1. In answer to the studios around Esher question , We rehearse here @ http://www.airplaystudios.co.uk/ which is pretty much Sunbury , its clean, the PA's are good they include 4 Mic's per room (shoddy mice stands ) . The bigger rooms have excellent Pa's and they guy who runs the place is a session drummer who set it up as a place to practice . Thus easy going and quite picky about the studio room kits , we use an electric one anyway. The prices are tidy and parking ample and free. They do not provide Amps/ backline, you can rent a less than fantastic rehearsal amp from the guy for 2 quid on top of your room charge, or do what i do and use the free storage to hide your Trace Elliott from the Mrs ;-).
2. unfortunately Im the kind of guy who rests his thumb on the rear PU on a P/ J or J ,or rear humbucker on my Tbird I think this is why I've never really gotten on with pure P basses ... The Pickup cover arrived ala ebay .... i think its a Jazz one because it seems a lot smaller than i was imagining , guess i have to wait till i get home. my worry is that it wont bridge the entire split coil ...
3. Damn you , its ordered ;-) , the last time i played with bass with pickup covers on i found it very strange ... looks over comfort ;-)
4. The finish really does not photo well .... plugged in it really growl's ... I guess its been a very long time since I played a P split coil .. i'm tempted to take it rehearsal over the T-bird thursday ... Another idea was to make a black scratch plate up for it but i really like the play between the chrome and green. Im thinking to track down a neck ashtray ... without having to order from Thomman.
5. So the inspiration for this -rebuild was a few months ago in wunjo's on denmark street shopping for new toys .. when i spied An Aria ,CAT Pro 2 For the best part of 400 quid. I was disgusted by the price but my first bass was one of these in red - and it has lived in a cupboard sans case for years. This beast is a composite bodied ( fancy way of saying chipboard i think) heavy and passive but had a pretty decent neck even after all this time it feels comfy in my hands. Years ago I brutally refinished it away from the stock sparkle red ( old photo excuse the quality ) Car body spray to a horrific purple/blue (i was 17 and it seemed dead cool .) More picture of this brutal blue can be found but ... its not pretty guys So some serious elbow grease and nitromor's later It was cut back to this , ready for priming 5 coats of Undercoat , 10 coats of top coat lots of cutting back because I'd never used nitrocellulose paints before Here's the end result click to expand the images should be public on Google drive but too large to put up on here. There's a hard lacquer over the top comes courtesy of my local car repair guys, I was chatting to him while having a repair job done on my car ( insurance prang) who offered to spray it in their booth after he had finished with my bumper ... damn nice fellow ;-). It's a lot harder wearing than the nitro clear lacquer can I had bought to do it . I'd put the bridge ashtray on their as an afterthought but I think it looks great .. does anyone have a neck P ashtray going begging . Willing to put some money up for it ... or perhaps trade for a can of R&F Nitrocellulose Lacquer (Clear Top Coat).
6. I've got one of these , folds down nice and small and with a budgie chord around the front to ensure no fall forwards. Nothing moves at all i can go up and down curbs I mainly used it for my big old carpet covered trace elliot 7125 SMC A 1 X 15 combi with tweeter's and expansion cab, It shifts that no problem. Now it lives permanently in my car boot I've used it to move a washing machine and dishwasher , staff at curry's were not accomadating when i told them i wasnt parked 6 allotted spaces. 7. I've been in the process of trying to produce something like this except I've gone withe a P / J the body is finished without any mild road wearing/distressing my next challenge is to source A scratch plate as the the doer body is an old Aria CAT without one I believe i'm going to be crafting my own
8. I think this is VERY crowd / place dependent we try to recon a place a bit before we set our mind on a set. For our recent gig to a bunch or 20-30 something media types the biggest hitter was, a song i did not expect. Its All been done before - Barenaked ladies , annoying as my band force me to take lead vocals on it. whereas i normally get to avoid having a mic at all. Apparently i'm a vocal doppelganger. >.< its a killer on the voice . We did a bit of a late 90's early 00's bit at our last gig , this followed by a googoo dolls double of iris and slide and finishing with Everlong by the foo's
9. damn you , twit ... how am i supposed to not buy that 5 string now >.< .... i just have to keep focusing on that ugly as sin scratch-plate no-one mention that it could be wrapped in plastic or sprayed ... la la la not listening ... *sneaks off to the thomann site*
10. that's a real looker . While , im not very metal , my partner is a and shes also Latvian ;-) thus i approve of this bass ;-) .. FYI dont go to their facebook page at work ... its NSFW
11. left foot , where do you practice and what are the rates like ? I think we get a great deal and here http://www.airplaystudios.co.uk/ sometimes I wonder how he does it so cheaply . My tbird in a hard case is a pain in the ass just about fits horizontally in my beat up 307, I've not a nice folding trolley for the trace , not because i dont want to pay for the amp hire just because I like my sound out of my gear. Personally i think 2.50 as an option is alright to hire an amp, when were paying 36 quid inc PA ( one of the medium rooms) and while the tea / coffee making facilities arent boutique / craft press, Ive never had a problem finding a clean mug and in date milk.
