I use the Novation LaunchKey and am able to map my controller keys to my DAW and thus yes there are occasions that it has helped with workflow. The transport controls are useful. That said, as soon as I started using a remote control app on my ipad (e.g Logic has an remote app) I haven't used the LaunchKey keys as much. They are accurate on my unit and anything the helps workflow has got to be a good thing.

Best D class amp for my P bass ... please read on it's more complicated!
Dood replied to Mr Fudge's topic in Amps and Cabs
Before you change anything - where are your cabinets pointing? Are they flat on the floor stacked pointing at your knees when you play? Get them angled up so that they are either pointing towards your ears or stack them on something taller so they are closer to your head. You won't need to crank the amp so hard so that it bumps in to compression land and you'll hear yourself more clearly. If you are relying on this set up as your bass sound, maybe worth getting the PA to assist then dial in a sound on the amp to hear yourself clearly rather than please the punters out front The AE cabs are capable of a clean sound so once the PA has taken care of your big 'out front' sound you won't need so much low end from your backline (meaning it will be easier to make out notes) -
It has been said before and I will say it again. That whistling after a gig is ear damage, permanent damage. You wake up next morning and it's gone, but the next rehearsal it's back. That's not the same damage, that's yet more on top. Hearing damage is cumulative and one day waking up, the whistle won't have gone. You may even have more than one whistle, white noise or even a low level hum that sounds like someon sat outside with a car engine running. Get proper moulded ear plugs. I use 64 Audio filtered plugs personally as well as their line of moulded in-ear monitors, because I already know what hearing damage feels like. Don't put it off, just stick it on the credit card or something!

Trace Elliot did do the BFC that had a fifteen and four tens in one box. The four ten inch speakers were split in to 'left and 'right' thus operating in stereo whilst the 15" speaker received bi-amped lows from the matching Trace head. Tecamp did the Bad Cab that had all sorts of cones in it: 15's,12's,10's and a pair of tweeters.

Fret size and fingerboard radius for low action
Dood replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
One of the reasons that Guitarists suggest that a flatter radius can give you a lower action is because the more rounded a fretboard is, the more likely that string bends will choke off. If I string bend a tone or more on my vintage bass, you can as good as say goodbye to the note. My 7 string, which I believe has a 20" radius, well you can bend all day without choking a bass string. For the vintage radius, one way to endeavour to get round that is to raise the action some more - thus, a flatter radius can be set up for a lower action if you are in to your Dave Gilmour m3rd bends! -
I wonder if Leo tried the reversed position in early prototypes?
My Fender Power Jazz Bass Specials from the 80's have reversed P's. Japanese made and absolutely stunning instruments (well, after my upgrades anyway!)
I'm currently having Jon Shuker make me a neck...he'd be my number one choice.
As would mine. Brilliant.
I love the sound of a bass but am increasingly finding it difficult to practice my bass playing. It is the lack of melody content in the bass that is the problem. Bass is essential in a band situation but how do you practice songs, songs that only feature root G, C and D notes? Even if it is more challenging than that, it is still hard to practice. All suggestions and advice welcomed. Thanks.
Although it may seem like a really obvious answer, I'd say seek out an enthusiastic bass teacher who can help inspire you as well as get you on your way with playing!

I will add photographs later: Here's an opportunity to get a full set of Japan PJ Pickups, TBX tone control and the unique (I suppose) tone system that came with these basses. The Preamp takes a 9V battery which powers a two position control active filter which isn't as far as I know a million miles from that used by Wal/ACG? Don't quote me on that but this is a very cool system that allows a huge range of tones available. I will mark the cables with what connects to what and I am pretty sure I have a set of those very rare JBS knobs to go on the kit as well that I will include! Dead easy to install, but you will need a soldering iron or a friend who can do it for you! The PJ pickups have had the pole pieces cleaned and protected from any further wear later as well as a new set of official Fender covers. I also have a second set of PJ pickups that I will sell too and then possibly another PJBS preamplifier. Price includes delivery to the mainland, extra will be needed to cover the cost of shipping elsewhere.

Brilliant and effortless purchase from Chris. I am the Rogue Leader! - Sorry, I mean, I now own a Rogue Leader!

Definitely try out the TC Electronic BH800 to add to the list, but for Double Bass as well? The Bergantino B|Amp probably trumps the lot for feature set.

I went to see a close and dear friend last week who is on tour with Paul Gilbert right now. It was a great gig, then afterwards my mate came out to grab me and go back stage to hang with Paul and band mate, the rather cool Pete Griffin on bass.
Bass as a melodic and lead instrument is as valid as virtually any other instrument. It's people's narrow-mindedness that's the problem. People have preconceived ideas of what an instrument should, and shouldn't do.
x1M

Which octavers track down the lowest? - I guess that rules out any Analogue Octave effect..

Could also be a good idea and solution yes!!
That's the badger. So when is the dood self build making an appearance?
The self build is on the shelf for a bit! Now the Fischer stick has come along there's less urgency to come up with a solution. The ability to run stereo down an XLR cable as well as being a small lightweight unit is a real winner. There's also a level switch for low and high impedance earphones too! It was worth the extra money.

Thanks guys! Will look in to! Dan

If the jack IS wired correctly, then if there isn't anything connected to it, the circuit is not complete and a break in the power path will mean that the device shouldn't be able to draw any power. Yes, I would check as BRX says that there aren't any opportunities for wire to touch each other and that would include making sure there isn't a problem with the battery clip. I have, just once, seen an open type which had a hair thin wire strand sticking out touching the opposite terminal. The likelihood of that is slim, but worth checking. You say the 'tech is stumped'. The installer is actually a tech? Or just a bloke at a shop who knows how to use a soldering iron? Continuity testing, even basic use of a 'multimeter' should be able to track down how this type of preamplifier is remaining powered up.

I've temporarily shelved the plan whilst other stuff is taking over my spare time, but I have at least ordered my sockets ready!

I love the idea but I can't get my head round the lack of efficiency having a pickup so far away from the strings under the pick guard. It's got to be a massively overwound pickup to get the level high enough or the P pickup quiet to balance it's output?
I've actually used one of those on a dep gig. That'll do the job nicely.

Pilfered. These will do nicely for the drummist and guitar player who are always wired. Or the Behringer PM1? That'll work with the XR18 won't it?

Brilliant, thank you Ordered!
Right! Brilliant! It has arrived already! Can't wait to try it out! Really pleased with it so far - a lot smaller than I thought and very light too!
Cheers dood!
No problem!!
After reading this thread I've just booked my appointment for a test, hopefully leading to having a moulded set made. I've used the Christmas tree ones for years but never got used to them so often haven't bothered putting them in or wear only one. Not good. With the big six - oooh coming next May and over 40 years working in loud environments it's a wonder I've any hearing left. time for action at last. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. Frank.
Yes!!! Good on ya! I hope the hearing test goes well for you! - I get my lug'oles checked when I have my eyes tested every two years. it's good to keep an eye on any degradation I may be suffering. What's interesting is that when I wear earplugs for a long two hour gig, I actually feel less worn out too. There must be something about having your ear drums pummelled constantly that has a bearing on well-being too! Maybe it's just me ha ha!! That said, I LOVE my in-ear monitors, a whole new level of musical comfort
