ABSOLUTELY these for a four stringer: http://daddario.com/DADProductDetail.Page?ActiveID=3769&productid=380&productname=EXL160BT_Nickel_Wound__Balanced_Tension_Medium__50_120 They are gauged 50-67-90-120 There's the added tension to allow the A, D and G string to be dropped a semitone and the 120 works very well for the C#, giving you a nice solid feel to the low notes. No need to buy specialist sets or leave strings off. Oh and they're D'addario.

If you were going to buy a P bass, what model would you get?
Young Mr Dood recently sold me a Fender Japan 62RI Precision that I am rather enjoying.
I'm a huge fan of Fender Japan basses! I'm trying not to think about selling that one it's quite a peach! I still have a pair of 80's PJ's that will keep me busy though! -
http://barefacedbass.com/product-range/FR800.htm Something like this would do the job nicely... I think there is a bergatino version as well..
I'd love a pair of those, but for now I am using the Barefaced Big Twin II and the Bergantino B-Amp which is like having a top spec PA behind me!

Before D'Addario made them I have used Kalium for a massive 190 gauge to go down a tone lower the F#. I think Newtone would be a great option for big gauges as unfortunately Kalium is expensive to import.
-
D'Addario do up to 170 gauge, so you could make up a set to suit using a standard 6 string set with a 170 for the F#
If money wasn't a issue then a Shuker JJ Burnel Carbonlite... For around Fender American price range I'd be looking towards Shuker again... If I had the money I'd be on the phone to Jon ordering an unlined fretless PJ right now...
So let me get this straight, in case I've not understood.. You're shopping for a ... you know.. a Shuker!? -
Good lord! That's a peach, yeah I would like to dabble with one of those!

If you're staying on British soil I think it'd be hard to beat the Shuker JJB. I'm yet to hear anything but rave reviews of them. On my shopping list for sure is the Carbon-Lite JJB; or rather a custom version that Jon and I have dreamed up recently. -
Agreed Pete, but that's not the deal, the deal is that they are so f*****g good and SO cheap. These two beauties together cost me less than a used MIM Precision with enough change to buy a fair few sets of strings, and bot blow the socks off most MIAs This baby had without doubt the definite flatwound/pick tone I've ever come across
A great contender!! I have the Aria Pro II alternative from the Matsumuko factory. it's a great bass and cost very little in comparison to the 'real thing'. A fifth of the price if you are very lucky. Love it. -
That goes for any courier.
I had used them lots and even recommended them to people they were fine until they smashed my gear up then they did not want to know so obviously I do not use them or recommend any more I now use parcel force 48 they are probably no better if something happens but at least they are a few quid cheaper
I can't risk sending kit worth as much as a bass guitar if I know the insurance is worthless - hell, I don't know why we have to pay insurance ON TOP OF the cost to send parcels anyway. Talk about advertising incompetence.

A Fender Power Jazz Bass Special in Candy Apple Red. I was 13 I think. I still have the magazine clipping too! It took me over 15 years odd to finally getting one. It's serial matches the magazine clipping year too by coincidence. I've since upgraded it with a sexy flip paint finish, EMG pickups and a Glockenklang 3 band preamp. It's a great little bass and it isn't going anywhere. However a second one has recently joined the flock and it is a stunning example that will probably get some sort of update treatment too. Somewhat humorously I think I got the first one around 2007 time, I'm not sure - Anyway, it never gigged until this year!
I. Used to use them until they smashed a bass up I sold it was in a case then a box and they would not pay out when I claimed as they said the case was not correct packaging wtf. Oh and if your unlucky enough to deal with a lady called Amy she is one rude bitch
Oh dear! That doesn't sound good at all! Slightly worrying as they request instruments sent in cases and I too also use shipping cartons where possible. It seems the couriers that do care are in a severe minority?

I found Direct Courier Solutions who specifically 'do' musical instrument shipping with Insurance. I've used them and had no complaints but I know they are less known so didn't find any reviews online.

Chameleonic. Modest.

Yup, I've just been reading the news myself. I've worked along side Cass for many years at Guitar Interactive Magazine. We saw each other often between filming, I'd recorded demo bass for some of his tracks in the past and I was fortunate enough to have performed my favourite MC songs with Michael on stage a few years ago. Totally in shock, I could't believe what I was reading. A great musician with a huge amount of talent taken too soon. RIP Cass.
It's tempting. How many amps do you get out of that setup? I have a few digital pedals
Genuinely, I've not charged my pack for weeks and I've certainly had the equivalent of three gigs out of it powering 4 pedals. - It does of course depend on the current draw from the pedals as to how much life you get. It can vary greatly!
-
I'd love to have a look inside - my SVT2 Pro (an older model) could easily withstand knocks and drops throughout it's life on the road. I'd be concerned where the cost cutting was made in this copy. Cheaper components? Poor soldering? Weak PCB boards?

What were you doing when you were Eleven years old?
You're lucky. I can't remember where my car is. *Mumble, dribble*
ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!! -
dood - is it any less noisy than a decent PSU?
Well, I guess being batteries only, it should be dead silent in comparison as it is never connected to anything that can create noise. Yes, a really good quality power supply shouldn't be allowing any 'noise' through anyway, but we do know that some pedals don't seem to want to play ball together with certain types of PSU. In laziness, I like this method as it's one less lead to have trailing. (Which given the placement of power sockets in some venues and rehearsal rooms makes for a little less hassle!)
Well, you should have been practicing like this lad......
The days of yesteryear where I spent many, many hours being able to just shred my bass. I think age 13-14 I had mastered many of my favourite albums. I'd get home (which was miles from any of my friends) and spent the evenings playing a whole album from start to finish. This was, of course pre-internet and I spent countless hours in front of my cassette player, betamax video player and any books I could borrow so that I can learn these songs myself. I wouldn't give up until I'd got every note sounding right! I can only apologise to my family members who had to put up with it night after night. I'm now approximately 100 years old, tired, worn down and unable to remember where my car keys are. -
I'm not surprised with all those strings on a bass Thanks for posting the pic.
Ha ha ha! Yes I have to admit, the latest projects and bands I've been playing with haven't really needed anything below Drop D or 5 frets above! It has been very liberating turning up with a battered old P bass instead!

I use something like this with eight Eneloop high capacity rechargeable AA batteries in. Being rechargeables, they are 1.2V batteries, giving me a 9.6V output. Great for pedals. Some of these enclosures need rewiring for the correct polarity but it's a 5 minute job. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8-AA-12V-Battery-Holder-Case-Enclosed-Box-With-On-Off-Switch-/262096603493?hash=item3d062cc965:g:rBMAAOSwx-9WxT1T You can find them cheaper than this for sure. I think I paid about £2 for mine - it has a power on off switch too, which means you can leave all of your pedals attached to each other then use the master power switch to turn all off at the same time. You could even use one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hot-Selling-12V-Battery-Clip-Slot-Storage-Holder-Box-Case-For-8pcs-AA-Batteries-/281845780265?hash=item419f514f29:g:GBwAAOSw5ZBWNvda Interestingly, I haven't recharged my batteries in weeks and it is still going strong!!
