1.
If the gap between the string and the fret is thicker then a business card size i just straighten the neck a bit to see what happen.
Yes. Keep checking how the strings play on every fret so there is no buzzing.
2. Yes, it's an East U-Retro. Monstrous tone from 9v.
3. My restored SGC Nanyo Bass Collection.
4. Body and neck are original. New face, electronics and finish. Here's the (re)build thread with some of the goarey details.
5. When you check the neck relief capo the first fret as you did then hold the E string down at the fret over where the neck joins the body. Check the gap between fret and string at the 7th fret. Others will suggest other frets. I usually go for a gap of about 0.30mm which is about the thickness of a business card. As for string height (action), that is a very personal thing. If you like digging in a higher action might be best. Lower if you are a gentle player. Remember though, the higher the action the more you'll have to adjust the intonation. When you fret the string you are stretching it. Tune the open string to pitch. Pick the harmonic at the twelfth fret and then fret it and pick it again. If there is a difference in tuning the intonation needs adjusting.
6. I suppose it depends on how you use your bass. If you just like to plug in and play with the same tone all night then a pre will probably not be a lot of use. I play in jazz and take a solo from time to time. I like to cut all the mids for normal backing lines but the bass does not cut through the band when soloing with that tone. If I'm playing a bass that doesn't have an onbaord pre then an out board pedal is useful in that context.
7.
Statuses. Best argument I heard about that was from an English classics student who said (1) we're conversing in English so make plurals the English way and (2) the plural of English in the original Latin is not Statii anyway. See also this link which cross-references a few dictionaries. Looks like that well-known Status-oriented website should probably change it's name.
Equally we could just be a bit more light hearted about life. What would Sigmund Freud have said about that?
8. Here's my newly restored 301(ish).
9. Well boys and girls, here she is in all her glory. Just picked her up from Chris McIntyre and he has weaved his spell once again. He has done a bit of snagging and finished off all the little details and fitted an East U-Retro. I am just stunned by it. It sounds like no other bass I have. The East preamp is just monstrous and all from 9v. I'm going to see if I can get some more detailed pictures up at the weekend so this will have to do for now. I might try and do some sound clips too.
10. Moderators don't have to say please.
11.
Took me a moment to realise you meant sheet music, very confused for a minute.
Well sometimes the way I play it it is sheet music.
12. I carry my music in an old brief case. It's empty when I'm playing so the amp sits on that. Does a perfectly good job. Mind you it's only a 12" combo not an 8x10.
13. Just how small is small? This small?
14. Nice job. I think Mr. Green would approve of that.
15. Here is my latest acquisition, a GWB-35. I've been humming and hahing about one of these for some time. Went for it and bought this from Grangur (Richard). Lovely bass. Restrung it with TI Jazz Flats, set it up and tuned to E-C. I have never liked a low B string so that had to go. I am used to 19mm string spacing but this has been very easy to adapt to at 16mm. Going to add my Roland synth pickup to it and having the high C should allow some interesting chordal stuff. More fretless porn to come shortly.
16. Christ! That's a skilled craftsman at work. Fascinating to see how that has been done. Hat's off.
17. If you want to use it with a computer You'll need a USB lead and synthesiser software. Do a Google for "Synthesizer software" and lots of choice should come up. If you want to record it from there then you might need a DAW.
18. "Made in Korea" - flagship????
19.
All that effort for... poor timekeeping.
A drummer with poor time keeping? Who'd have thunk it.
20. I went to see Preston Glasgow Lowe recently in Hexham. Great gig. Kevin Glasgow is a member here and a player of emence ability. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5JpvXv7lUA&list=PL54oYlP06deC2Zt4RbrzhfKCj49jUmN__
21. I thought for a moment that this would be THAT other drummer. This is a bit of fun. I'm just left wondering how long those springs will last.
22. OOOH! The oil is really bringing the figuring to life. How are you applying the oil?
23. Nothing to show this weekend but the bass went into Chris McIntyre's workshop in Edinburgh yesterday to have the electronics sorted out. All being well there should be sound from it within a week or two.
24. You might like to PM Kevin Glasgow on here. I was speaking to him at a gig at the weekend and he expressed an interest in a Status six string. Might be worth a try.
25. After a long break the bass has been with Mark for the last three weeks waiting in the queue behind his other work. Pickup routings have been done and a satin finish applied. What I find interesting now is the pickup positions. In the photo below you can see more clearly the fills of the old P and J routings. The J coincides with the back coil of the new bridge pickup and the neck routing sits exactly where the P was. Mark made comment about the bridge pup positioning as Lorne did earlier. I think this will give me just the tone I'm looking for. Only problem now is the bridge is one or two millimetres off centre. Not a huge problem but it will always annoy me.
