Tribute Bands - do you play in one? Just for fun
police squad replied to Mickeyboro's topic in General Discussion
I did 2 different Police tributes. One just played in local pubs, the other did bigger gigs. Do you have to be a fan of the original artist, or maybe you become one? I am a fan of the Police, so it was easy for me. Both bands I was in, were also big fans How important is it to be visually/musically identical? How much latitude are you allowed? I look a lot like Sting, even when not on stage and as he is the focus it worked well. I spent quite a lot of money on the correct basses and the matching outfits Do you ‘get into character’ or is it just a gig? I spent a lot of time watching Sting live and copying his moves but I don't speak like him Does it feel musically limiting, or is it fulfilling your needs? (Maybe you have a side band?) Try singing and playing some of those songs. Driven to tears is the hardest playing/singing at the same time song I've done Do you have any qualms about tributes ‘stifling original music’? Absolutely not. Why would it Have you ever met or been seen by a member of the ‘originals’? What did they say? No, but I tweeted a video to Stewart Copeland and he commented on 'you got the sound right but I pity the poor B'stard in the cute shorts' What is the overriding thing being in a tribute act has taught you? Nothing I didn't already know. You can't please everyone all the time. I always put 100% effort into every gig, big or small Having done it once, would you do it again? If so, would the musical angle be very different? I would yes but not The Police now. My knees hurt and a bad shoulder means I can't jump up and down and so it's not authentic enough now anyway here's a few pictures of the gear etc -
yes, side dots present and correct

I have a northwest 'jazz neck' on a self build P bass. Very good quality and highly recommended. Mine has the vintage yellow tint.

There's a couple of Costello's songs in this set she is learning. Nice player Bruce too. I dont play much bass these days but will learn the songs with her, it should be fun

My wife is off to try out (on the bass) a new band next week. She's already got the set list and Pump it up is on it. What great bass playing on this song, I'm sitting in my office trying to learn it (I keep a Precision Lyte in my office) She's going to really enjoy playing this one. She's not gigged for nearly 6 years now

£1200 should get you a cracker. I haven't played many modern USA examples so can't comment on them but I have played a fair few Japan models, all of which were excellent. I bought my wife a Jap PB70US in olympic white, nearly 15 years ago. It is a lovely bass here's a gratuitous picture for you (paid £350 for it)

When I first DI d my PF500 the guy on the desk said it was a very hot signal. I've had no problem with mine at all. Just turn the gain down on the desk and all is/was fine (I dont use my PF500 as my main now, it's just a spare)

Bloody hell, I haven’t bought a bass for over a year now…….

I think I sold 4 recently, don't think I've bought a bass since my JMJ Mustang in June 2021. This is POOR FORM 🤣 -
yep I have 4 Vintage 6 strings. An SG, JD telecaster, 335 a-like and an old Geoff Whitehorn signature. They are all very good instruments, particularly the Jerry Donahue telecaster. My older brother had a Vintage P bass. It was giggable straight out of the box. Great hardware and pickups too

Yep, I've seen the SharpeeZ but not for a good few years. I'll keep my eyes peeled
-
isn't he just. Who do you play with, with Clive?
-
got my first p bass 6/7 years after i started playing. I was already gigging 3-4 nights a week in a pub band. It changed my world. My main one now is a '73. Had it 32 years. It works for me JMJ mustang is also awesome. Same neck profile too, but shorter and easier as the arthritis in my shoulders kicks in.

I saw a band last night, had Clive Edwards on drums. He played in UFO for a few years. My favourite drummer at the moment. Such feel and groove (Rhino was on bass too, it was marvellous) Also saw Pete Way's band a few years ago. Clive on drums again and Lawrence Archer on guitar, another excellent evening

I bought this, in a trade, just before lockdown 1 (about then) and had it in the lounge. I moved last december and it hasnt been out of its case since. Lovely thing, almost mint and light too
