1. They were the favoured amp of choice a while back. There have since been others and now there is someone else :-) I've played Eden WT heads since '99.
2. This was the video that turned my head, got me doing a bit of online research and, ultimately, making the purchase.
3.
Has anyone tried running the preamp signal from an amp with perceived lack of heft into the power section of an amp with heft, and vice versa to isolate whether the issue lies in the preamp or power amp or both? In studio equipment, there are preamp designs that are well known to add colouration and 'fatness' to signals run through them (neve 1073 is a good example), so maybe the preamp implementation plays an important role.
I used to use the pre section of my RH750 only- it never powered any backline. It was sent straight to the monitor engineer and sent back to my beefy monitor. FOH preferred it to my Eden as they said it was much cleaner. I liked the sound very much- it seemed less coloured and more articulate (although I hate describing sound) It was only when I left that gig and used the TC to power back line that I realised the power stage was lacking.
4. I've gone back to a slightly weightier setup. I had been using a TC RH750 (I know) with an Epifani 310. Sacked the TC as it was loud but with no weight to the sound- it just disappeared in the mix. Went back to my Eden WT550 and noticed an immediate improvement but I found the Epifani seemed to be almost more box than driver. Recently bought some Berg HD cabs (112+210) but won't be gigging them until Saturday. Fingers crossed. The whole initial experience put me off D-class. It may have been purely a TC thing but doing some research makes me think that D-class isn't for me. A shame as I loved the ease etc but not worth the trade off for me with my current gigs. Heft required
5. I have a rosewood 5 string V7. Superb for the money- the last 3 words being the important thing. A pretty decent bass if it was twice the price. The neck radius might be something to watch if you hands aren't a decent size. The preamp is a bit fiddly but sounds great. The tuning pegs feel a little 'cheap' but they're adequate. My bass isn't light but neither is it too heavy. I've had heavier. I much prefer this to my old Lakland (Skyline) JO5. Bottom line is, it was £320 give-or-take. That's ridiculous.
6.
I think it was Chris Childs that played on the early stuff, I met him at a gig in Wales when I was doing sound for a touring club band, I was talking to him about Paul Young's No Parlez album and he said he used to share a flat with Pino, they had both started learning Fretless at the same time and in his works "he left me for dust" Given the CV's of the band I was working with I have no reason to assume that he wasn't who he said he was
I didn't realise their past was linked- funny because I saw Chris in SW London around '99 in a blues band and his style of playing had an air of solidity and subtle flair that reminded me of Pino. He's a(nother) lovely player.
7. I don't think Sly and Robbie had much to do with the STRR album- it was more of a Trevor Horn project. An amazingly-well produced one at that 😀 Robbie S was involved in some of the numbers on Island Life which featured the song STTR though.
8. What year was this? It feels like 85/86 in my head. Great memories. You mentioned Slave To The Rhythm- EPIC album!!
9. I've only ever heard him in this context- plenty of palm muting and that pizz triplet pluck style thing that he has down so well. However I recently saw him online playing as a sideman with Gino Vannelli on his 2014 tour (an uber hero from my youth- his voice just gets better with age). It was really refreshing and bloody good! Garry- you'll love this https://youtu.be/rsiNHxIH7EY
10. I think I'm coming out of the Neo speaker/class D amp thing and getting back to ceramic drivers and my solid state amp. It's a weightier lift but a weightier sound to boot.
11. I've seen more hen's teeth than these basses!
12.
I had the pleasure to play with a BB2 as well as with a Vanderkley EXT112 (among EBS, Aguilar and Tecamp) in a test I performed for 12" bass cabs for a Greek music forum. Both were excellent cabs in their own way and clearly, for my taste, the best two of the bunch. It would not be easy to choose between the two but if I was hard pressed, I would probably lean towards the Vanderkley (which I have to admit that I purchased). That does not mean that the BB2 was by any means inferior (though being a pre-production model had some minor quality issues that I am sure that have been fixed by now) compared to its Dutch counterpart. My feeling (and I emphatically repeat, for my taste and needs) was that the EXT had a better overall balance for (small) live /studio / home practice use whereas the BB2 sometimes felt to me as being a bit “too much”. There were (of course, being in the south-east part of Mediterranean) some steamy arguments about both cabs (as well as for the others but to a lesser extend) and which one was the best. One thing I can say though, is I can easily live with either of them with the confidence that both of them are excellent cabs backed up by very prompt, friendly and courteous support from their manufacturers Marc and Alex. I would like to thank them both for the experience they provided me with. Here is a jam with the BB2 https://www.youtube....h?v=cW3NCWz5zEo And here is one with the Vanderkley https://www.youtube....h?v=rMbWrns0CRw
Hey, I haven't clicked on your links as I've already seen your videos a while back. The one thing that struck me when I watched them was your reaction when you played your 5 string throughout the Barefaced cab- you turned around and nodded approvingly and gave a good bass-face . What was it that made you do that compared to the others?
13. It is Rocco's autograph- "KYDA"= Keep Your Dreams Alive Ain't Google wonderful?
14. I remember when you bought this- it seemed like a great buy and It piqued my interest as I was after an active 5 string jazz at the time. Don't panic that it's getting loads of interest- that's what you want. I did the same with a bass I was selling so took it down thinking I was missing something. When I wanted to sell it took forever!
15. There was a thread on here about the heavy duty Thomann gig bag- it's about £30/40 and sounds like it might be the kind of thing you are looking for.
16.
The last loon I had at a gig was a shapely drunken young lady. She hassled me for ages to be allowed to doing backing vocals. Culminating with "I'll show you my tits if you let me sing." Her vocals weren't bad as it happened.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!
17. I believe JT has the bass that BE recorded Good Times on but a bass tech cut the old (full of funk) strings off and replaced them with a fresh set. Nooooooo!!
18. Good use of EQ and compression are your first ports of call. You could Google "free Saturation plugin" to see what there is to dirty your sound up a bit- it can always helps bed things into a mix at times. I have a few- check these out too- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lx5a3l3B37c I use the Softube plugin and have used Bark Of The Dog on a few things (not just bass)
19. Scott H plays like an absolute MF on the Elektric Band live in Barcelona gig which my mate had on VHS back in the day. He and Carlos Rios were so much more to my taste than Frank Gambale (who was no slouch though!) I bought Light Years first which was a little more mainstream so when I got the 1st album on vinyl my head blew off!
20. Was it played with a plectrum? Planet Earth was and still is but he plays Rio fingerstyle now. If BE had played the original I think it would have been tighter tbh. JT's a nice player but he's no Nick Beggs :-)
21. Sounds like you've just bought yourself some TKS cabs perhaps? Happy New Gear 😀
