1. Lines/no lines is a whole other debate. You will get people saying yes to both. When I started double bass I drew pencil lines at 3rd, 5th, 7th as reference points. As time went on those marks naturally wore off. By then my hand knew where to go (usually) and my ear guided on any correction needed. There will always be dots at these points on the side of a fretless bg neck to give that reference. Eventually with practice your hand/eye/ear will coordinate and give you the right note. As always it will take practice. Lines will give you more of a reference point. However, if you have a high action on the strings you are still going to have to compensate as when you press on the string you are stretching it. That will change the intonation point. If you have a very low action that's not so much of an issue. If you start on an unlined board that cuts out one lair of learning, i.e. not having to learn to play without lines.
2. Practice on fretted so you can play fretless better. Apparently someone called Jaco did that. If you can play a fretted without any fret buzz then you'll be bang on with your intonation on fretless. Listen to all the great fretless players, Willis, Mick Karn, Bilbo. They all know/knew what they were doing.
3.
Fixed
What would you know. You have a picture of a F****r in your avatar.
4. I say play to a level you are happy with. If you feel you could do better, practice. If you don't mind being a crap player but you enjoy it, what's the problem. No body should beat themselves up over their playing.
5. The old down to personal taste answer. But seriously.. I play actives. I play in a jazz band and like a tone with the mids rolled off completely when I'm just playing a backing bass part. When it comes time to take a solo that tone just does not cut through the rest of the band so I like to wind the mids up to flat or boost. I don't want to go back and forth to the amp to do that so it is useful for me to have actives on the bass.
6. The Hohners are fine basses. Still use mine from time to time. I seem to remember they were actually held in higher esteem than the Stein. Spirits. Never played a Spirit so I wouldn't know.
7. Yeh, it's a Stealth II. Seems a shame for the seller. Going to go for a song just because he can't be bothered putting a new tuner on it and a new set of strings.
8. Not all ESPs are metal machines by any means. I have a B-204 fretless and it is one of my favorite basses, even up against my Status S2. The necks are much slimmer than Fenders, about 19mm deep at the first fret. I get a lovely warm tone from mine. I think they are made in the same factory in Indonesia as some Ibanez basses. I'd say search some out and give them a try. I don't think you can beat them for price.
9. Agreed Bilbo. Here you are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cI_Sq-S5dug
10.
So by the time I get on 'Later', nobody will be watching it? Typical.
I wouldn't count on it. All the people on here who complain about it watch it. Then they come back here and complain about it.
11. I have an Acoustic Image Contra which I have used with both double and electric. Sounds fine with both. If you're interested in Markbass, I'd go for the CMD121P. Lightweight and the 12" speaker will give a little bit more of a rounded tone than the two ten inches. Bags of power as well. I'm often being told to turn mine down even though the volume never passes twelve o'clock. That would be much easier to carry around on public transport. As for 4 or 8 ohm. The Markbass CMD is 8 ohm on its own which would push out about 300w. With an extension attached it would fire into 4 ohms and push out the full 500w.
12. A very fine looking instrument and it didn't take that long either. Enjoy the playing.
13.
I'd lose my dignity...
14. I'm almost willing to take a punt on that. Not that ugly, IMHO. It'll sound like any other piezo equiped bass. Might be better with new piezo bridge but for that price you're not going to loose much.
15. 11 wooden basses lying on the deck 11 wooden basses lying on the deck and if one wooden bass should accidentally sell there be 10 wooden basses lying on the deck Wonderful picture and some sumptuous basses. Myrtle looking good in the sun.
16.
That was like walking barefooted and stepping in a dog turd. Yuck.
No. I did that yesterday and it felt better. Well I had boots on but it still felt better.
17. I once tried a Trace Elliot 30 watt bass amp, in a shop I might add, and it distorted straight away. I don't think low watt amps are that great for bass. Just in my experience. There will now be plenty who say they are great. I'd go for something around 60 to 70 watts.
18. Number six should be enshrined in law.
19. ...and the two of them mention it in this interview. http://www.level42.c...radio-scotland/ Quality.

Eve basses

I have no experience of them but they do look rather tasty. http://www.eveguitars.co.uk/
21. I don't think you can be OTT enough when it comes to planning. If you have good planning and foundations it makes the rest of the job so much easier in the long run. Fascinating so far.
22. I've shipped to Germany before via UPS and it arrived with no problems at all. Cost me around £130-140 as far as I remember. The bass was in a hard case and packed in bubble wrap and cardboard with plenty of tape round it. Only problem was UPS trying to sting me for extra carriage. This despite the bass being checked and weighed at their Edinburgh depot. I challenged them on it and they didn't take it any further.
23. If you want to find out about the full history of American jazz you won't get better than Ken Burn's series on the history of jazz. Worth every penny. 24. I'm waiting for the Providence Dual Bass Station to come out next month. Looks quite useful for what I need. Don't know about dirt on it though and it is 24v. I like the idea of being able to control the mid frequencies.
