  1. Look no further than Jon Shuker - right up his street. For a wildcard option though have a look at Doug Wilkes - daft as a brush but what a luthier he is!!!
  2. Imperious attention to detail, fit finish ... and Jon will invest as much time as you need in advising you (face to face or vicariously) how to achieve the sound that you have in your head. Brilliant builder, a gentleman and in my opinion he undercharges. Give him a call.
  3. Jon Shuker ... British and brilliant.
  4. Ouch! I think this kind of written interaction does tend to suffer in that it can be easy to misconstrue the meaning of the intended communication. I posted the reply in a rush (multi-tasking badly) ... but on review I can see your point. It does appear a tad 'in your face!' Sincere apologies for this, it was not at all in the spirit in which it was intended at all ... As an owner of a 2nd hand Shuker bass I have dealt with Jon directly for similar advice and he was exceptionally kind and helpful. Jon's attitude is that if you own a Shuker bass then he will always offer you his time and expertise! I would thoroughly recommend any Shuker owner (2nd hand or otherwise) to touch base with him for a natter or advice. He is an absolute gent. I sincerely hope your new pup sorts the noise issue.
  5. Is there any reason why you never sought the counsel of Jon Shuker on this matter (given that it's one of his creations)? He is exceptionally knowledgeable.
  6. Agree with this completely. The Sire V7 is imo a step up from both the Squier and the mim. Have you checked out the new 2018 G&L JB tributes? They look very tasty at a good price point.
  7. For me 5 works great because we tend to transpose many of our songs to suit our vocal range. I can do so with impunity without ever losing the low end.
  8. If someone tries to hurt your feelings - and succeeds - then rush, run to the nearest bin ... and dump those hurt feelings! It's his problem ... leave it with him.
  9. Is the nut cut too low on those strings? That could result in a slight rattle on 1st fret.
  10. Be still my beating heart ... incredible, stunning bass. That is all.
  11. Classic ... a beauty from a vanished time when basses were basses.
  12. Owned two 4001's at separate times. Loved them both, very niche basses - and I found them to be a bit "one trick pony" soundwise - but, what a trick. If you want one then get it.
  13. Great post. For me "Masques" by Brand X is tops. Percy Jones playing is hugely expansive, influential and undoubtedly had a meaningful affect upon Mick Karns development. ... I wouldn't disagree with any of the other opinions offered thus far. Jaco was obviously a monster on "Heavy Weather" by Weather Report.
  14. No issues with mine ... and over the course of my ownership I have realised that it is my favourite jazz bass. That is inclusive of my 76 Fender and lakland Darryl Jones. I never expected that!
  15. The combination of a tight neck pocket and aligned three screw fixing is absolutely structurally sound.
  16. Oh dear. That is all.
  17. Sure V5 ... above and beyond all expectations. It' my 'go to' bass and my least expensive
  18. Ooooh, I lusted after the old handmade BC Rich's back in the day - seriously awesome instruments. I owned a NJ series Eagle during the late 80's and it was excellent. Congrats, this looks like a great buy (...as he slips away to begin an internet search for an Eagle)
  19. W O W ... Yew is as rare as rocking horse s@#t Stunner
  20. Oh yes ... know this phenomenon all too well. Despite having owned some highly expensive boutique basses in my time I can't help but feel they are a bit 'Emperors new clothes'
  21. The tuner gearing seems to me to be absolutely fine - I read somewhere that the latest Sire's tuners have been upgraded from the originals? The stock bridge also seems to be reasonably good. I've always upgraded the bridge on my Fenders - but I just don't see the point in this instance. It sounds great, plays really well and looks the part.
