Don't fool yourself into thinking that building cabs will save you money. It won't in the long run. I've been there. Better buying something second hand, then at least it has a resale value!

Yes you're right, you'd need an extension cab for the full output. I'm very tempted by the shuttle myself, but not just at the minute. Spent quite enough in the past year thanks very much!

You're getting close to Markbass combo territory with your budget, but probably ever so slightly shy. I'm ashdown to the core (a bit like a stick of rock - if you cut me in 2 you could read the letters ABM!) but I would never buy a Little Giant... not with the reviews they're getting and no valve in the preamp.

My tip would be to aim for a pre '00 warwick. I have a '93 'Vette and it's the best Warwick I've ever heard (by a long way!). Mine's a bolt-on with a wenge neck and bubinga body. I've played a lot of W's over the years (Stremer Stage I's were my dream basses when I started playing). I haven't played a $$, but have yet to play a post '00 Warwick that compares to mine. I had my Shuker 6 based on my 'Vette as recent W's just aren't my thing.

I had one of those Jacksons on loan from a mate years ago. Great rock bass, but much more versatile than just that. Don't let the rock'n'roll breading put you off folks, it's a pretty serious bass all round. -

I chose Jon Shuker for my custom bass for a variety of reasons. 1). I've NEVER heard anything negative said about Jon's workmanship. 2). I'd played a few of his basses in the past and really liked every one of them. 3). When I emailed him for a quote he asked me all the right questions about what I wanted to achieve. 4). Price. Has to come into it somewhere along the way, for me at least! Having been through the experience once, I have to say I'd go back to Jon again in a heartbeat. Sure Jon took nearly twice as long as his initial estimated build time (really my only criticism of him to be honest), but even then it was still half of what you'd be talking about from Martin @ Sei/The Gallery. I also had a great experience talking to Alan at ACG, although his designs didn't really fit what I had in mind at the time. Rob at RIM wasn't long started so I discounted him, but he does seem to be doing excellent work and I really like the look of the basses he's producing now. I've spoken to Martin @ The Gallery in the past and played more of his basses than any other custom builder. I have to say half the Sei basses I've played were excellent, but the other half didn't leave me with a fuzzy feeling. To an extent this is understandable since they are the product of someone elses vision/requirements, which just didn't line up with what I would look for in a bass. I'm not knocking Martin and his team here. They do excellent work and Martin's one of the nicest chaps you're ever likely to meet. I have to admit that I didn't even consider Bernie Goodfellow. Not sure why. I've spoken to him before and he was great craic! Didn't consider Overwater either - I have to say I've never played one I really enjoyed. All IMHO and YMMV, etc.

Since there's nothing structurally or electrically wrong with the bass I'd think somewhere around £500-600 quid would set it pretty close to 'as new'. And my DP Osborne does have a battery compartment on the back - but I've the East pre out of it and running it passive (control plate from a Geddy Lee on there at the minute).

Hi guys, As some of you probably remember I spent quite a bit of time looking for a Status towards the end of last year. I found this one languishing in the no-interest bin on Ebay and made the guy an offer offline. The bass has had a pretty hard life (at the hands of its previous owners might I add) but is structurally 100%. A picture tells a 1000 words as they say, so here we go. Most of the pics were from the guy I bought it off last year and the bass has been babied since. As well as the damage shown in the pics the bass has 3 non-matching strap buttons and some damage near the bottom bout (where an edge mounted jack socket is usually found) that's been repaired with some sort of black epoxy. The damage probably of most concern is the epoxy coating has been chipped off along the edge of the fretboard from frets 1 to 12 to varying degrees. It never bothered me, but I realise it would probably bother quite a few people. I've spoken to Rob at Status and he quoted about £300 to have the neck re-epoxied, fret dress, new strings and a setup. It sounds great and there's no moving the neck at all. But my love for my Lakland JO knows no bounds I'm afraid. I bought this bass as a gigging basher but can't leave my JO in its case so this has to go. I just have too many other basses. I'd be after £400 (firm) for the bass, not including postage which would probably be another £30 (since I'm in Northern Ireland and get raped frequently by couriers). I used to think it was a total waste of time myself. Listen to Pino for tips on how an octave divider should be used. Sure it seems useless until you pull some fancy fill and the bottom drops out of the whole band...

£180 with cabs? You want jam on that? Seriously, you'll maybe get a new combo for close to that money - Ashdown comes to mind immediately. They do a 1x12" 180 watt combo for about £220. Buying used you have much more choice. Recently there's been quite a few combos for sale around the 200 quid mark, usually Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Peavey.

Black with Bart NTMB active circuit (including mid-shift switch like the 55-02). As I say I haven't really decided if I want to part with it, but stick up some pics of the RH and I'll give it some more thought. Cheers Ian
