What's the general standard of player who reads Basschat?
LukeFRC replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
See, that comment above from CamdenRob surprises me also. I admit though, I am guilty of making incorrect judgements / guesses of what I 'assume' a users standard or level - call it what you want - to be based on the quality of the gear they display in the sig. So I'm seeing mentions of Wal and I automatically start thinking, "hmmm, must be a session player or semi-pro at least!"...
I think you might find that people with other professional jobs might end up with a bit more money to spend on a Wal than a pro.... Nout wrong with that either. Whats my level? I don't tend to play enough, just in my church band. I've been in other bands - want to find a bunch of folk to play with here too... I'm not some grand master of the bass... I don't know as much theory as most (but know a bit more than I let on) .... and never had a lesson in my life.... don't know many "classics" and have tended to play in originals projects most the time.... but at same time chuck me in a band with a drummer I know I can do ok and better than average as most my "learning" as playing live with folk rather than learning from books. -
A test of this sort will only tell you how the speakers you're listening to it on sound. If that's a full sized stereo system with flat response from 30-15kHz you might glean some benefit, but even then the gear used to make the recording is just as significant as the source. If it's a typical computer speaker the test is meaningless. Even listened to on a good system the test is of dubious value, as the main difference between how different drivers sound will be heard off-axis. A meaningful test would be done with the mic placed 45 degrees off-axis.
ssssshhh we know all that but it doesn't mean that it's not vaguely interesting - if anything to (possibly) repute the whole 15s sound darker than 12s sound less punchy than 10's stuff we hear on forums all the time...
I'm part basing mine upon my previous listening to the 15 and 12 TKS cabs, that and the second one sounds most different.
know all!
Similar thinking here - actually something I've been *trying* to do for many many years! Who can remember the ISP rig I had eh?! I'd like to hear these and then have a pair of FR's stacked - maybe a third just..well.. because.
Can you pull your basschat card and borrow one for a review for us all?

Warwick Fretless Pickup Change: Suggestions?
LukeFRC replied to Bronner's topic in Accessories and Misc
I also would say that IMO unless you build and design something yourself* the EQ-01 is probably the best and only filter based preamp out there to get you into "Wal - like" territory - it will take you a good while to learn how to adjust it on the fly (and also that it's best not to) ultimately you'll have to do what I did and make a leap of faith. Warwick Fretless Pickup Change: Suggestions?
LukeFRC replied to Bronner's topic in Accessories and Misc
1. Did you use the passive MEC pickups that came with the Warwick? 2. Your bass is fretless? Sound clips please. If you have some sound clips or video of the bass, I'd love to hear it; that's exactly the type of information I'm looking for. And in the process you'd be helping ACG sell some preamps. The issue with after-market parts always is knowing how it will sound in a particular instrument.
nope - my Warwick is an old Streamer Stage One and would originally have had Active MEC pups, It now has passive barts Nope it has frets and I do have a very long MP3 of some random playing at church that was recorded straight from the desk. It's not that great but you can hear the bass... PM if you want it. I would say that as a preamp it can give you so so many options that my awful playing isn't really going to tell you that much... -
Lightweight subs are certainly very interesting but not sold on the tops based on the specs and price...
is that for PA use or bass?

Warwick Fretless Pickup Change: Suggestions?
Hi I know there have been several fitted to Waricks and as far as I know people are happy with the setup.
Yep - me for one. -
I want. Don't tell Mrs FRC - I just picked up a lovely green mesa walkabout scout - no idea how I would justify this one to her! It would have to be one in one out... and still don't think I'ld get away with it!
With a frequency range of 42Hz - 160Hz there's not a pre amp in the world that will make it sound like a bass amp. It's clearly a dedicated sub..............AND I WANT A PAIR!!!
16 kHz !!!!
-
I had a GK 1001rb for a short while... if the amp is anything like it... turn the master output volume up near full and use the gain to control the volume and see what that sounds like.
The Warwick puts out about 450W at 4 Ohms, which pretty much OK for small venues but if I grab an 8 Ohm cab that produces about the same output, it will then allow me to add another cab once I have convinced myself it's OK to wave bye bye to my fridge shaped lover. I really do love the 810 but really don't love shifting it.
poppycock! 450w at 4ohms will tell you the firstly the cabs power handling (either thermal or displacement based) and the cab's nominal resistance. It won't tell you how loud the thing will go. My guess is that the Barefaced Big twin would go louder than the either of your current cabs.

