Considering our tops are probably the weakest part of the chain I want to take as much load from them as i can ,there's also a little bit of element of encouragement to me making this setup work because the singer went out and bought the PA , and hauls it to gigs ( a singer has arrived with more than a microphone) Making them /it work until the bands takings can fund something cool new and shiny feels better to me even if i could just splurge on something myself i'm already hauling more than enough. She couldn't have foreseen that the rest of the band would start the journey towards ampless ... A 400 watt Yammy Stagepass a good enough vocal only PA when you arent pumping all and sundry into it.

Source Audio Aftershock - Bass distortion/fuzz/overdrive £90

These are Absolutely fantastic , units I use one as a Tubescreamer , a RAT and a Big muff , this thing gives you all the benefit of " behaving like analog pedals with blend functionality but with the flexibility of pugging the thing in and swapping the "Pedal sim " for somthing else on the menu . A huge stable of options , And even the ability to switch it from " toggle to latch" for those ... i want my Fuzz in the Chorus only moments, So much versatility for the price , bargain. -
Now who would go and do that ay ... Cough .... this is exactly what i was looking for as i want to avoid Rack gear and it looks simply enough conceptually would you look at that its fallen off ebay ... Now ... I guess i have to decide what at frequency im crossing .... perhaps because its running to a dedicated bass amp rather than a sub it should shoot a little higher to 100 /120 rather than 80 ?

It Sounds like I should probably pick up a used crossover ... perhaps you could point me in the direction of something suitable , ideally smaller rather than bigger .... I really was looking to avoid ending up hauling a rack around with the next pickup being "proper" Active Tops

I've been pretty impressed both the sound and simplicity of load in /setup , but my ask has been the back room of the dog and duck rather than Knebworth / Wembley , Were running at about 30% of what the thing could put out. I'm being relatively careful not to damage anything in case there was something wrong and my back of a fag pack understanding could lead to damage The Setup > Old ebay special Soundcraft Mixer > Main outs into the Poweramp of a Yammy StagePass , back at the mixer 1 of 3 aux outs to the markbass Combo , (Sits behind me ) with a nice long speakon round the back of the drummer where my second NY121 cab sits. I mix a more " bass and vocal heavy Mix to this feed as (i don't have anything fancy to do a crossover, ) " and less of myself out the mains " , The other 2 aux outs go to some 80's area powered wedges on the floor which the guitarists both stand at with a " them heavy " feed. We snap a Photo of the Mixer dials and EQ in case anything gets jogged .... but were just basically adjusting 1 bloody big slider to suit the size of the space.

Online purchase and courier potential nightmare!

Ok Step 1 Breathe ... out Exhale ... your going to be ok ... this sucks but it happens and " buyer protection" is going to help you out. The Onus is on the delivery company to prove delivery to the correct address and recipient, not the other way around. If you claim you haven't received an item, the company should be able to provide proof, such as a signature, a photo of the delivery location, or GPS data. You are entitled to ask for this proof if there's a dispute, and if they can't provide it, you can escalate the issue. Consumer rights are all on your side here ... your gonna be ok Oh ... an edit because i wanted to add something . YOUR CONSUMER RIGHTS Your contract is always with the retailer – not the courier. Contact the retailer as soon as possible if your order has been lost, damaged or delayed. The retailer is responsible under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to ensure your goods arrive safely without undue delay and within 30 days or placing the order. S29 Consumer Rights Act 2015 states that the goods remain at the trader’s risk until they come into the physical possession of you or your appointed agent. It is the seller’s legal responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. They should contact the courier and let you know what has happened to your item. It is not your responsibility. -
In a flash of either brilliance or stupidity , I'm actually using a my old markbass cmd121p combo amp as our sub .. with the Tweetr disconnected inside, it seems to really supercharge the limited low end from our singers previously vocal only Yamaha stage pass 500. The combo has t been working a treat ... ... Has XLR in and It's light powerful and expandable with the second cab on the left side. I'm sure we loosing lots of sub 40hz frequency from it not being a real sub but they are compact loud and super portable and don't have pole sockets but other than that I'm struggling to see any downside. Our setup with this also has janky old two 80s peavy active 15 wedges 'which also sounds great .. but look ancient .. so much so the guitarist went out and bought a second one to match when we found the first as a giveaway on Facebook marketplace

A man can have other hobbies than music right 😉 .. I assemble and paint scale toy soldiers / make terrain .. Then myself and other adults in their 30- 40s have games against each other 😉 . It's quite social we also consume beverages and converse .. or not / some people take it far too seriously when they don't win , There are also big competitive tournaments .. I don't expect to win the few I enter but I have twice done so in my years of playing .. usually doubles .. as my buddy / rhythm guitarist is far better than I. It's an equally expensive hobby as music .. or drugs ... 😉

I use them to make scale model barbed wire , to do this I wrap them round a pencil to create a coil . The other solution is to keep a set of part worns in my gig bag just in case of a single breakage there's nothing worse than one brand new super bright and 3 worn in strings.

Must be the only thing miss about working in our office since going fully remote , Scrounging in the Waste electricals bin , Pretty sure this old surface pro came from there too , but yes a 4 is a bit slow for actual office work these days . So much great stuff used to get timed out or taken out of circulation due to mergers / policy change , Non standard gear couldnt be refreshed and we weren't allowed to sell it on as business had to prove it had been " ethically disposed of " , / lots of forms stating it had been manually disposed of by one of the team. The TPM Module fiasco had me fill by boots with I7 Thinkpads , which i'd rebuild for friends and family as chromebooks with either Flex , forced upgrade to Win 11 or Nix for the more adventurous. My Current home theatre projector used to live in the main boardroom ... but apparently " wasn't bright enough" Translation They wanted a 4k 100 inch telepresence screen like they had seen in another boardroom , one chromecast later and i've been using it as a smart projector for the last 3 years.

