    Well there bridge and knobs definitely aren't stock so could be that. Standard radius and Fender pickguard. It could be the black knobs and the bridge is a bit shiny for a real 1976er.

    Would you take a very close 'law suit' model as an option Shambo? As an example, I have a 76 model and when it came to do some upgrades I just put official Fender parts on. The thing that made me chuckle is that the pickguard I put on the bass didn't need any new holes drilling! You don't even get that between Fender's own models he he! I'll post a picture of my own Ash/Maple beauty in a bit.

    I also wondered about the Valve DI Preamps from ART and Presonus too. They look quite small and may well do the trick.

    The EMG PJ set is a powerful set with a big punchy low end, though you will see countless comments online about the pickups sounding sterile and flat. Which is utter nonsense.

[/quote] Actually, I'd say not - This bass is a Japanese Jazz Bass Special which technically wasn't a Duff McKagan bass. These were stock rather like my pair of Power Jazz Bass Specials. The newer Mexican Duff models do indeed have pickups to match the upgrades that Duff McKagan made to his own basses over the years. Interestingly, the original Jazz Bass Specials don't have the same neck as the version Duff had and subsequently the Mexi signature models. His own white bass and possibly the black version has a P neck on it whilst the stock JBS basses have a J neck. That said, it doesn't detract one bit from the fact that these Japanese basses are stunning and amongst the best to come out of Fender Japan. Case in point, I have a CIJ precision neck here which is far nicer than the current Mexi equivalent. Good luck with the sale!

[/quote] If you don't have a preamp too, then no, just take the battery out. The pickups themselves are passive and don't require the battery to operate. if you do have a preamp such as the Glockenklang unit Martin installs, then a quick look at the installation guide would allow you to lift the lead for the LED supply without disabling the preamp as well.

    I love the combination of the rich body colour and the maple fretboard. Yes, I like that a lot! I also think that putting the pickups underneath the chrome covers retains the vintage look along side the bug hefty bridge. I think I prefer that headstock over the Epi' one too, it seems to so with the body shape angles. Just me I guess. Congratulations Muzz. I do enjoy seeing Franken' basses and this one looks as if it were meant to be all along.

    TC Spectracomp by a good distance. It can be 'one of those' invisible pedals that does the job with transparency - sometimes not even noticing how much it's doing a good job. Pick another preset and it's a squishy full-band Ross type compressor, another preset and it leaves the lows alone and brickwalls high frequencies. I mean, in terms of flexibly and copying what pretty much every other compressor's USP is on the market.. for the money, it's crazy. I also have the Hypergravity which can do the same but has more control knobs on top.

    Having spotted that my donor bass has a reverse P pickup in it, it looks like the MM pickup can drop straight in to the MM sweet spot!

[/quote] I also wanted to add that I am lucky to be able to share the stage with very talented drummers mostly who are able to get the best out of their kits without leathering the last bit of life out of them.     Excellent, thank you everyone. The next question I suppose is to ask where the pickup poles are! With reference to the 12th fret I suppose would be the best 'zero' point. I've a rough measurement of 35.5cm to the centre of the pole piece for the front coil and 38mm to the centre of the rear. Agreed?

    I'm sure there was a thread, or at least a discussion in a thread somewhere about the relative positioning across MM bass models of the single pickup. Now, logic would tell me that they are all in the same place, but, MM experts, are they? This is for a bit of a project idea and am just gathering 'data' as it were.

[/quote] DC's are one of my favourite actually! - They are raspy and are not dissimilar to a MusicMan pickup in sound. I think the CS pickups are smoother in the top end and some have said less of a bump in the tone (mids) but I can't test that myself to say for sure. I have a couple of basses with the normal EMG P and J style active pickups (not in soaps bars) and I love them. I've found that the Glockenklang 3 band Pre pairs really well with EMGs too. As for comparing the X series - I've not had a chance, but I think I am more likely to go with the non-X versions judging by what others have said about them. That's in no way derogatory, they are just different. As I 'know' the non-X versions and certainly not in any position to shell out £150 for a set of X series, I will stick with what I am familiar with in case the X -Series doesn't do the same!

    You'd need a type for four strings so that each blade aligns properly with the strings, regardless of shell size.
