Al murray best on the night for me worst lenny henry,he stopped being funny years ago! now to the music, lily sounded better than i thought she would, annies got a great voice but awful song choice for the occasion.ting tings would be better off as a proper 4 piece band imo.shes got a great voice also.kelly jones probably had the best male voice on the night.i didnt get the hold steadys whatsoever.their second song sounded like something ive heard before but cant think what it is.ol dave edmonds can still rock with the best of them, martha and the other ol geezer who sang L.O.V.E sadly not.summing up bit dissapointing too many girly singers not enough bands.

your budget will give you loads of choice secondhand,on here or flea bay.if you want to buy new i would have thought ashdowns mag series might be one of the sounds you are looking for, well inside your budget if you go for a 300w combo.you could then add an extension cab later if need be.wish i had that budget ive got gas
Apart from the difference in cab building materials, what else is different beteween MAG and ABM cabs? Cheers Matt
apart from the cost ? nothing i dont think, dont now if the mag 2x10 cab has a switchable horn like the abm cab though.should have looked on their website first!mag gear is great value for money IMO,but not on par with the abm range which you would expect considering the price difference.

i had a new bb614 which i thought was worth the money, nice slim neck, well made and with a nice finish,on the downside it ate the batteries and one of the pups packed up after 6months!must have been a friday afternoon one i reckon!
-
personally i wouldnt mix mag gear with the abm range, but try a abm cab with your mag combo if thats what you want yours ears will probably decide your decision at the end of the day, bear in mind that prices have gone up on gear so depending on your budget you might have to go for the mag cab.not many secondhand abm cabs around at the moment, although there is a abm 2x10 for sale on here.dont forget to haggle with pmt over your purchase, they are all hungry for sales at the moment.
Hey up !! Just bought a Squire Classic vibe 60's Jazz (the white one) I've got to say i'm blown away for a instrument that I got for £239 ! I've owned many Fenders, a number of Custom shops (including a 66 Mark Kendrick Masterbuild) and this piece of Chinese Basswood is AMAZING !!! The neck feels every bit as good as any Jazz at any price of any vintage i've ever played, the fit & finish is virtually flawless, the fretwork is faultless. Took it to a gig last night and used it for a couple of songs....... hit the spot !!!!! Tonally it's big and growly with loads of weight and thump, I've set it up with 45 - 105 DR Fatbeams and it plays as well as anything i've owned (the change of strings made a hell of a difference in fairness) (Sadowsky's Fodera's, Alembics, you name it) No i've not had too much Christmas Spirit........ it's just an unbelievable bass at a stupid price ! Can't wait to put it into the hands of some of my Bass player mates..... they'll not believe it I'll most likely end up swapping the Pickups and wiring..... simply because I have to believe that in producing an instrument of this quality at a price of £239 compromises must have been made in this area...... Regards Mark
do they come with a nice new hardcase as well?tempted to get one tomorrow!

