de afwerking mk5-4f - blablas does another build diary
BassBus replied to blablas's topic in Build Diaries
Headstock looks great to my eye. -
In 1991 I bought Allan Holdsworth's Secrets CD because everyone said what a fantastic guitarist he was. Played the CD once and thought that's just c$@p. Never played it again. Roll on ten years and I'm playing in a jazz band. Methinks I should get said CD out and have a listen. Knock me down with a feather. It is fantastic. Still listening to it ten years on from that. My mind had become used to improvised music so I now understand it and can see how great Holdsworth is as a player.

D'Addario half-rounds are good but I find them a bit sticky. I have used Status halfwounds a lot and they are less sticky as time goes on. However the sets I've had recently have had E strings that have very little tone in them compared to the other strings. D'addarios have been the same. The strings I do like are Thomastik Jazz Flats, JF344 set. Smooth as the baby's proverbial and have quite a bright tone. Cost a lot to begin with but last a long time.

Have all the expensive basses been a waste of time?
BassBus replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
Really? that must be why nobody ever sits next to me on the bus.......
You're lucky. They won't even let me on the bus. -
What a waste of money all that turned out to be.
I wouldn't say that at all. What if you hadn't bought any of these expensive basses? You would always be wondering "what if". Gary Willis once commented on what influences us as musicians, or anything else for that matter. The things you don't like influence you just as much as the things you do like. Having owned all these expensive basses you know, without doubt, they are not for you. Money well spent as I see it. -
How about trying the Amazing Slow downer. http://www.ronimusic.com/

Copy the "viewing" link. At the top of the reply box is an icon that looks like a TV. Click on that and paste the "viewing" link into the URL line. Click OK. Job done.

Having trouble changing strings - Sorted for now
BassBus replied to malbass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I don't think it will be a problem with the bridge. When you are changing strings put them on but don't tune to full tension. When they are all on keep them loose enough so that you can still move the bridge underneath them. Keep the feet in one place but move the bit touching the strings towards the tailpiece. Then tune up. That will bring the bridge back with the feet sitting flat on the face of the instrument. This might take a few goes till you get it right. I hope that is clear enough. That's how I've worked it. If anyone has a better way I'd be happy to hear it. -
It's actually a piece of junk but it is still causing a bit of discussion here

Will be this week hopefully. The body has been at Mark's having pickup routing done and a mat finish put on it.

Plain psychology. Your ear is attracted to that particular tone so it is more aware of it. Quite normal.

When I first started playing with the band I play in it was just a depping spot. As time went on I was getting more and more playing with them. Funnily enough it was only at practices. The other bass player never missed a gig. Money involved in that, surprise. In the end the band said to other guy that as I had been helping them out so much I would be doing half the gigs. Surprise, surprise suddenly my playing at practices dried up as he never missed one. I called his bluff and left the band. I went along to see them at a local gig shortly after that and came the question "Has Bill asked you to come back to the band. We never know when Derek is going to turn up". Sounds a similar situation you find yourself in. Don't pay. If the other guy values his place in the band then he needs to pull his weight.

Interesting. My very first bass was exactly the same shape and had exactly the same neck. It had Raver on the headstock and it was truely crap. Cost me the princely sum of £27 in 1977. Still have the bits in a box if anyone wants it.

Glamour models can't play bass - fact.
BassBus replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
Glamour models can't play bass? Nonsense! You want proof?
That's all the proof anyone needs to say women can't play bass. They give good video though. -
Funny thing life. Just been setting up my BB1100S and I see your thread. These are very nice looking basses and Yamaha necks are always good. You will enjoy this one.

YUM! Is that the bass that was in The Gallery?

Luck wished. I wonder if these are made in the same factory as the Korean Spectors? Maybe under licence? That might explain the positive reaction to them.

Someone once said to me "Never sell a musical instrument. You'll always regret it". I have taken him at his word. Now I need a bigger house.
Hello, Forgive my Rant just a personal view......but what's your opinion on the roll of the Bass Player.....to me it was always and still is to keep it all together??? So why is it the need with so many Bassists today to 'Be so Flash' Just an example watched a clip of Rhonda Smith don't get me wrong she's amazing....but the clip shows her with the band.....another Bass Player doing the Roll of Bass Player....while she's out front playing Bass like a 'Lead Guitarist' loads of effects and so on.....not just her but so many out there....why this need to 'Push the Boundaries' eh Rant over.......Just 'Keep the Groove'.....Cheers.
There is a simple answer to this problem. STOP WATCHING YOUTUBE! What you see there is only the tip of the iceberg. For every flash Harry you see on YT there are probably another hundred holding the groove.

I don't usually like maple fingerboards but this is looking quite special. The neck joint at the back looks lovely too.
