best piece of software I've bought. I'll check out this isolation software too though to see if it tickles my fancy. Cheers
11. I'd love to play in the chili peppers or zeppelin but I'd probably be so intimidated by playing with my idols I'd fluff even the simplest basslines. After them it's got to be Reef, that's a bass gig I'd love to get - having seen them live 19 times I'd like to think I could fit in with their live show.
12.
Congratulations, and welcome to the world of No Sleep.
Thanks!! The boy is ten months old and got his first guitar Christmas - Vtech don't do basses. Thanks to work I've been away for more of his life than I've been home, which is really hard but it means I get big chunks of time at home between tours though. All I think of is "the cats in the cradle......" Mark King has promised me he'll give the boy his first bass.
13. IN Nothing OUT Nothing (except the sale of a bunch of music books on here). The major "in" in my world this year was the arrival of our first son, so that pretty much ruled out anything being bought, worth it though.
14. I appreciate threads like this, even though I read as much as I can about amps, power, impedance and figures etc i still come across a fact or twist in the technical theory that I don't understand. I love the fact there is a wealth of knowledge out there from Basschatters who are willing to help out. Cheers.
15. There was a chap on radio 2's pop master quiz this week who played triangle on "proper crimbo" - apparently he was told he wasn't very good at it though.
16.
He says that this rate is for a few days only. Then it will go to full price. Get in quick. I joined up as I have probably had £36 worth of stuff that he distributes freely. I'm looking forward to it.
Ok, cheers!
17. Thanks for the heads up, someone had mentioned it on Facebook and I was wondering how the site was. I'll have a proper look when I get home this weekend.
18. That's a shame, I'd have come along as I'm local, in Ipswich. Sadly I'm working in London all of this week. Have a good one though!
19. Yolanda Charles has today written a very interesting post on her wall on Facebook about people / pretty / girls playing along to covers on YouTube and has opened up a rather interesting debate on the subject. I'm sure it's a coincidence an unrelated to this thread but it makes interesting reading. I would copy and paste the post here but although its on a social network site I'm not sure if its up to me for me to distribute the comments elsewhere.
20. We had a new p-bass copy and a Marshall 25 watt amp bought for the school music department just as I started my music gcse. It was no means a coincidence that I was literally the only music gcse pupil my school had, I got on with the music teacher really well and I wanted to learn to play the guitar. He said "would a bass do?" as he couldn't justify buying an electric guitar, so I said yes and became a bass player. It was perfect to learn on and I think it was a tanglewood if I remember correctly. I also mentioned my mate wanted to play the drums, a 5 piece kit arrived the next week!
21. I did a couple of gigs depping in a band which had an electric kit. The first gig was in a pub and there were no monitors, except for one which had just the drums in, pointing at the drummer, away from me so the only way i could hear him was to lean over him and pretty much tilt my head on his shoulder. I mentioned it to him for the next gig and he put the monitor on his other side, pointing at me. This meant all I could hear was him.... The sound was ok, but it's enough to not quite put me off but it means I'll need more convincing..
22. I have had the bass riff of wake up by RATM and also summers in bloom by reef and also cannonball by the breeders but you could barely hear it. It's now the bulls on parade riff by RATM or the guitar solo of wake up by RATM depending on who's calling. Text message alert is the last chord of "more than words" by extreme. I keep meaning to do a snippet of the first 6 notes of rebel rebel by Bowie as a tone too, but haven't gotten around to it yet. When the wife calls it's the synth bubbly intro to fireflies by owl city as that came on the radio as I drove to our wedding.
23. No brainer, Elacin ER-15's and / or ER-25's. I've got both and have had to replace two lots that have been lost / in a stolen bag without even battering an eyelid. I work in a live music environments virtually every day and I can't stress how important they are to me. I keep a pair on my belt at all times when at work ready for use at any time. As for using them when I'm playing, it depends on the gig / rehearsal / band as to whether it's the 15's or 25's. My advice is put your hand in your pocket and get some, now.