i bought my mia fender j bass on the name alone if i was honest ,thinking 'its got to be the dogs b######s'!it is nice to play and well made but overall not £550 better than a squier cv!
-
vintage and rare?vintage its not as musky has already said.might be rare as newer ones are now 300w i think.at £350 you can buy new for that, think theyre having a laugh!
-
i tryed both the 50's and 60's cv p basses and was very impressed, especially the 60's one.i also found on the 50's one the pup wasnt as good but still sounded sweet.i tryed the 60's p-bass against a mim fender p and the highway one, highway sounded slightly better but was £300 more.the squier was a lot better than the mim p-bass and about £100 cheaper.so i would reccomend one of these cv's to anyone, infact im thinking of buying the 60's p-bass to replace my mia fender jazz!
-
what about a ashdown electric blue combo,180 watts with 1x15 driver.couple on flea bay at the moment.will be good vfm in my opinion.
-
dont think you will ever beat their service, they have been very helpful to me in the past.cant say that about some of their competitors(no names mentioned)!
-
you will need 300w at least imo.best thing is to go to a store and try as many as you can as you will get an idea of the sound youre after.but what you do hear instore will probably sound different at a gig so bear that in mind.buying new isnt always the best option though, there is a lot of very good secondhand gear you could buy on your budget and get more watts per pound as well!im sure their will be some great deals about in the new year so good luck.
-
i have a jazz with s-1 switching and when used with just the neck pup it does beef the sound a bit but nothing like a precision would,so if you are really after the precision sound imo you will have to buy one.
-
i tryed a classic vibe out the other week and was very impressed with it,although it was the 60's p-bass model.value for money......yes indeeeedee!
-
i would stay clear of the behringer cab as well.lots more to choose from secondhand like ashdown, trace elliot, peavey etc.imo you dont have to spend hundreds of pounds on a bass guitar.there are many what cost 2/300 quid that are as good as those that cost three times that.if i had tryed a classic vibe 6o's pbass before i bought my fender j bass i would have saved myself over £500!but thats just my opinion!
-
were they any good?didnt seem to last long as a company or were they bought out?must be worth a few bob surely!
Most of us don't!! Hi Rob, you are on the right track. Audition a 2x10 extension cabinet or, if you prefer the sound, a 1x15. If it sounds good then it is good. I assume that your combo is 8 ohm and the amp can go to 4 ohm, so don't worry about any technical "stuff" people throw at you, there are only two things you need to look out for, the extension cab must be 8 ohm (8 ohm + 8 ohm = 4 ohm) and that the sound works for you. Good luck.
that is the reply i was hoping you would get!
Some sound advice there - thanks all. Ok, I'll forget the Frankenstein idea and look for something suitable. As per post #7 above this ad in the for sale section is tempting - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=33719 ...if rather over budget and half way up the country, too. Is it good or bad form to ask opinions as to value for money that this represents? BTW SP love your 'caveat' - not heard that before. I know, what bubble do I live in!?
look up the new price on those,VFM in my opinion.!lots of s/hand gear about at the moment so have a good look around.
-
i would suggest the ashdown mag 2x10 cab to go with your combo.always some about on fleabay.then when you have enough cash buy a mag 300 head + 1x15 mag cab.both cabs are 8ohm so using them together with a head the load would be 4ohm thus getting max power from your amp.two 8ohm cabs =4ohm which is what most amps are today.if you only used one 8ohm cab with a 300w head you would get roughly half the power.your combo with extension cab will also produce max power.you will hopefully get a clearer reply than this one!

having read a few posts on here about strings no one barely mentions fender strings is it cos they are not very good?am looking to replace my rotosound swing bass set but no idea what to buy.play a fender j bass but want more of a presicion sound.(just use neck pup)tryed a squire classic vibe a few weeks ago and the strings on that felt soft and sounded good, would they have been fender?need strings to be smoother than my rotosounds which imo are rough.cheers.
+1 Chris! The latest Squiers are in some cases better than the Fenders. Have you ever heard anyone going on about a bad vintage modified 70's jazz? Didn't think so! The current classic vibe range are excellent as well, by all accounts! Rich.
+1 i tryed the vibe 60's p bass and was very impressed.
Ok so I bought a set of Roto Sound swing bass strings the other day and put them on just now. However these strings feel really quite rough I notice they stick to my hands more when I slide up/down the strings. I think it might just be a duff pack but is there anything I could put on them to make them feel more "slippery"
i have the same problem with my rotosound strings, very hard on the fingers.not used anything on them as i think i will change strings soon anyway.thought it was just me!
Not usually, but I suppose some manufacturers might reserve serial numbers for just one model. It's more usual for serial numbers to be applied to various models across a brand. It's easier to use the serial to tell you what it's not rather than what it is - if something has a 5 digit number it doesn't necessarily make it a pre CBS Fender, whereas an E+ 6 digits will tell you that it's not pre CBS. If you've got any pictures why don't you stick them up?
should have posted this under bass guitars!sorry!no pictures unfortunately.
