Just wanted to add that I never really got flats (despite having experimented with a few different sets) until I played a mates vintage P bass with some La Bellas on - Total game changer. I immediately got some 2nd hand 760M's from here and after a bit tweaking the setup of my bass they settled nicely and sound/feel great. They needed to 'break in' a bit though. I've just bought a set of 760FS for my Jazz bass and they are great straight put of the packet. Very even across the strings, not 'sticky' as flats sometimes feel and full of lovely thump tone. So, my vote goes for La Bella's - 760M for a P and 760FS on a Jazz. Oh, and 760QM quarter rounds for my Tele Bass.

I'm sure I had a Trace Elliot once that was close to 120kg, that was only a 4x10!

It all depends how much you like to dig into the strings with your plucking hand. Martin at the Gallery tends to try to get it as low as possible as he mainly deals with / builds very high end basses that can handle this without excess buzz. As mainly a Fender player I prefer a medium action as I like to dig in a bit. But to answer your question generally a lower action equals more playability.

Si, have you tried a Pearl OC7? or the Foxrox Octron? Both these analogue octave ups have intrinsic distortion to create the upper octave.

As suggested above - if it is a Wick I would get a full refund. The truss rods can be problematic (depending on which year your bass was built) I had trouble with the key not catching on a Wick once and it turned out the threaded part of the rod was pushing the key out so it wouldn't catch. This could be due to underlying neck issues.
