1. James Williamson of Stooges fame spent many years working in microchip design eventually becoming a vice-president with Sony. His colleagues had no idea of his past. On retiring he rejoined The Stooges.
2.
Same with Rickenbacker for me
Me too - had one for 20 years and sold it for £400. It had neck issues and they were going for £500-600 on ebay at the time. Never missed it but I still sometimes see one for sale and get tempted.
3. My favourite Yes album is Drama !!!
4. Might Just Take Your Life for me. Love that keyboard. On another day it might be a different one though!
5. A friend of my brothers was having her 18th birthday party at Julie's nightclub in Newcastle in 85/86 ish. They asked if she minded if a new local band played a set. The band turned out to be Dire Straits, who had just played at the City Hall. I think my brother said they played for about 2 hours.
6. Never thought about it but I would say bass player.
7. I've used Class D for about 5 years and been very happy with it. A couple of weeks ago I had a gig where, the last time I played there, people were putting pints on top of my amp from alongside the stage area while I was playing. To combat this I decided to resurrect my old rackmounted Ampeg (a split pint would likely go onto the floor rather than into the amp) which hasn't been used in anger in many a year. It sounded great - really full. My wife, who knows nothing of amps, commented afterwards that she could hear me better than usual. At my next gig I stuck with it and was really impressed with the growl when I dug in. I can see it being my first choice for the near future but may alternate depending on the gig.
8. Blackfoot - Ken Hensley Foghat Savoy Brown
9.
Newcastle used to have 7 or 8 gear shops: Sound Control, Sounds Live, Windows, Jake's Bass Place, the vintage shop near the fire station, one at Eldon Square (the street not the mall)...
I think you mean Howard's Bass Place? aka Bass Doc Jake's is a guitar shop in High Spen. There's not a lot round here these days - half a dozen decent quality basses if you're lucky.
10. Mr Blobby by ....I'll get my coat!
11.
If it has a bolt-on neck, maybe think about removing it for shipping. Consult your buyer though, as some people don't like this. The advantage is that you remove the weakest point (i.e. the neck/body join) and also reduce the size of the package. Couriers often don't like awkward shaped boxes, and a smaller box may be handled more considerately... Then all it takes the buyer is five minutes with a screwdriver to restore the bass to its proper condition. Always use more packing than you think you'll need. Anything that is available will do - I've used old towels, blankets, cardboard, bubblewrap and even old T-shirts!!
I have also read that this can get round the musical instrument exclusion policies as it becomes parts of an instrument. True or not I'm not sure.
12. White Bear by The Temperance Movement for me.
13. I don't use GK cabs (although it was very seriously considered last week). It's only the head is GK (although that might change soon ) and I currently use a standard speakon with Ampeg and Barefaced cabs, although not at the same time - all very confusing!
14. Not yet. Thought I would ask first in case somebody had an instant resolution - "you need a new high voltage flange capacitor"...or something like that! I'll give that a try, Cheers
15. My 1999 2 band Stingray is working but on full volume I only get about quarter of it's normal output. A battery leaked in it at one point but after cleaning up it worked ok after that. Anyone in the know?
16. Man (the Welsh band) who once featured John Cipollina (from Quicksilver Messenger Service)
17.
Roadworn Boss TU2. It just works.
+1
18. That's great. I'll get one on order from OBBM. Cheers
19. I've just ordered a second 8 ohm cab to use with my GK MB500 Fusion. I've only ever used a single cab and have some recollection that the cables for GKs were different to standard Speakons. Am I right with this or have I made it up? Will 2 standard cables be OK? Also, how do I connect them - as I've said I have never used two cabs - both from the amp or one from the amp to cab then to the other cab?
20. I'm North East based as well. £200-£250 par for the course for the average pub gig. Hasn't really changed in years.
21. That logo was used 79-81. Same as mine. I like that sunburst.
22. I think the 824 was usually mahogany with a maple top, Doesn't seem to be that though. The 924 (active version) was solid ash so could be a variation on that. It is very nice though.
23. Did you get one - I've been thinking of trying the same? If you did what was the result?
24.
Its a shame the british blues fraternity has not moved on, i get what you are saying, i was in a 12 piece blues band doing bang upto date stuff from mainly the usa and when we played fests yes alot of people would say what a blast of fresh air, but you would get the pipe smokin crowd saying thats not blues.... christ, move on, all that was done 40/50 years ago and its getting a bit yawney now. dont get me wrong i love blues, but if i go in a pub and hear another version of red house al scream
I saw a guy from work once while heading out of a Buddy Guy gig. I asked what he thought to which he replied "The playing was OK but there's no place for humour in blues." That was why I'd enjoyed it! Some more to try out: Greg Koch and the Tone Controls Doyle Bramhall II early Elvin Bishop
25. I voted once although I broke two in the same gig. I was trying out some lighter strings - 40-90 Superwounds - remember those? I went straight back to the 45-105s and still use them.