12. I wouldn't say my standard Epi tbird is a one trick pony by a long shot , its not as versatile as my active status , i'd say it was very meat an potatoes its not going to do you an amazing slap sound but it really sits in mix. Tonal variation of where i play how ive got the picksups dialed in and subtle moves of the tone knob can turn it from a growly Rocker to a psudo upright with me muting and playing front PU only and using my thumb
13. Our rehearsal studio's does a flat rate of 36 quid for 4 hours which is a pittance if you want to hire kit its an extra 2.50 per piece but its not the best quality intended more for kids who don't drive to use. It comes with a decent PA and free parking ( important in London) . We all drag our own kit even the drummer who uses a Roland electric kit it does mean we lose about 30 minutes of setup time especially if someone it a bit late , but that means a bit of noodling at full volume for a change . Bonus fact. One of the main reasons we don't see too many basements in the UK is to with the ground , we have a relatively high water table here in the UK with the soil being often clay being an island . There are some places such a Bristol which is very hilly and due to the risk of subsidence the cost of putting in basements for extra stability makes sense . I used to practice in one such basement back in my university days the problem was that houses are usually still terraced so you have to keep the volume real low.
14. How much are we talking ... Could you not go at it with a woodfile and sandpaper?
15. Essh that's a bit of a blow back to the drawing board i guess.
16. I'm certainly no expert on electronics either perhaps someone much more knowledgeable can dime in . in other news I was in getting my car resprayed ( insurance job ,some numpty rammed me while on their phone) Chatting to the respray guy about me making a pigs ear of refinishing my bass .... and how I was worried at the Nitro lacquer wasn't ever going to set in these cold conditions .... turns out ... bass player and guitar re-finisher hobbyist .... says'd he's gonna lacquer spray it for me at lunch using their spray booth and some hard lacquer which will sit nicely on the Nitro paint.
17. That looks mighty fine indeed . * looks at online banking *
18. An extra Set of four strings well i guess I've never managed to break a low string .. but this seems like a missed steak ;-) Would you say that it was a playable instrument if the B String issues gets sorted, I worry if they have that issue that some manufacturers were putting 4 string PU's under 5 string covers. We can hope a good setup and restring would do it the world of good.Mind you i cant say i'd want to take it into my local place i feel a bit embarrassed lugging my EPI tbird in for setups charlie chandlers is a cave of vintage wonderment and i usually find the guy bent over some piece of vintage porn. Would you say the pickup was pretty much MM5 sized . Also Photo's please , before i get frustrated and pull the trigger on my own.
19. Burning questions from me How does it play with the electrics it has , and what kind of dimensions are we talking for the neck pocket and Pickup ?
20. I totally recommend that neck i've got one on my status Vintage P , its Rock solid the tuners might as well not be there because the thing stays in tune for weeks on end . GLWTS.
21. Don't bother with car paint , i know its a tenner more expensive but using the real stuff has been much better . Years ago i tried to refinish a body in car paint i wanted dark purple ;-) .. seems daft now. The colour didn't ever really set right , even after two months post the varnish coat it was not hardened , I popped it on a stand and the stand stuck to the body , i gave it another month and while it felt hard put it in a case and the fluff from case stuck to the surface ... in the end i had to sand it down and after nearly 15 years I've sanded the bass down and its going green. I used http://www.rothkoandfrost.com/nitro-cellulose-guitar-paint-aerosols/ One can of their primer and two of the colour coat , I have one tin of their nitro varnish to apply to it to finish which is where i'm now . Its a very slow process 2 coats a day with a 4 -5 hour re-coat time , using very very thin coats to avoid bubble run and orange peeling
22. The bodies are basswood so you never know , I'm in the process of respraying an old body with Nitro in a rather fetching British Racing Green , amazing how easy it is to get a good finish with decent Nitro paints ... not cheap mind ...
23. That's a shame , oh well , did they they do the sunburst for the price of the black ?
24. Here's hoping its a little diamond ...at worst it might have a fender profile neck .
