Phil Jones Bass launched their Bluetooth-equipped combo at NAMM too. Dunno anything about price, features, whether it's any good or not, etc.
the look on phil jones face after he asks the sales guy to demo the quantum 800 and gets the slap fest...!
+1 such bitter criticism, when nobody has actually even tried the product, is ridiculous, whether it's Ashdown, or Behringer or anybody else.
what I was going to say - I came had another look at this thread as I wondered why it was still at the top of the amps forum.... we seem to be at page 5 of people hitting ashdown with a stick of a product that isn't even out yet. Mad. Ashdown could come out with the best amp ever, they could outdo AER for small high performance stuff, they could out boutique your favourite boutique maker... and they would still be damned on here before the thing had even come out.... it's a shame
I do think the correct gear for the gig is important so if it look crap and sounds about the same, then I'd not want it on the gig, tbh. When we've had deps in, we've learnt to ask what they'll bring as turning up with inappropriate kit is somewhat insulting. By the same token, when we get together and decide what sounds are needed, a keyboard, for example, needs to have very good sounds and if it doesn't, its not on the gig, and probably neither is the player. That's not snobbery, IMO, that is just picking the right person with the appropriate gear.
I think it's important to make a distinction between gigs where that is important and gigs where it isn't. If I were a 19 year old wanting to get into the big time with my indie pop band then the ubiquitous Fender USA P or J would be an absolute necessity. If you were in a a beatles cover band then a violin bass would be it I guess.... on the other hand me turning up at church to play image really isn't important so as long as it works I can play what I want - the PA guys very much prefer my higher end stuff but some of the other guys play budget stuff. So it's important (for the sanity of this thread at least) to differentiate between the two extremes and suggest that all bands lie between the two somewhere. Also it strikes me that ability plays a part. I imagine if I came to audition to dep for your band and brought my couple of Warwicks I might be nicely asked to go away. I imagine is Pino, or someone of his ability, turned up with the same bass the playing would be what matters.
When you think as bass players we are concerned about how thick the paint is regarding amplified tone of it in a live mix it is amazing any of us have ever seen a naked lady never mind actually touching a real one possibly even in a rude place!
with the absence of touching *ahem* there, maybe that's why the feel to touch of our wood is important? crikey this is almost at Finnbass levels!

yes. Just play the thing.
I'm keeping the amp. Played the epifani against the vanderklay which is what I was going to buy and they both sound very close to each other , so Im going to save myself a small fortune and keep the epifani as I have falken in love with it again
yay!

way I see it.... if you use that body shape, same shape headstock, put the pups in the same place, and the knobs... then that's a direct copy. If you use that body shape, different headstock, different knob position.... then it's not going to be mistaken. plus if you did get the thunderbird shape and want to improve it you would make it slightly smaller... and then add a top horn.....
He said he had someone pay for something by bank transfer on a Saturday and then the money was removed from his account on the Monday because the other chap was involved in fraud. So I respect his wishes.
that would be another good reason. I think generally different people have different ways of thinking... for me I have a policy that I'm not going to take a cent off you until I've got the thing in a box and can post it to you within a couple of days - I'ld imagine that some folk would find that annoying as they would want to get the deal "done". Other people I know and I've sent things too without me having the money. Some people don't want to do bank transfer, some people don't want to do paypal. Given how many pros/semi pros are on here I've never been asked for a invoice for what I've sold. Which suggests either people aren't claiming stuff back as expenses to lower their tax bill, or a load of money isn't going through the books.... The one thing I would say is that in many ways cash is the easiest thing, cash is our currency and it's way more reliable than some electronic transfer. It's not so hard to go to a bank... In the OP's example you could have gone round, transferred the money, the bank flag it up for investigation and then you have to stay round there for a few days till the bank clear it? There's a limit to biscuits and tea that can be provided!
What else should we talk about? You don't want to discuss how we actually play the bass, do you? That would be crazy! Anyway, here are your answers: Are Fodera worth it: No. Barefaced handles: OK by me. Flavour of the month: Squier. Probably. Rosewood or maple: Maple. Are Fender any good: Sometimes. Valve or Solid State: Valve. Unless you have to carry your own amp, then Solid State. Tweeters: Yay. Reflex v Horns: Horns.
STOP IT!
Get back to us with your opinion after you've built a few dozen guitars and/or basses using different body, neck and fretboard woods.
experience? experience? this is into-web-forum land - where actually knowing what you're talking about doesn't quite matter as much as giving an oppinion about something. now wheres that hitting a dead horse emoticon you've got on your forums
Luke, if you'd been on basschat back in 2008 you could have designed the logo! I can't find the old thread about it but it was a collaborative affair with deksawyer providing the bulk of the final look. So blame him if you don't like it!
it wouldn't stop me for one second buying one of your nice cabs (big series ) but I might not buy and wear one of your tshirts as I was playing through it.
It can make a major difference, with guitar as well. The more dense the wood the brighter the tone, and the longer the sustain.
oh dont start that one again! Well not before weve been around "fodera:worth it?" "Barefaced handles I have known" "this months flavour of the month love in" "rosewood or maple" "are fender any good" "valve or solidstate" "tweeters yay or nay" "and "bass reflex vs horns"

Screw it down more...
Thanks for that Luke. Mine is 001176 so possibly 1977, which sounds about right I think it was a couple of years old when I got it.
though interesting as not all that first 269 would have been BB1200 then... which makes me doubt the model breakup. Does mean we've got the both got the one of the first couple hundred Yamaha BB's though which is cool! Theres a later 70's BB1200 on ebay at the moment -why are these early yamaha BB's so so so cheap secondhand compared to everything else?
-
Cool. Yamaha serial numbers from that period are notoriously difficult to make any sense out of, I was wondering how he'd definitely established it was a 1977. My BB800 has a lower number, and I bought that used in 1979.
http://www.yamaha.com/yamahaguitars/ElectricandBassGuitarSerialNumberSystems.pdf If you look on page 2-3 at System # E1 So that bass is probably 1978 not 1977. My BB1200 is serial number 001134 which would suggest it was the 133rd Yamaha BB1200 ever made - what number is your BB800?
You can't see it, but here's my S112 in action last night... It sounds awesome. So round, warm and growly. Lots of clarity even without a tweeter. Love it
I heard your slughtly bigger TKS cab you had lent warwickhunt the other week. It was nice which model was that?

Buying from Europe :: £ strong against the euro
LukeFRC replied to largo's topic in General Discussion
Need to watch pricing trends carefully - the prices on one major European made brand being sold by a very large European online retailer have quietly risen over the last two weeks. Some products actually rose above UK main dealer prices last week. . .
I don't think it's great for UK bass players to be honest - for a few months/years european based shops with good customer service undercut UK based shops on certain items, it's the local UK shops who's margins are squeezed and who either stock less bass stuff or go under. A few years later the euro recovers and suddenly we don't have stockists for a lot of the major brands outside london, everyday shops carry only one or two brands of bass, and in low numbers and our online superstores in germany aren't as cheap as they were..... -

but I guess your 5000e Ritter might have just got £200 cheaper in the last 4 weeks....
