1.
There was a thread about this song a while back. I have a superb tab / transcription if you need it. http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
Well remembered! I gave Hobbayne the note-for-note copy I have - another satisfied customer!
 2. Cool, glad you had a good night! I'm dropping by at the Glasgow show - looking forward to it.
 3.
It will mellow the sound out massively, take the clank and over the top treble out, probably find it will add a lot of low end too
OK, great, thanks. I'll give it a go. Cheers
 4.
Try some flatwound strings on it
I'm a bit naive when it comes to different types of strings, what would Flatwound do to the sound? Currently I've got Ernie ball super slinkys on it.
 5.
how about a Hohner b2? or a steinberger, they should have a far more authentic sound and the pickups are a standard size so you can modify it to fine tune the sound to your liking (although from what i've read of the Hohner they actually sound very nice as standard). Matt
I ALMOST bought a steinberger in Australia a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn't cheap and who knows how much trouble I'd have been when I'd get home with it! Thanks for the heads up about the Hohner, I'm now looking into it. Cheers.
 6.
on a serious note - if you have a laptop/ipad type thingy with you why not use the spare time away to do some theory learning stuff - plenty of apps and vids and tutorials online http://www.notreble.com/apps/
As an aside from the thread but in reply to Steve's post, I'm currently using http://www.mymusictheory.com/ to further my current musical education. Coupled with the literally dozens of breeze-block sized reference books it's a tremendous course and I can't recommend her services enough. It's well worth checking out if you want to progress any further with your theory knowledge (and no, I don't personally know her, I'm just very impressed with her work & teaching).
 7.
You could always consider one of these.. https://www.youtube....h?v=-yfKsRzLHqY
Hmm, interesting, I think I saw something similar at the Bass Guitar show a couple of years ago and I wasn't overwhelmed - but then again it was hard to hear / do anything with the amount of noise going on. However - It's different - I fear change!!! I'll see if I can find one in a shop somewhere. My tour is back in the UK this week so I'll hunt around a few of the popular haunts and chase one up to try it out.
 8. I'm learning the piano outro part at the moment, the chord spacings are huge! I didn't think I had small hands but it's quite a stretch. I don't think I've got the bass tab, but I'll have a look anyway.
 9. I'm quite sure I've got an accurate transcription of it. I'll dig it out if you're interested.
 10.
seems like a totally pointless and tedious to use contraption... If you're not away from a bass for months, you won't lose dexterity. If you are away from a bass for months... get a new bass!
I'll show that comment to the boss / wife and see how I get on convincing that this is a valid point and I'm now obliged to buy another one! The outlook is bleak..
 11.
Think you must have something in the chain that's trying to emulate the sound of a ric...
Maybe that's it... I'll get rid of it sharpish..
 12. Hello! Currently my hotel "touring" setup consists of an Aria Sinsonido bass going through a Line 6 Tone Port into their Gear Box software on my MacBook Pro. Whilst this has served me for many years as an acceptable rig and means I can practice to my heart's content whilst away from home I can't help but notice that it really does sound AWFUL! It essentially sounds something similar to a metal dustbin full of spanners rolling down a hill. It's probably a lot to do with the fact that the bass only has a piezo pickup in the bridge and not a conventional body mounted one. I'm wondering what the best option to improve it is. is it worth butchering the body of the bass and installing a pickup? Would some other interface & software improve it? I imagine that you can't really polish a turd if the bass sounds terrible in the first place (it's not great through an amp) but the bass is just the right size as once the arms come off it, it packs down into a bag which my 49 key Alesis keyboard can fit into too. The most important thing about the size of the bag containing my bass & keyboard is that it fits perfectly in the door of my touring toolbox and also in the shelf above the bunks on a tour bus so unless there are any other basses out there on the market that I don't know about which are of a similar size (body width is the important thing) and with a normal pickup I'm not sure what the best thing to do is. I'm basically just after a nice smooth bass sound which isn't so harsh it makes my ears bleed and won't turn into a muddy blend of nothingness if you try to compensate with (software) EQ. I'm keen to keep the equipment list & size to a minimum as this rig does go around the world with me and needs to be setup easily and quickly in hotel rooms etc.. Thank you for any help or advice.
