Why have I only just discovered Iron Maiden / Steve Harris??
Dood replied to bagsieblue's topic in General Discussion
I think I learned the whole of the Killers album by ear when I was at school. Just couldn't get enough of it! Yeah, love a bit of Maiden. I'd love to get my hands on one of the 'arry Signature basses. They sound good in review and people seem to like them. Big chunky bass necks -
Welcome Ixlramp. Nice to know we have a member with more than a passing interest in ERB.
Yes! - There's actually quite a few of us that love ERBs & ERGs on Basschat!
We do Sledge Hammer Peter Gabriel ,For example with the brass & Horns & on top of that I use loads of octaver & compression for the bass tone , for small gigs I use one the PA amps to power the compact (no bass head), I'm thinking BB2 as the pa would sit nicely on top of that .
I'd naturally lean towards the BB2 I think. Then have a pair for bigger gigs. You also have the option of using them as PA speakers for mini gigs (they sound ace) but also, you back will thank you verses carrying one big cab. Had my funds have reached I would probably have done the same, but I could only really stretch to buying BT2 in the first instance rather than a pair of BB2's.

The thing which really pulls me toward the Big Twin, (other than it providing a hefty amount of low end!!!!) Is the wide dispersion tweeter. The clarity when I move around on stage is much improved especially as it carries some upper mid range frequencies too I understand. In terms of synth sounds - if we're talking polyphony and also all the effects that come with them, then I'd probably go with BB2's or Big Twin II. - BB2 would be great for the stereo effects if you run two amplifier channels! If however your synth bass sounds are all just low bass range effects then maybe you won't be so fussed about the top end sparkle of a shimmer reverb, ping pong delays and rich swirling stereo flanged bass synth chords!

I spotted 'Norfolk' in the title as I wandered through BC this morning - and since there's so few of us around these here parts, I thought I should pop my head around the door! Ey! Hi!! Welcome to BassChat! Yup, you've got just the right amount of obsessive qualities to join the slightly unhinged mirth here.. Wow, I haven't been to sevenstring.org for many years - last time I did was when I was in a band with Andy James. He said some nice stuff about my playing on there. Love ERBs, though in my current band I'm actually having lots of fun with a clanky 4 stringer - but there's another little project simmering away needing some serious low end soon! In terms of amps, I think my backline has gone the way it always wanted to - I have a sort of PA time monitor behind me (albeit high end I guess) as I've always obsessed (surprised? no!) over amplifiers and cabinets. I think if I can make that part of the chain 'invisible' then I only have to concern myself with a few pedals and playing the instrument. Anyway, enough rambling... Dan

Who on Basschat has the most expensive bass?
Dood replied to Jonny Walker's topic in General Discussion
It's not the most expensive, but given an opportunity to show some beautiful bass porn, I'm there. ShukerGuitars.co.uk - all custom. It's made of unobtanium-kryptonite and was assembled by Shuker using nothing but darkest of dark arts, over seen by the mighty Oracle Roob. -
Ah right, does it require any setting up after you have connected them or does it automatically detect each other? I'm thinking about hooking mine up to a tech 21 midi mouse. Something small and simple.
Mine auto detected. The only setting up you'll have to do is to arrange your patches so that they are easy to get to. My controller gives me access to ten patches across 5 buttons at a time. I would arrange the patches so that 1-5 made some sort of sense in performance. Often I do 1=dry 2=driven 3=slap clean 4=comp octave 5=clean solo/special FX etc etc So if I go up a bank on the controller I will have a similar arrangement of different sounds across the same buttons.

Following on from BassApprentice's thread, I would like to hear (and see) examples of basses that have both a split coil and a '51 coil'. The arrangement would be having the Split in the usual place and the '51' nearer the neck - oh yes! I'm not sure about placement at the moment - think of it as either half of the Sheehan Neck Humbucker - it will either go up against the neck or up against the split coil. - I've spotted a Shuker bass that had a neck positioned pickup and that I understand had been upgraded to the Dimarzio DP Humbucker. One of my students has a Yamaha BB714BS and I think that also sounds great - especially with those huge rails on the neck pickup. It's a theory I want to investigate. Anyone done it? Can I hear please?

