1. Replaced the strings on my main gigging bass last night so I'm probably sorted until the summer...
2. So it was neither Gunnarson nor Watson on Voulez Vous then...
3. You have to also consider which age demographic has the most disposable income to go see bands - the ones with young to teenage kids who have nothing but bills and mortgages and spend a lot of time not in work with their growing families or th eolder ones whose kids have grown up and buggered off and have also paid off their mortgages. Some of the best responses of an audience I saw/heard to either live or prerecorded music over the holidays was to the early 70's glam stuff that was in the chart when even i was in short pants. Go figure.
4. IME January is always a quiet month anyway, some bands don't really want to play much before end of Jan as there isn't much money around till people get paid end of Jan which often means very poor audiences.
5. I have the Clouds 3 album set 'Up Above Our Heads', well worth a listen.
6. Decent gig at the Queens Hall in Nuneaten. We would have probably been better off gigging downstairs in The Crew as originally intended but the agent thought he knew best and put us on upstairs instead. Nice to have the luxury of the bigger stage and although up stairs with all the people hanging around after it was an easier load out than it would have been trying to get through the milling numbers downstairs. Those that came up to see us seemed to enjoy it, agent sounded happy and we got paid. Thought we put in a decent performance too, last one until back end of Jan so I have a bit of a rest coming up.
7.
Over here Blue they definitely were ...all screaming girls drowning out "music" that you may have wanted to hear. But then all the sixties stars were teen idols......only teenagers bought that there new Rock and Roll music ....apparently
Looking at the footage of audiences in the USA on their first tour there I'd say they were teen idols there too tbh. Finally got round to seeing Ron Howard's film yesterday which reminded me all over again. Sigourney Weaver in the audience!
8. Miserable and thoughtful at the same time...(and from a great album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg_dsk7u26A
9. My dad, passed away in August but I probably didn't mention it at the time.
10. I'm planning to change strings between now and NYE if I get chance but that's about it.
11. Really drove the band along and a great vocal match up with Rossi. RIP Mr Parfitt.
12.
Here's one, but: Brace yourselves! Calling this garbage is being mean against garbage.
Think you've missed the remit BT. OP looking for miserable, that was just sh*t.
13. I did begin to wonder how they were doing a while back, it seemed a lot of the places I used to see CR and Prog had stopped stocking them. I'd urge anyone that's looking for an alternative to give the Classic Rock Society a go. The magazine only comes out every other month so it's a bit lighter on the pocket.
14. Xmas eve probably not so cool, a working men's club type place in a town centre so I'm not sure how many will be out that night, could go either way. Played same venue a couple of months back and I don't really think they were our sort of crowd. Worst case scenario is it will be a warm up for the next gig and we will still be on better money than usual. NYE however promises to be a good one. Proper music oriented venue, they seem to like us since they decided to put extra money up to have us on in addition to the DJ (its usually just DJ only on NYE) which was a nice gesture and from the last couple of times weve played there we can usually get a good sound from the room. Will pay around twice what we usually get from a pub gig, can live with that.
15. There were a lot of gushing songs about the beatles in their early heyday, eg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ec6HpzJ8gRI&list=RDec6HpzJ8gRI#t=37
16. I add a certain comedy value to the procedings usually...
17. Foreigner
18. That was last year, he'll be 71 by now
19. I think a mate's getting me a ticket for xmas to see Tyketto in Jan so I guess that will be my next one.
20.
I've never understood why rehearsal rooms tend to have bigger amps than most of us gig with!
I reckon they pick em up cheap from people who realise, too late, they are too big to gig with
21. Did an unpaid dep gig at a charity fundraiser outdoor festival several years ago which was 'backline provided, just bring a bass'. It was some sort of Laney combo which must have been faulty, kept throwing out these weird non-harmonic extra tones on top of the note I was playing intermittently so it sounded like you were in tune, then out of tune, then back in etc, awful awful object that I would happily have set light to onstage if I'd been allowed. I noticed the band after us brought all their own backline, obviously done that festival before. I have used Laneys in rehearsal studios which werent totally pants but never inspired me to actually buy one either.
22. Yep it's down to the PA and the room provided. In most rehearsal places neither are big enough for any sort of rocking out shenanigans so better to keep a lid on it and do your hearing a favour. It's not a public performance, you need to hear each other properly first and foremost if you are working on stuff.
23. Long overdue, the man has strode like a colossus through popular music for years.
24. Should be plenty of used, nicely played in instruments for that budget. Let someone else find and rectify any teething troubles, have it for a few years then decide to move it on at a loss. Happens all the time. I got my US made jazz on eBay with hard case for under £400 when the new price was about twice that. In fact the shop receipt was still in the hard case and (because it had been bought on Denmark St) the owner had paid a bit over twice that and it was about 18 months old when I got it, apart from a few scuffs on the scratchplate it was mint.
25.
Sunday night Last in Line and Inglorious - good old rock and good new rock, Inglorious put on a great show and the singer has a real voice. Bassist has a few chops as well
Saw these bands in Nottm last Monday. Good value (there was actually a third band but didnt gt time to see them) though Phil Soussan of LiL seemed to have a real problem with his IEM's, lots of gesticulating to the wings, also massive bass feedback surge right at start of first song, even with pro's you could see it throw them for half a song or so.
