Just a random thought.. I've had a couple of Stingrays (one from 1986, the other a 2003) and both were fantastic. No quiet G. Was surprised to hear eventually that this was 'a thing'. Another 'thing' I hear is that Fenders usually have dead spots thing. I've owned many Fenders over the years (and other brands) and have never experienced dead spots on any of my basses. Either I've spent the last 30 years being incredibly lucky or I'm just completely ignorant to such things! I hope I'm lucky 🤔😄 Right, as you were...

Just completed the sale of my Fender Japan Jazz Bass Special to Ben and was surprised to discover he didn't have a feedback thread yet so here it is! Ben's a great guy and we had a good chat over the PMs and finally WhatsApp. He paid for the bass right away and we checked in with each other until he received the bass today. Dead easy friendly deal. Ben's an ace BCer and I would happily buy or sell again with him. Cheers Ben! 👍

Stingray pickup - at the correct spot, passive... definitely Stingray
miles'tone replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
If anyone is putting a MM pickup in a Fender style bass and measuring up by using a Stingray pickguard, remember that a Stingray has 21 frets. If you put it's pickguard up against the neck heel on a 20 fret neck the pickup will not be in the MM sweet spot. 😉 -
Bloody good point regarding the Ol' Smoothie pup! 👏

*SOLD* Fender Japan Jazz Bass Special PJ-555

Up for sale is my Fender Japan Jazz Bass Special which I actually imported from Japan myself as I couldn't find one here! It's one of the coveted first run E series (1984-1987) with the all black neck and Hot Rod larger pole PJ pickups which sound amazing! It's a low number E series so I think it's possibly a 1985. It is all original, even down to the pots and switches and even has all 3 of it's original 'F' knobs present and complete (they are pretty much impossible to find and are pricey when they do show up) I suppose I have to mention the ubiquitous Duff McKagan of Guns and Roses connection - he used exactly the same bass throughout the GnR years... Which I knew nothing about until I started shopping for one! I was initially inspired to get one because Zia Geelani of Ozric Tentacles played one to GREAT effect. It really is a fabulous bass, the neck is Jazz width at the nut (which is graphite) and super solid and straight, the nicest Fender neck I've played, and the truss rod works perfectly with plenty of adjustment in either direction. The electronics are Volume/volume/TBX tone control (goes brighter and also deeper than a normal passive tone - every bit of it usable) and also a pickup selector switch which between them all adds up to incredible versatility for a passive bass. It's pretty lightweight weighing in at 8.7lbs and balances perfectly. It does have some dinks and bumps here and there and has been touched up near the input jack where it looks like it was dropped at some point in it's life. Purely cosmetic as it doesn't affect the playability in any way - Genuine road worn mojo! It is a 35 year old bass after all. Currently set up with a nice low action with a set of virtually new DR Hi Beams 100-40. Another nice touch is the head stock decal, which in fact isn't really a decal.. They were actually silk-screen printed on then lacquered over! Quality. The whole bass is pure class and feels it. I will miss it dearly and already plan to get another when my finances pick up again. I'm just looking to get back what it cost me which is £680. I will post it safely if required at the buyers expense. Thanks for looking.

A - the Sterling Sub Stingray is active and has a neck profile and nut width like a Jazz B - HB is passive and has a chunky neck and nut width like a Precision. (HB do a double pickup active version that has 24 frets but it all looks a bit schronky (my new word 😄) to me.) Sterling if you can afford it but HB not to be sniffed at if not.

Funky idea!

This is what I'm going to do now thanks. I'm going to sell the Jazz Bass Special PJ-555 and keep the '62 P. It really is a tough call though. I'll stick it up on here next weekend when I'm back from camping. Meanwhile I'll potter with the Bitsa and see how that turns out and decide which P to keep then. Sounds like good fun. Good, heartbreaking fun. 🤪 Thanks for the advice mate, I was really stumped last night to be fair. 👍

Cool, well played sir!

Can I ask, where did you find the neck? New or second hand?

That's the rarest colour you have there, keep it as is! Battle scars are cool 🤘

Good work!! They look fantastic! 👍

Yes I remember following your neck story as it unfolded. Mmm.... Status graphite... Now there's a thought! Good luck yourself with the new build.

Thanks for the input guys. Where I'm at is that I have 2 amazing mid 80s Fender Japan basses but with no income, gigs or even a band now, I'm looking at selling them unfortunately. What I do have is enough P parts knocking around to make my own (only need a neck, pickup and wiring loom - KiOgan obvs 😉) I'd have to sell before I could buy anything though. Really umming and ahhing about it all though. I'm looking at only playing at home for the foreseeable.. I dunno. Strange times.

Just feeling the Bitsa bug creeping up on me again. I've tried in the past but found I've usually aborted mission before completion due to lack of time/interest. Well time is something I have presently so I'm just wondering how those bitsas you've put together measure up against the bought ones available (P bass in this case) Worth the money, time etc? Have they become keepers? Regretted not spending the money on an off the shelf bass in the end? Do tell... Go!

Great stuff! 😄 Funny, good presentation and visuals, no filler and just the right length. Well done! I prefer the Dunlops myself. I like the natural crunch they have over the others, although overall I thought the Ernie Balls had the edge on the chordal playing. Just. Interestingly, from your demo here, I mostly liked the Rotos more than the Ernie Balls whereas in 'real life' It's the opposite for me. 🤔 -

F# is the stand out key out for me. It's the note my ears ring in. I can actually tune my bass off it's drone in a quiet room. -