P bass with custom '51/Mike Dirnt style pickguard?
Dood replied to BassApprentice's topic in Repairs and Technical
The 60th Anniversary P also had a Split Coil and that pick guard shape. I've also seen a Custom Shop 55 Relic with the same if that helps.
And I like it - a lot, The Mike Dirnt and the CS Relic both looking epic with a maple board. I really want to get my hands round a MD bass for a good test drive! -

I use this: http://www.kentonuk..../usb-host.shtml Connected to a normal MIDI Foot Controller (Mine is a Roland FC-50) It will do patch changes and a few other bits n' bobs but it's only really the patch changes I wanted. By 'do' I mean convert the MIDI messages from the FC-50 in to USB-MIDI that the MS can handle. It won't do everything I understand, but for the money it does enough. Also means that my TC G-System can also control the MS as part of it's own patch changes - not that I've tried it yet!

Oh and on the subject of steel strung - make sure the action is nice and low, especially check the nut height. Too high and I guarantee Barre chords on the lower frets are going to be a nightmare for small hands. My last bit of advice is to take a good guitarist or teacher with you when you got to select one as they *should* spot all of these things quickly.

There are some truly horrible 'children guitars' on the market. It seems that 3/4 sized guitars usually have 3/4 of the amount of time and effort spent on them to make them good. Nylon strings are usually kinder to small hands but, most Nylon strung guitars have much wider necks, so little hands will struggle anyway. I learned when I was around that age on a steel strung and I was fine, so I'd recommend the slimmer neck over the wider with the nylon strings. If you can't find a smaller guitar that plays very well, your next option I suppose is a full size - but go for a semi-acoustic, as they often have thinner bodies and sometimes bowl backs which mean smaller frames can reach over. Also, the 'Parlour' body sized guitar is much smaller than the Dreadnought or Jumbo body of a 'full on' acoustic guitar. I suppose there's the smaller size guitar such as the Martin 'Ed Sheeran' guitar which is downsized. Quite a nice little machine. Also, go with well known brands to begin with. Yamaha etc etc. I'm currently playing Faith acoustics and they are really nice.

Roll up Roll Up folks!! £325 for an 800W lightweight amp AND official foot switch. It's in excellent condition and has never been mistreated. As I've said before, I don;t really want to sell this amp, but I have set the price to move quickly. It's all parcelled up and ready to go. You can arrange your own courier, collect or I will arrange shipping for you, it's all good with me. Ridiculous bargain right here!
Yeah, that's what I thought... :/ Haha, "legend"... But thanks, I guess We're kinda already in a band together. We just have to tweak it some more!
Hell yeah we are Feel lucky to know ya buddy! So, I never wanted to put this bass up for sale anyway and despite the bills not really going away, I'm withdrawing it and other stuff will have to go up for sale instead. Frankly daft giving this away for such a huge amount off, right?
On selling a bass at a £100 loss to me, I recently got one of, "Please can I have it for £25 less than the asking price, and INCLUDING shipping to Poland?" Shipping to Poland will be another £45 off as well. (£25 shipping, £20 insurance). Naturally I bit his arm off! Why miss out on a chance to make a loss like that! You don't get those chances every day!
Yes, "I want £50 off and shipping thrown in" is not ever going to be well received on an amplifier that is so cheap already that units that are considerably less powerful are going for more money. I just can't make it more of a deal than that lol.

Do you use manufacturer strings on your bass?
Dood replied to darkandrew's topic in General Discussion
I used to have a summer job in a cannery. We made beans for a couple of supermarkets as well as a couple of well known brands, though they all came from the same factory, the recipes and manufacturing instructions were actually all slightly different. Maybe it's the same with strings?
In some cases, yes it certainly is! Building to a different 'recipe'. Another manufacturer that does similar is Eminence who make speakers for a lot of companies building speaker cabinets, however there will be such a difference between one 10" bass speaker verses another that they will be incompatible in the same cabinet despite being visually the same to the casual viewer. -
