1. Gig's tonight, here's a video for anyone wondering who I'm talking about: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=RgbKKZWZuQo&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DRgbKKZWZuQo
2.
We were using the other band's drums, they hadn't put a reinforcement pad on the bass drum head, two songs in our drummer put the beater through it, so that was it for our set. According to the other band the head was torn already. So why didn't they replace it when they decided everybody was using their drums? Blank stares.
We had the same thing happen in Staines a couple of years ago, ended up repairing the drum head with a cardboard drinks menu, made the kick drum sound triggered which wasn't such a terrible thing for a metal gig I suppose; killed the momentum of the gig though.
3. I appreciate this is probably the wrong forum for this, but as the gig's tomorrow night I thought it best to put it where the most people could see it. Last week I won two tickets to see Stooshe at The Scala in King's Cross but the wife and I can't go; I can't find anyone who a) wants to go and is free, so I thought one of you guys might be interested? Stooshe will have a full band with them (the main reason I entered the competition in the first place) and support comes from Titch and Plastic; doors at 19:30. I have the confirmation on e-mail so can forward it over if someone wants them. Graham
4.
Or Electric Bass Sweden...
That's what I always assumed it was, or at least that in Swedish
5. I used to have a playlist for playing bass to on my old computer of my favourite song to play along with, trying to remember what was on it: Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me This Way Steve Wonder - Sir Duke Beyonce - De Ja Vu Led Zeplin - Dazed And Confused Pink Floyd - Pigs, 3 Different Ones Foo Fighters - Long Road To Ruin Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls Were all on there, but if I had to pick one it'd probably be Everyone Needs Someone To Love by The Blues Bothers - I love the walking part at the end
6. And on we go
7. Considering you're getting fresh strings and a set-up in there, that strikes me as a remarkable bargain
8. Post-rock and post-hardcore both tend to have a lot of elements of rock and hardcore but also have a lot of ambient and progressive elements - Cave In, Isis and Devil Sold His Soul are the first bands that jump to mind in those genres, though there are probably better examples - so maybe jazz structures with some progressive rock / fusion elements and string players in this case? As has been said above "post-" is a fairly meaningless and broad term that can apply to more or less anything.
9.
Mine keeps the series-parallel and the pickup switch, of course. Just not passive-active one... I could,, there is room for it, but I´m ok without it.
hmmm.......I could always swap the 3-way pre-amp switch for a 2-way and make it a simple active / pre-amp bypass.....just been looking at the East MM circuits on bass direct, very tempting; particularly as the 3 knob version has a push - pull treble boost - like the 3rd position on the L2000 pre-amp switch. I wonder if on of the electrical engineers at work could rig a slight mod to keep the tone controls working in passive mode. This is all Pie in the sky in all honesty though as I'm broke at the moment.
10. I love my Tribute L2000 but do agree it could do with a pre-amp upgrade, I keep hoping John East will bring out an L-Retro.... I'd want to keep the master volume / pickup switch, the series / parallel switch and a active passive switch. Swapping out the tone controls and making the active and treble boost better would be good though - these are all features I'd want to keep, but just improved versions of them as the active mode is just a line boost as far as I can tell and the toe controls are quite subtle.
11. Is it a J profile on the tribute then? A mate of mine had the USA version and said it made his Jazz feel like a pencil.
12. Dammit Karl, stop selling gorgeous Precisions I can't afford
13.
Gilmour played all the bass on Animals, apart from some of Sheep.