 13.
No, no..! I was kidding..! The Fender long-scale version is the Precision. Sorry. It's seldom that anyone even reads my posts, still less believes them..!
Ha! Well, I'm the gullible one who fell for it - I'm a bit slow on the uptake today...
 14.
on a serious note - if you have a laptop/ipad type thingy with you why not use the spare time away to do some theory learning stuff - plenty of apps and vids and tutorials online http://www.notreble.com/apps/
I'm already doing that - I'm about to do the ABRSM Grade 6 theory as soon as I'm back in the UK long enough to enter the exam(!).
 15. Ok, cool. The consensus seems to be "a bit crap". Thanks, it's always nice to have another opinion. I'll look into the fender one too, or is that just as pointless?
 16.
looks about as useful as tits on a kipper
Ha ha! Nice, I'm going to use that phrase in future!
 17. I saw one of these advertised online: http://www.thepocketpicker.com/index.html Has anyone got any experience of these / any thoughts? I do a lot of travelling with work, it's not always possible to take a bass and I was wondering if this was potentially and good. Cheers
 18. I've dropped that guitar! (Red Special) I caught it though (phew) apparently the strap often falls off with Pete adding "ah, yeah, it does that" after he caught the look of horror on my face!
 19. Ah, This takes me back to my sixth form days! Someone had "the plot thickens" on the stereo in the minibus on a biology field trip to Wales, we listened it to death - it was the first acid jazz I listened to and that got me into a bunch of other bands too.
 20. Listen to the stage manager, do what he says and you'll be fine - The Henry Rollins quote applies here. The rest of it is simply just another gig which you need to set up and pack away quickly for.
 21. A great, great song. I remember spending the Winter months of my 3rd year of Uni learning and memorising it note-for-note after the bass solo / break down bit appeared in Bass player magazine. I'm a bit rusty on it now and I've got about 3 different versions of the transcription from various led zep / rock / bass books but now you've posted this I'll give it a good going over again. Enjoy playing it, it's in my top 5 "bass" songs of all time. "Squeeze me baby, till the juice runs down my leg. The way you squeeze my lemon, I'm gonna fall right out of bed"!
 22.
Nothing special but I will never forget. I was late into music, had my first public gig aged 50 in 2008. I opened the set playing the first notes of 'Gimmie Some Loving' and was as nervous as anything. After about 1 minute the nerves vanished and I discovered that I *really* loved it
Great story!
 23. Another one bites the dust. I hadn't been playing very long at all and I remember taking ages to work out the C bit. I also remember freaking out some girls in my class by turning the cassette over in a 4-track recorder so it played backwards and hearing "it's fun to smoke marajuana" instead of "another one bites the dust".
 24. I've often thought this, I'm really keen to be able to pull off BV's with aplomb. I did purchase a self-tuition / exercise course from iTunes, "Voice lessons to go" by Ariella Vaccarino. It's basically a bunch of exercises starting from simple aaaahhh's right through to complicated arpeggios. Obviously it can't monitor your progress or highlight where your weaknesses are, a professional teach can't be replaced in this situation, but it's a good starting block for me. I often use it in the car but don't overdo it in case you get a bit lightheaded and dizzy (that never happened to me, honest)...
 25. My mate is the drummer from Editors, Ed Lay. His pre-Editors band used to support my band back in the day in Ipswich. It's always amusing bumping into him out on the touring / festival circuit and it tickled us both when i work for the band doing a string of festivals & shows. There is JTQ's Andrew McKinney, who I'm sure several people on here know too. Another chap who I knew from a couple of bands / groups I played in and with back in the day in Ipswich is Zac 'O Neil. Far from the jazz-funk band I played in with him, he went on to play for Extreme Noise Terror and I think he now plays for a couple of metal bands called Criminal and also Agonsyt. I've seen him for a few years though. This has made me feel old and gobsmacked at how fast time has flown.
