1.
when you listen to it, you realise where his bass was dropped in. All those monster fills where he plays agasint Peart's drum fills were all drop ins.
This makes me feel a little better considering the attention I had to give these fills in order to nail them!
2.
And bluesparky I've pm'd you
Thanks!
3.
I'm doing this as one of my exam pieces today , had to relearn it to fit round their notation. doing hit me with your rhythm stick and over the electric grapevine too. nervous?? Me?? just a little :/
How did you get on? I'm going to do love games & 6:00 too, I was worried that if I played one of my own tunes or selected another track which wasn't in the book as the third piece that it might not be up to the standard. How was the exam structure? How were the non-set piece sections of the exam?
4.
His most accessible albums are definitely Addicted and Epicloud, both quite recent, so jump in there. Ki is also great, if not typical of his usual style. Beyond that, and going back a little, Terria, Synchestra and Accelerated Evolution are awesome, Ocean Machine is sublime, and of course his body of work with Strapping Young Lad is essential if industrial-tinged angry yet melodic metal is your thing (go for City and The New Black first). And, for sheer fun, there's his "rock opera", Ziltoid The Omniscient. All of his albums have great stuff on them, just some more than others. Some of his late-90s records (Infinity, Physicist) are a little on the weird side, but contain some great tunes in amongst the strangeness (Christeen - with Ginger Wildheart, Kingdom, Bad Devil, etc). More recently, Deconstruction is a great record, very heavy and ambitious, but almost unlistenable in parts! And, much as I'm a Dev fan, I haven't really got into his latest, the Casualties Of Cool album.
Ok, great, I'll seek them out. Thank you.
5. I'll need to get some of his stuff now - he's got some great praise in the previous posts. Where should I start? What are the "go-to" albums he's done?
6. Cool, am I right in thinking he's the chap who sang on Vai's Sex & Religion? He's got an incredible voice if it is him.
7. As expected, it was an great show with some amazing playing. The other thing that was a pleasant surprise was the support act, an outfit called the Parc X Trio, they were really good too, I wish they could've played for longer! http://youtu.be/LG3hHlTo8K8
8. I'm out on tour in North America at the moment and we've just arrived in Montreal for a day off. It's just been pointed out to me it's in the middle of their jazz festival (as well as their National day) and Marcus Milller is playing this evening 1km from my hotel. I've just bought my ticket and I can't wait.
9. Dunno if someone has put this on here yet, but here we go: http://www.gigwise.com/photos/92183/haim-prove-themselves-masters-of-bass-face-at-glastonbury
10.
Works every time if one uses the 'Share this video' link, not the URL in the browser. Nice shot of your busy day; very impressive. Not for the vertiginous..!
Thanks Dad, I'll do that in future, cheers. Without wanting to sound arrogant, it's literally just another day in the office for me - I'll try and get a photo of me playing a gig from somewhere, it's been a while so it'll probably be a black and white photo scan or brass rubbing....
11.
Did you use the MEDIA and /MEDIA tags between square brackets before and after the link? That might help. Or do as Dad says. Better always do as Dad says.
Cheers Chaps!
12.
Probably the "s" in "https". Remove it, and see if it works. If not, we'll take the next step.
Hmm. Tried it, didn't work.
13. I appreciate this isn't a photo, nor can you actually really see me, nor am I playing but this surfaced on facebook today for some reason. I'm the one on the left. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OTmJqY9vNk Edit: Sorry, I don't know why it's not embedded - it usually does! Edit: removed S, as per Bass Tractor's advice!