Ah, that'd explain it then
14. Pigs, Three Different Ones by Pink Floyd; I never really rated Roger Waters as a bassist - great song writer but nothing special on bass - but this track is a wonderful baseline to play
15. Do you already stock G&L? I reckon a lot more people would play these if they were more widely available to try
16. I've recently traded my old EBS Fafner and Proline 4x10 for a Genz Streamliner 900 and a Barefaced Compact, I was very trepidatious about changing my amp as I loved the tone the Fafner produced and I'd had it long enough that I could get my tone very quickly from it in most situations. Also, it was the first "pro" rig I'd bought after upgrading from a Hartke model 1000 head and Pro 4200 cab; so some emotional attachment there too. However, I've recently moved house and just don't have have the space for a 4x10 and rack mount head so I've gone down the micro / light-weigh route. I'd played through the head mostly on headphones at home and really liked the sound, but after a couple of minutes through the cab there was a crying baby, so to get it up to gig volume, I took the it up to my local jam nigh / open mic last night and it turns out my worries were un-founded - what a tone! Deep, punchy, articulate everything I want in a bass tone, if anything there was too much bottom end and I ended up cutting the bass and boosting the mids in the highest (2.5K? I forget) setting but the sound was fantastic. Taking it to the jam night was a good move too as I could stand out front and hear other people playing through it and I'm really happy with it. And to make matters better, I could carry the head, cab, bass in a hardcase and hardcase with all my pedals, leads etc in one trip from the car. Colour me chuffed.
17. If weight and size aren't an issue the Hartke Pro 4200 is a lot of cab for the money; it is a beast though.
18. Before the project got de-railed by my housemove, the custom Precision Jon Shuker was going to build for me was going to have a Bareknuckle P/J set, he spoke very highly of them saying they were some of the closest copies of the vintage pickups he'd heard.
19. I normally enjoy playing Mustang Sally as the punters love it and in a covers band situation I'd rather play something simple and classic that has people up and dancing than something technical, like Hysteria for instance, that empties the dance floor.
20.
mark tremonti uses some interesting ones for his guitar which work with drop tuned bass. i think he tunes his guitar something like CGCGCC (i could be wrong check it out on google)..... i copied it once and christ it didn't half make for an epic guitar sound
I think Devin Townsend does that - makes the open strings one massive power chord. I remember reading Byron Stroud who play bass for him saying it made life interesting sometimes for the bass
21.
Here's my bass + rig. All from early 1952, the original 'bass rig'. 1952 Fender Precision, original plastileather bag and strap. 1952 Fender TV Bassman, 1x15, tweed.
My goodness Though I'm guessing you get that a lot
22. Not great, had to punch through rush-hour, central London traffic from East Grinstead up to Charring Cross for a private function so got there a bit late; fortunately it didn't take too long to un-load and set-up in a room above a pub, I was very thankful I was using my new BF Compact last night - so much lighter than my old EBS. However the line-up last night wasn't the band's A team, I'm the dep bassist, but know the material well and can pass for the main player, the regular bassist had moved to guitar for the night as their regular guitarist is having some "issues"; the drummer is their main dep, but he's not played loads with the band and still doesn't know all the material / arrangements. So we dind't play amazingly and working the set-list around what the drummer and guitarist knew was a bit tricky; also the guitarist had changed his strings and kept going out of tune, so I really was carrying the band a few times. The gig was a private function - a fairly small retirement party for a policeman and all the punters seemed to be polis, mostly all really nice except one hammered bird who kept trying to speak to the singer during the set because she'd seen us a few times before and wanted us to "play it more upbeat" and "play what we normally play" - we were playing the regular set-list....... She then hassled him on the break and he was close to walking away from the whole thing, having been up since 6 and doing a driving job all day before driving up to London for this. To add to the fun, the pub management kept coming over and asking us to turn down, I'm not convinced anyone but me could hear the bass, which is a shame as this was most likely my last gig with my Fafner head before I trade it with Shep for his Streamliner and was looking forward to giving it a good send-off. All that said though, we were (strangely) really well recived and got a lot of compliments from happy punters, I think the liberal amount of drink being consumed helped with that a fair bit - good money too.
23. Double post
24. I think they did a newer one with a reverse P pickup, I'd be interested in trying that.
25. Played at a fireworks event this evening as a last minute dep gig - got the call 75 minutes before I had to be on stage. Whoever thought an outside gig in November was a good idea was wrong.
