1. Back to Ringo, I found it interesting in interviews where he says a lot of his style is quite accidental as a result of being left handed and made to play a right handed set up kit so often not quite in 'correct' place at the 'correct' time and putting in fills to cover it, also all the 'playing off the shoulder' stuff.
2. Very lucky in current band. Gtr and Vox are a couple and after previous bands and working as a duo for years have amassed a quantity of good quality gear and a small van to transport it to gigs in. We all help lugging it into and out of venues but they insist on all moneys being an equal split at the end of the night. I have a monitor with slave I can bring along if we are on a particularly long stage and still have a mixing desk if we ever need an emergency one at short notice so there is some backup spread around rest of band but not to the std of the main PA.
3. Got a link?
4. If they could play those tunes welll I'd go see them.
5. I heard a clip of this on Evans' brekkie show and thought Eltie's voice sounded well weird too. Maybe its just that one he struggles with but I agree it sounded de-tuned to death.
6. I only used it for one gig as an experiment and it really wasn't loud enough (it's the 100W version) so it's now my practice combo which is actually all I intended it for at purchase. No mutes or or fx loops involved, just plug in my bass and play. Except not at the moment I've taken my old Marshall B25 out of 'shed retirement' for the interim. Got all the paperwork, will take it back to retailer at the weekend.
7. Not used my Fender rumble 100 for a couple of weeks. Just turned it on and no output and the little red lights for power on and the drive on at the other end are constantly blinking. They carry on doing it for a while even after disconnecting the mains power which is a bit weird. I assume it has a fault, I have the receipt and its only a few months since I bought it so either repair or replacement under warranty should not be an issue, just wondered if any other current rumble owners (think this is version 3?) have seen this.
8. Bugger, saw him playing with Ian Gillan in Leicester on the Toolbox tour.
9. A lot of current band set is 80's AOR/melodic rock stuff. Use exactly same rig I've used with 60's/70's band, blues rock band, pop/rock/indie functions band etc - Fender J or P into TE 300W 1x15 combo with a 2x10 extension cab. Occasionally used a Ric with same rig too.
10. Current band have always been less than an hour. Weve picked up a few agency jobs in Bedworth and Nuneaten which is a little under an hour if you time it right. Our singer booked us a gig in Spalding without realising just how far it would be (about 2 hrs each way for me). Then someone else we knew played the same venue, told us it basically wasnt worth the effort for the money paid and we pulled the gig which is very rare for us.
11. Currently on holiday in Crete, every live act ive seen has been a solo artist with a backing track so not just uk struggling to fund full bands. The bar was raking it in too, €5 for an ouzo & lemonade ffs...
12. Good night last night to a partisan crowd in Nuneaton now just got back from playing an afternoon beer festival set close to where I live, got good feedback from both gigs and maybe some contacts or other gigs off the back of them, all good. Only slight downside was moaning minnie doing between band announcements saying we were too loud. There were people with infants at all the front 3 tables in front of stage, not one of them moved, flinched or covered any childs ears at any point in either set. Apparently it was 'better second set once we turned down'. Except we didnt change any settings from one set to the other
13.
The Pretty Things. Still one of my favourite bands, even if their post 1980 output has been mostly dull. However the most recent album released last year and recorded with the current live line-up is a welcome return to form.
Nearly went to see them at the Flowerpot but the date clashed with another band I wanted to see so they missed out. I liked '...Are In Bed Now' too.
14. I'm just about the only band member that musically doesn't go through the PA (OK we don't put all the drum kit through either, just some bass drum) and we seem to control our overall vol fairly well, though it's probably me that says 'we're a bit loud' at soundcheck and we usually are. We've been asked to turn down just once since I joined the band. The guitarist doesnt have overly loud onstage vol at all, puts it through PA to do the work. I had to tell him to put the level of his guitar up a bit in the monitors as I was struggling to hear him direct from his backline over the noisemeister drummist. Sounds fine out front though which is what really matters. We are playing classic rock too which naturally requires a certain degree of assault on the ears. Its as much about judging the room and audience and tailoring it from there.
15. Probably ELO (more to their older material) but I was on the cusp of getting into the heavier and more progressive bands around that time too. Even then I tended to listen more retrospectively to the older bands than those that were 'relavent' at the time. However NWOBHM happened around then so rock suddenly came to the fore again.
16. Gigged for years with only 1 bass even though I owned more. Currently taking 2 but that's because one is in D-G-C-F tuning and I cba to relearn the rest of the 'normal' tuning set to that bass. So guess depending on where the bass failed in the set I could recover to some extent, maybe with a bit of running order jiggling. Don't take backup amp even though mine is probably 20 yrs old and I've never had it serviced. In the event of failure I have a DI box and our PA is good enough that I could send the bass through the bass bins in an emergency. The drummer doesn't bring any dupes for any of his kit iirc, not sure if he even carries a spare kick drum pedal. He might but never seen him have to swap yet.
17. Never whilst playing, one string broke from new when I was fitting a new set many years ago (replaced FOC iirc) but that's it. Which means I will inevitably break one at tonights gig
18. I was en route home from a few days away down south so it seemed polite to drop in and see 'our shell' who did a sterling job up against a stageful of people likely to compromise the bass region (sax and keyboards as well as two guitars). Bass cut through nicely though, could hear every note. here's a couple of snaps of the lady in action:
19. OK gig last night, never looked like it was going to be busy (BBQ weather) and you do wonder why some of these out of the way places actually bother putting music on but we gave it our best shot. A few tech glitches with gear in second set (none of mine though) but nothing major, they ended up giving us more than the agreed fee at the end and will give us a repeat booking for next year which was nice. I had played there before with another band playing totally different genre of music but I don't think it was that busy then either. Bit of a break to recharge batteries then a few more higher profile gigs toward end of month.
20. One thing I did think about on YYZ was those fiddly little fills he does in 2 or 3 places don't sound like they were recorded with the rest of the bass track, maybe dropped in later? I might be wrong but one of them sounds like it actually overlaps one of the notes slightly of the 'main' line which also suggests its an extra overdub. The tone of the fills sounds different too to me. Of course there may be lots of edits in there for all we know, no rule says it all has to be one take. Most final parts are probably composites of various takes I guess.
21. I think he has a great future.
22. I know, at my age. But I'm past caring now.
23. A lot of stuff in there from the set list of a band I was in a couple of years back. We didn't do that many weddings but enough for me to learn it really wasn't my scene. The money sounds good though I agree.

Bass Attack 2

Sorry if this is old news but looks like Hartke have revamped their Bass Attack pedal. I'm not sure if this is actually available yet though? http://www.samsontech.com/hartke/products/accessories/pedals/hba2/
25. Started out as a bossa nova.
