1.
+1 on this; an acoustic bass unamplified will easily be drowned out by a strummed guitar, let alone anything else. Sorry, Graham, but I can't let that stand. I've heard this said a thousand times, and it never fails to amaze me that on a forum that obsesses about every detail of our kit, ostensibly on the grounds of nuances in sound, people will rush to dismiss an acoustic bass because it needs to be amplified, and say that you may as well play a P. So let's just spell it out: an acoustic bass, amplified, sounds a lot more like an acoustic bass unamplified (just louder) than a solid body does. And some of us like that sound quite a lot, which is why we (sometimes) play acoustic basses. And I've said nothing about the looks, because, of course, we all choose our kit on the basis of sound, not on looks, don't we. (/sarcasm). Sorry, I just love my acoustic bass, and the interested comments it ALWAYS gets.
No worries mate, I'm sure I'd be the same about my kit, and to be honest I've only mucked about with an AB once or twice and never in a live mix :-)
  2. I think un-amplified your not going to be very audible up against guitars, mandolins, fiddles etc. And if you are going to be amplified, you might as well just use a P bass with flats which should fit in nicely.
  3. I went to see Decapitated in Brighton a couple of nights ago, who were great - really, really tight and had cracking set-list. However, they had Xerath in support, last time I saw these guys their bassist was rocking a 6-string Ibabez (?) but this time had a Dingwall 5 - a Super Jazz I think with a maple feetboard - and it sounded fantastic, when I could hear it, the mix wasn't great. However, when I could hear it, it sounded tight, deep and authoritative, just great. Now, I say an annoying case of GAS as I have no chance of getting one, but I've been drooling over the Dingwall page on the Bass Direct site the last couple of days from the daft money Prima Artists to the more affordable ABZ - which I think would quite suit me. Is GAS shared GAS halved?
  4. I've only skim read this thread so someone may have said the same thing, but if I'm being paid I'll play whatever the person paying me wants - cheesy pop, root / 5th country, whatever. Also, I have noticed songs I wouldn't normally listen to are much more fun when you're playing them.
  5. I do that on a G&L L2000 and it seems to work well, you might be able to get one with that budget.
  6. Bump I did a bit of research yesterday and the cheapest I could find a new Fafner (II) for was over £1700.00 and a Proline 4x10 was over £900.00, so a good way of saving some pennies if you're after some good EBS gear

  8.
Probably bought it with the money he received from Sharon Osbourne in exchange for his artistic integrity following his shamefull agreement to re record Bob Daisley's bass parts on the sham re release of Blizzard of Ozz/ Diary of a Madman.
That was pretty shameful, (not to mention it sounded awful compared to the original) but I blame Sharon for that rather than Rob and the others as to them it was a pay-cheque to a working musician.
  9.
Things I KNOW I WANT in a bass.

Cutting Tone/distinct growl
34" scale
Slightly oddball, but not too much!
Generally like Maple or ebony fingerboards
I like predominantly all maple basses
Really low EFFORTLESS/Lazy action

Shame you don't like Warwicks as I'd have thought a Streamer Stage 1 would tick those boxes.
  10. I used to have the stereo version of this, a lot of bang for your buck here
  11. Steve Harris uses flats, which TBH, surprised me.
  12. Has anyone tried these two cabs? Been looking at the Bass Direct website and thought the Neox might be a good alternative to a Super 12 and would probably work out cheaper - any thoughts?
  13. Bump for the weekend, also price dropped to £1350 for the whole rig

Like Shockwave's green Pedulla, I would never buy it, but I'm very glad it exists.
  15.
He has a really cool Fender Deluxe Precision with a custom shop silverburst finish. I've seen him use that live. Like it a lot
Yeah, I like that too - wouldn't be surprised to see a MIM signature version out within the next couple of years.
  16. If it's the natural finish with the two racing stripes that looks like an Ibanez, it is indeed a Fender Prophecy II - I can't see the video at work. Off the top of my head, he's also played Fender Deluxe Precisions, a Godlyke Diety, a couple of Yamahas of some description - 1 with humbuckers, and a PJ, a Michael Kelly acoustic and an Ibanez SRX amongst others. I vaguely remember seing a Wal in his collection too, but never seen pictures of him playing it.
  17.
Is it my imagination but didn't you used to have EBS gear Tony? Why not go back to a Proline 410 or a Neo 410? I've just returned to a single EBS Proline 410 after a couple of years away and to be honest, I couldn't be happier at the moment. I know it's as heavy as a heavy thing with an elephant sitting on top but maaaannnn, it's fantastic having that presence and volume again. A set of detatchable castors on the bottom has all but sorted the weight concerns I had. Alternatively, I'd +1 on the Ampeg 410HLF. Had one of these and it was a fantastic single solution, a real massive sound and looked the part. Big and heavy but the grab handle and tilt back castors made it easy to move around. Tony
In a shameless plug, I have a Proline 4x10 for sale....
  18. And these, if you want any more from any other angles, let me know Here's the damage to the rack case
  19. Up we go, house move got in the way of taking proper photies, but will get some up as soon as I can. If you were looking for just the head or the cab I was after £900 for the head and £500 for the cab, though feel free to make me an offer on either.
  20. One of these: http://www.merrychef.com/products/cook-ovens/microwave/electric/merrychef-hd1425-1725-1925
  21. I don't think it would've been product placement in this case as they only sell to the commercial market and it had been stripped of any badges or anything, I only recognised it because of it's pop-up door.
  22.
Frank, you need to get out more. Trust me!
It's a bit like when I was really chuffed to see an oven made by the company I used to work for (literally) pop up in the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who, I think my wife's reaction was the same as yours.