14. I went to his session / masterclass at the Bass Merchant in Colchester in 2009 (??). Again, only about 15 - 20 people went but he played for a LOONG time with oodles of enthusiasm and energy. I've always been in admiration of his abilities and style, his solo on Steve Vai's Blue Powder first drew my attention to him but seeing how much he loves playing even to a tiny handful of people is a credit to him. He came across as a really top bloke and it was incredible to see him play with such jaw dropping techniques and also fantastic musicality. I think he was doing a showcase for Hartke, which included him showing off their wonderful new combo, and the speaker of the wonderful new combo promptly parped and farted during the time he was playing through it, much to the embarrassment of the Hartke rep who was standing a few feet away and trying to decide whether to do something about it or not. I had to get back home to London ASAP after Stu finished playing and left very sharpish. To this day I wish I'd hung around, bought a few CD's and had a chat with him. Maybe one day I'll cross his path again and have a chat. Thanks to the generosity of Stuart Clayton via this site I've got one of his books of transcriptions of a bunch of Mr Hamm's work, that'll keep me busy for the summer!
15. For me it's Forscore, it's pretty much the only reason I own an iPad. It also can have a foot controlled mouse / up down button plugged into it so you can change pages without missing a beat. Worth every penny for me and does exactly what I need it to. You can also organise and set up setlists for gigs or practice regimes etc.
16. I'm massive fan and love watching the DVD. However I can't help but feel that the crowd contained many B-list celebs and "cool" people who knew it was THE gig to be at yet couldn't name more than 5 songs at a push. I couldn't get a ticket for the gig, however I was working on the tour that loaded out of the O2 mere hours, If not minutes before the led Zep gig loaded in. A lot of the the crew on the led Zep gig are very close friends of mine and we did have a plan for me to stay in the building and grab a pass, but I had to be at manchester's MEN arena at 8am the morning after the Zep O2 gig for the next show of the tour I was working on, something I wasn't 100% confident about happening. Looking back, I wish I'd taken the risk and stayed, I'd have gotten to Manchester even it meant taking a taxi. It'd have been worth it. One of life's big regrets! (As flea says, it's better to regret something you did, than something you didn't do). I have heard their rehearsals from Elstree which is interesting - especially when it all falls apart during Kashmir and you can picture them looking at each other with raised eyebrows saying "where's the 1"?.
17. Working from the end towards the beginning is something I've never even thought of, the more I think about it the more I think I'll use it - Great idea! Normally when when I work on tricky pieces I'll break it down into sections, or natural groups of bars and work on a chunk at a time. If there are only certain parts in a piece which are too fiddly, complex or fast for me to play naturally I'll try and get the whole piece down and then chop the offending section of the song into an MP3 of just that bit, complete with a four bar run in and run out, loop this on Transcribe! so I can slow it keep at it. Increase the speed by doing this over several practice sessions whilst also making sure I can nail the rest of the piece too. This seems to work for me! (If it's a piece that I naturally don't "get" I'll listen to it to death whilst driving, on a bus etc until I'm almost sick of it).
18. I came home yesterday and they were waiting for me! Thanks once again Stuart. Cheers, Mark
19. Just for your information, the Trinity Rock And Pop Grade 8 Bass exam has YYZ on their syllabus (and it's one of the tunes I'll be using for my exam once I finish the job I'm currently on). It'd obviously be out of order for me to post a copy of it or provide a link to it, but, should you stumble across the syllabus book in a music shop there's no harm in having a look and seeing how they've transcribed it. FYI, Their transcription starts on the 8th fret of the E string, and the first run is grouped together as 13-lets (as in trip-lets!) in one bar of 4/4, the three notes after the C are quaver triplets, and the run down to the F# are all equal semi-quavers. It's a good fun track to play and I'm looking forward to the exam (once I know when I'm coming home!!). I hope this helps.
20. Love it, very good. Chili peppers are my #1 all time top group and after having met Chad & also know a few chaps in the industry who've worked with him everyone rates him as a great guy, humble, generous and has huge respect for crew who work around him Top bloke.
21. We could be on to something here (although knowing me, it's already been thought of and fallen through!!) the idea of contributing to basschat coffers sounds like a great idea.
22. Slightly off topic here, I've bought a few of these: http://www.coffeebreakgrooves.com/ I find them great for general practice and also for preparing for an exam (e.g. RGT or Trinity Rock 'n Pop etc). They're not cheap and I'm sure it's not TOO hard to for one to produce something of a similar ilk, but I sadly don't have the time to do that and they're just what I need.