Aye but you said it better .... " 🙆♂️

This is going to be super heavily genre / band dependent .... If i used the tone I need for for example " Placebo" or some other Pop punk in a some blues funk /jazzy number ... the looks i'd get from the audience and my band mates would turn me to stone . There's only so much that can be done with Pick > fingers and onboard Eq , not everyone needs a Fuzz / synth pedal but for some gigs i'd be lost without them

I will actually take this if its still going , i've just done a Clean " FORCED " windows 11 install on my old Surface Pro 4 ( would be Chrome OS flex if it didn't brick the touch screen ) Its only getting used for dinner table Iplayer / youtube duties at the moment but it would be good to have a spare . Drop me a PM

If your looking at doing this on a budget , Can i recommend a Valetone Gp-5 , Im using this is a 70 quid IR loader / amp sim tool , https://www.andertons.co.uk/valeton-gp5-multi-effects-processor-amp-and-ir-loader/ have a watch of this it should jump to the bass settings section at about 15 mins in. I use mine ( hell i use the finger bass preset ) in place or an amp straight into a the PA system , my setup is this on the end of my pedalboard straight into the rehearsal space PA . I can adjust any of the settings straight from my phone i dont bother with any of the effects which are a bit " meh " but as a tiny amp in a box its fantastic.
-
So Gigged mine again Saturday night , Straight into PA using the GP-5 as my Amp and Cab sim , Setup was a cheap Yamaha Stage 300 PA ,supported by my Markbass cmd121P acting as a subwoofer out of the monitor send daisyed on to an 80's era powered peavy wedge for some foldback. Both guitarists were using sims ( one fancy and expensive the other cheap ) My only downside was that I couldn't easily tweak my EQ , my active 2 band couldn't cut any more out , if i'd had my phone connected i could have easily done so but i'd turned it off and shoved it in my gig bag to avoid that " Da da da " lesson is now airplane mode with bluetooth connected within reach. For anyone carrying a backup amp this device is a no brainer ... I have found that im struggling to find good quality combined Sim and Cab files even ones of tone3000 seem a bit " crap" compared to the out of the box option so im just using the fingerstyle or pick preset with my own tweaks , anyone got any that work well ?
-
I've wrapped scratchplates before , I had a ebay bitsa with an " interesting screw layout " , bit of cheap matt black worked wonders and it wore well for years. I ended up giving the bass away to a friends daughter who was playing guitar and wanted to expand her vocab to bass as well i bet its still good. Oh found pics from .... " weird pearl to black ... dont worry the status didnt go anywhere it was in a gigbag after a run out
-
My next attempted solution is now going to be shoving a Valtone GP5 into the Fx return ... and just using the power stage.

Our local rehearsal studios has these Laney digbethsin combo form in each room .. some kind of sponsor / deal / package from Laney .. all their gear is now Laney .. I'm really struggling with it. Is there a secret trick ... Why does the head had a mid control but the combo does not .... The lack of mid control means that I'm struggling really hard to adjust my tone .. I don't play a mid focused bass( old smoothie ray) I imagine it works great on something that is .. like a precision but I'm having to stick an EQ up front to do anything with it ..

Fender Rumble Bass Combos - Advice Please
synthaside replied to Cornwall Steve's topic in Amps and Cabs
I know you have suggested that a Markbass combo might be out of your price range , what about used ? I regularly use my older Markbass CMD121P for practice at home ( use seperate amp and cab out gigging) when compared to the various newer rumbles around the local rehearsal spaces , it blows their socks off in terms of clarity at volume . I have to say when I know were going to be playing in a place with a rumble 100 I commit to taking my own markbass as it can be frustrating as no matter what i do with the EQ they seem to stay very wooly as the volume goes up , it could be the way it reacts to my active bass rather than a passive fender style one ... but i wouldnt say i love the " tone shaping options" I used to have a bunch of behringer ultrabass combo's both the 800 and the 1200 i loved the kickback feature and they were very loud , but yes lacking in tone options A solution to do what you want on a budget could be to you use the power section on those Behringers bypass their EQ and use a more modern device like a valetone Gp5 or perhaps their more analogue dapper bass instead https://www.thomann.co.uk/valeton_dapper_bass_mini.htm , the Amp in port on the back will let you harness the poweramp section direcly bypassing the EQ if my old foggy memory serves -
Im sure the more seasoned amp knowers will be along shortly but ill ask a few pre-reqs 1 , What type of bass is it Active or passive , if active it could be that your active battery is low ... on my older stingrays this is how they go before they cut out. 2. Are we talking zero sound / noise at all or is the volume is incredibly low 3. Have you tested the cable / bass on another amp or even just by unplugging the bass itself and touching the jack to see if you generate feedback noise.
-
That Sounds excellent , All our test runs went really well , I settled on the pick bass preset rather than finger preset , a bit of EQ magic , on the Gp-5 to push my own mids Then Going straight to our rather modest PA with zero on stage amp ... i've donated my markbass CMD121P Combo to act as a powered Woofer going into its return ... and it sounds really rather tidy. This is all in aid of a Gig with no provided PA support , in a small pub , I also had a go with the guitarists fancy new quad cortex ... lots of good options the Simulated SVT and it sounded VERY similar to the Rig Capture i'd uploaded onto the GP5 .. All in all im confident enough to gig it.

I used to have one of the 2000's era Squire P5's that they did for a while calling it a P bass for the body shape .. when its got J pickups i found the Low B pretty flubby , https://reverb.com/uk/item/83693497-2000-squier-5-string-precision-bass-special-sherwood-green-w-jazz-bass-style-soapbar-pickups?page=1&filter=all
