1. When I first looked I thought it was a shoe insole at the end!
2. I think it's been through a wood chipper, if not, then it should be put through one post haste.
3.
I have had a few 4 string stingrays in my hands and found them to be a bit chunky and heavy for my liking. However the Sterling 4 is much more my cup of tea. Smaller, lighter, 3 way switch and lovely slim neck which suited my relatively small hands.
Very much as above, I have long struggled with Stingrays they were all very much "meh" I recently picked up a Sterling Ray34, I really liked the way it played but it sounded woeful compared to the Stingrays....a Delano pickup and a John East preamp later and finally I have the Musicman bass I always lusted after......just need a sunburst fretless and pickup and preamp and bank loan and doh!
4. My mates were out nicking cars and bikes and getting arrested, I decided that wasn't the best idea, spent £25.00 on a Satellite strat copy (which I still have) I spent all day every day practicing various punk rock classics, then decided I preferred the bass guitar (thanks Sid) managed to avoid a criminal record and the rest they say is history
5. Having finally got the sound I wanted out of my Ray34 all I need now is an unlined fretless one with a rosewood board and a sunburst finish.....but I don't think they are available sadly
6. I tie a loose knot in my cables after use, 9 times out of 10 the next time I dig them out they are fine, the 1 in 10 occasion when they are not I swear loudly and frequently about the fact that I clearly remember putting as many tangles as possible in the damn thing at the last gig
7. We did a spectacular album launch many years back and hired in fancy lighting and an industrial sized smoke machine....the only snag was the wired remote for the smoke machine was nowhere near long enough to reach the lighting desk.....our lighting guy / roadie / drinking buddy said he could just nip to the side of the stage give it a quick squirt at the end of a song giving us some nice smoke for the following song....this worked wonderfully for the first 3 or 4 songs until he eventually pushed the lock button in his haste to get back to the desk, over the next couple of minutes everything disappeared into a thick fog, we had to stop playing, cue a little voice at the front of stage "sorry I think I F**ked it up". Took about 15 minutes for the smoke to thin enough to resume playing....one of those wonderful Spinal Tap moments in my gigging career
8. I picked up a Ray 34 3 band eq model a few months back for £400, I am still desperate to love a Musicman bass, I have previously owned 3 USA Stingray's and have sold them all as I just couldn't find a sound I liked.....anyway I was seriously unimpressed with the sound of the Ray 34, the tonal range is nowhere near as broad as its American brother......as a last ditched effort I purchased a John East pre-amp and a Delano pickup.......finally I have the Stingray I always wanted, it now has the full growl that I always found the ones I had lacked, so I am a happy bunny, the biggest problem is £400 for the Bass plus £200 for the pre-amp and second hand Delano pickup brings it into the range of a decent used American Sterling which will always have better future values than mine but at least I have finally got the sound in my head.
9. The summers been good for me this year (other than the rather stupid broken arm incident) played a few decent festivals and a few nice pubs, problem is our singer has been seconded to Japan for 3 months from the start of September so that's it for the rest of the year other than possibly a couple of slots with Yodaclub (the originals band) I will never have had so much time on my hands
10. Still my favourite basses but as I don't play them as often as I should (can't really gig with them in a punk / indie covers band can I) I am not as accurate as I once was
11. Hi Ray, I use a really small Rell subwoofer on my system, it is amazing how little you actually need to fill the sound out, properly set up you would not even be able to actually hear it, the sound would just be full, incorrectly set up.......yep you will take the plaster off downstairs ceiling On a serious note I did check with our neighbours if they could hear the bass (it is set up in a corner with one wall being the shared wall) they said they couldn't hear it over my bass playing.....I love my neighbours!
12. I have a local luthier who put a far more shallow angle headstock snap back on a Gretsch Duo jet for me a couple of years back, it is still solid as ever and even stays perfectly in tune so I am sure he could do this one but the Duo Jet was a neck break not a headstock so I am not sure if that would change things at all
13. Looks like a pretty clean break and it has a nice gradient to the break so there is plenty to glue and attach to, is it worth a punt or is it a steer well clear job? I have to say I am tempted http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Overwater-C-Bass-Guitar-Restoration-Project-/231305467489?pt=UK_Guitar_Accessories&hash=item35dae15661
14. I had a Washburn AB5 up until recently, traded it for a Takamine bass, it was a cheap bass new, I got £100.00 as a trade in for it but it was a nice easy bass to play, it sounded decent and was well set up from new, for the money I couldn't fault it
15. I am afraid it is now collection only for the hoards of people with fingers poised to bid of this beauty at that price
16. It's quite funny reading this thread this morning, we played a festival yesterday evening and I remember looking out at one point, I actually found it quite weird to be looking out on a bunch of human bodies with strange looking boxes as faces some would flash from time to time others just had a little red light emitting from them. Yeah it is flattering that a lot of people were taking pictures and videos a lot of which will be on You Tube and Friend Face but I still find it strange. I can fully understand Mr Frampton's annoyance I too would have condoned the storing of said morons phone up his (as was so eloquently described earlier) chocolate star fish
17. Both are fantastic players, personally I go for Pino for his early work with Gary Numan and Paul Young still keeps me picking up a fretless bass 30 something years after those bass lines first blew me away, can I play them properly yet......nope but I keep trying. Maybe Sharay's bass work will inspire today's aspiring bassists for the next 30 years and onwards
18. Isn't that incredibly cheap for a German Streamer bass?
19. I wonder if the Warwick bass amp is for sale
20. I agree with much of the above, once I am going I just know what is coming next so I rarely make mistakes during the song, what still drives me potty is looking at the next song on the set list and thinking yeah that starts in C well G...no definitely C or is it G at which point muscle memory takes over and my fingers start the song in D where it has always been...doh!
21. I think the Bass Collection Jive basses had a good reputation, I have a feeling they were budget bass of the year in the Guitar and Bass magazine the other year, I have not played the newer Bass Collections but have owned a good number of the older Japanese ones they were all cracking basses
22. Aaaah singers, can't live with em, can't get away with accidentally plugging them into the mains......or could you
23. Is it definitely Candy Apple Red? I thought the matching headstock basses were in Hot Rod Red, maybe worth confirming as I brought one the other year that was advertised as Candy Apple Red but turned out to be Hot Rod Red when I turned up to collect it
24. That's lovely
25. Hi Dunc, Just to add I brought the bass from Wunjo Guitars in 2007 / 8 (from memory), it was sold to me as a 79 Precision and all parts are as they were when I brought the bass. I got the train down to London especially to pick it up! It's a great sounding bass and nice and easy to play, GLWTS