How to get round headstock copyright issues
LukeFRC replied to chaypup's topic in General Discussion
You appear to be getting upset, if I may observe. Fender did not "turn a blind eye". They started making Squiers in order to beat the copyists at their own game, by legitimising some of them - getting them to make legitimate Fenders for the Japanese market in return for them taking their own branded copies off the shelves. An arguably more positive approach than the necessary "threaten everyone" approach when you go down the trademark/trade dress approach. Am I the only one who finds the whole "Chinese junk" thing a bit off? A bit disrespectful in my opinion.
They also tried first to protect the IP of the design and trade marks of the shape of body and headstock - and it was shown that as they hadn't historically tried to actively protect their IP the designs had become generic ith the only part trademark able being the headstock shape - which is why you see japanese guitars using their own headstock shapes from 1982ish onwards. rickenbacker have to show that they are protecting their trademarks in order for them to still be upheld... hence they have to go after everyone from real forgers to japanese guitar lovers... my guess is given the choice - or if they were based somewhere other than the USA they would do otherwise - but they have to do what the law in the states wants them to. -
I get how some folk will cycle through a large number of instruments trying different things.... I've done it myself in the past... I don't get how you might order a custom bass, wait months for it to be built and then stick it on ebay a year later - but I guess it keeps the builders in business....
I've had people on here get funny with me for not replying to PM's straight away. Sometimes, amidst the absolute carnage that is my job, I may get the chance to take 30 seconds to see if a BC'er has replied to the message I sent at 7am before work, but I will often unlikely have the time to fire back a response. If it's a payment for something, well that would mean waiting til I can get home to log in to my online banking, which would have to wait until after I've picked up the kid, fed her, put her to bed, walked the dog, cooked dinner, ate dinner, at least attempted to make the house a bit tidier, before I finally get around to sorting it out at roughly 9pm. 3.5 hours wouldn't work for me.
I have had my phone in my pocket randomly reload pages so it's marked as read on basschat even if I've not realised it's open on my phone in a window somewhere. Possibly my fault but *shrug*.
My gumtree name (if there is such a thing) is randomjoebollocks53. PM me sometime and we can quote Swinburne to each other. And in other news... This 'Will sell to quickest payer' thing could easily be misconstrued as seller's hyperbole similar to 'First to see will buy'. Throw in some stuff like 'drives superb', 'shabby chic' and 'plays like buttah' and there's every chance people might come round just to slap the seller in the chops. And rightly so. It's funny, because I've been unloading all sorts of stuff on Gumtree recently. The non-musical stuff attracts pleasant, reliable people who pay the asking price, arrive on time and depart with the goods. The musical gear often pulls in drab, hopeless teen f**ktards who open with 'Knock of fifty quid M8 and I'll hav it' then get tearful when you say 'Thanks but no thanks'.
My best is still the guy who offered me half the amount I asked for as it had a few knocks.... on a 30 year old bass! utter tool.
Where oh where is Fumps?
Over the other side of the river to me here in Leeds - want me to go wave at him from the window?

Solid state sounding clean valvey? mesa walkabout Aguilar TH500 Tecamp Puma (well the powersoft ones) Purple Chili Phat bass.... even the TC RH750 - not my cup of tea but emulates a big old valve amp (more SVT) fairly well or depending on the church I've had good results in my church using a Zoom B3 to feed both the PA and my own amp and use that to provide the tone

I got one in the scout combo a few weeks back - I love it - the bass sound in my head! Sounds good with the ACG preamp in my streamer (not all amps do) so I bet it goes with your ACG nicely TheGreek What cabs does it pair well with? (aswell as TKS ) There's a limit to how much a single 12 can do so wondering what else would pair up nicely with it on the bigger end. 8ohm cabs are out the question. When I got mine I also tried it in a Ashdown 8x10 and a barefaced 1x15 - for me I missed the tweeter/top end. Ideally I would build something but lack the crossover knowhow
What is it about GAS that you move on gear for perfectly valid reasons at one time, only to sometime later wish you had it back/another one? It took me a good few Jazz basses to come to the conclusion that I don't like them very much. I felt like Charlie Brown where he keeps going to kick the football, and Lucy moved it every time...but he keeps going back, because this time he'll get it! ....and the cycle starts again!
ive done the same with jazzes... had more of them than any other type of bass... great but never gelledwith them at all.

Ive got one bass that cant be improved - for me theres no way I could improve on it. ive got another that my wife gave me and is awesome sounding. and a third that is lovely and realistically I wouldnt find an improvement unless I added a lot more money to it. amps ive fannied around with so much stuff the last few years- but finally found an amp that both sounds amazing and also fits with the basses ive got. Sometime a fretless and a ray would be nice but... im happy for now.
Why not borrow some old valves from someone to see if you hear any difference. If not, then there will be no need to waste your money in getting some of your own. On some circuits the valve seems to make a huge difference, on others almost none. You won't know until you try. You should be able to get decent old Sylvanias, Brimars and Miniwatts etc from ebay for about £30 each. Make sure the seller states that they are tested and gives the actual results and, ideally, offers a refund for faulty ones. I must have bought several dozen old 12AX7's over the years from ebay and not had a duff one yet. IMO genuine Blackburn Mullards are the best, but they do cost.
good idea.
Frankly, the best thing to do is go SS. IMHO, the difference valves make, be it a hybrid or all-valve, is unpleasantness for hybrids and too much weight for all-valve. Unless you have a roadie.
had all solid state for years - some solid state amps are nice to my ears, others horrid, some hybrid amps are nice, others no so nice. Some all valve amps I guess are great and others not so great (but all heavy). I've got an amp that I like a lot and it's happens it's got some valves inside it. *shrug*
See, the problem I have with all this twaddle (how do you do the 'cross out' thing?) stuff is that I come from the 'bung another 83 in & it'll work' generation - and, amazingly, it did !
[s] it's the strikethrough - the s with the line through it[/s] - as to the valves you're probably right as too "working" , but theres a bit of me that's curious
My experience with NOS tubes is that some amps are built for the tubes to make a difference in sound and some not so much.
good point
