1.
....Anyone who cannot hear the strength of his playing is making choices that are based on a different aesthetic. He was an absolutely unique voice who stands repeated listening decades after the fact. I don't listen to Jaco as a fan boy; I don't like everything he played on by any means. Nevertheless, I just hear him every now and again, shake my head and smile.
This x100. I was a bit of a fan boy though in the late 80s- listened to him so much in those days and, I might say, my playing probably suffered as a result. I was all back pickup and staccato notes! I rarely hear him now but I heard this the other day and it moved me so deeply. Simply stunning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpaFTPmp2Pw&feature=youtu.be

3.
Crikey! How would you compare the B strings?... as the Lakland is the first bass I've had with a B string that's pretty much as playable as the other strings.
I enjoyed playing the Sire last night more so than other "spare" basses I've owned. It's a great bass and considering it's a 34" scale bass it doesn't suffer from the flappy B string syndrome that I've heard so much about from some 34" basses. Certainly on the Lakland I can get stuck into the B more- the bass seems to have a slightly compressed/tighter sound whereas the Sire behaves more like a Jazz. They are very different basses but if I chose the appropriate bass for each gig I do then I'm on to a winner. £300 for a bass like this is fantastic- yes the pre is a bit fiddly but you soon get your head around it. As a side-note I've owned 2 55-02 basses and neither came close to the quality of feel and sound the US bass.
4. +1 for a Sire. Incredible basses for the money. A slightly quirky preamp layout but what a great bass for little outlay. I've gigged with a £2k 55-94 for about 13yrs but after taking it and my new Sire V7 5 string to a theatre gig last week, tomorrow's gig sees the Lakland staying at home. I'd struggle to part with proper decent money for a Jazz bass again.
5. Crikey. I'm done. I thought Michael Manring was over my head...
6. Congrats on the Dad-to-be bit and tbh when your baby arrives, any second thoughts or regrets about parting with the bass will be blown away. It's the BEST thing Anyway, you can't be a proper Dad with a 33" scale necked bass. It has to be 35" with 19mm spacing . I jest. GLWTS but even more good luck with the journey.
7. I listened to this album and Whatcha Gonna Do For Me on a drive to a gig on Saturday. I hadn't listened to them for a while- the Brecker sax break out of "Move Me No Mountain" into "Naughty" is so beautiful and on the money. What a tone- he's so badly missed. So much good bass material on those albums. Jaw dropping AJ lines- the only (fractional) solace being that he didn't come up with them on the spot!
8. Lowdown makes very valid points (as ever) You can't beat old-school dots for speed etc- Pantos always evolve throughout the run. You can mark things up in ForScore- and I have- but you'll never beat the speed of a 2B pencil on paper. A comedy IPad/Airturn moment for me was stepping on my OC2 instead of the Airturn and getting a blistering Pino/Earth Song octave bass on a page turn :-)
9.
The lines are the fret numbers one to nine then? Sorry if that's dumb but its all new to me!
No they are the bar numbers for reference. In this case a bar has 4 quarter notes (crotchets) in it. The zeros indicate on which fret you would place your fretting hand (LH if you are plucking with your RH) In this example the 0s mean you play open strings- if the numbers were all 1s then you would fret at the first fret.
10. I think an Airturn is about £40 from Thomann. If you go the paper route there is an art to turning pages without dropping a beat so to speak. You either need to read ahead and turn earlier, tape your parts together accordingly or hammer-on hard whilst turning with your right han! Believe me, you'll be amazed how quickly you can turn a page after a bit of practice. It's always good to know what is over the page if you miss the page turn though. Yup, done that plenty of times 😀
11. I find the control section far from ideal but can live with it for the ££. I'm not a fan of mid-range controls on Jazz basses anyway so I won't be touching mine. For £300 however, I find it hard to criticise anything about the instrument. I'm not sure I'll be able to spend proper serious money on a bass ever again. The plastic peeling bits mentioned in the OP are supposed to be there for protection surely? Peeling them off is part of the fun of a NBD :-)
12.
Mike Stevens is the MD, and it's the same band that played the Queens Jubilee, and backs Gary Barlow solo, and Take That on tour. He plays guitar, keys and sax, as well as the BVs : talented bugger. First call band for these high profile gigs. The keys player was an original ELO Band member - the only one I think. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec12/articles/mike-stevens.htm
That'll be the mighty Donovan Hepburn on kit then? He's no Bev Bevan mind 😀
13.
Bass boost at 20Hz?
I though that- that's pretty trouser-flapping, foundation-loosening and sub-buggering. It's a pretty steep boost too; you have to be very gentle and precise. It's a bit excessive for me but for £300 brand new, I have to say I love it.

15. That was "What About Me"- they chucked in a tempo change at the first 'head' There is an amazing version on YouTube- its the album version from 'We Like It Here' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuhHU_BZXSk
16. I did the Bristol gig too- it was a pretty special atmosphere and I echo much of what is being said on here. It was amazing seeing a rammed venue for this kind of music. They are creating a pretty special buzz which reminds of the kind of adulation that Weather Report garnered back in the day which can only be a good thing. The venue was full of musicians from throughout the South West as well as Bristol-based punters. I guess the Apollo date not being sold-out is down to the size of the venue- much, much bigger than the O2 Academy, coupled with the fact they were in Brighton the night before (or was it the next day??). I think ML is an excellent bassist- there is more to life than monster chops although he has them I'm pretty sure. He directs and encourages the band brilliantly- is very tasteful and has excellent ears. Tickets booked for Cory Henry and Sharay Reed already.
17. Heard him on Chris Evans' show this morning- his new release was played. Bass sounded great. Is it Guy Pratt? The little ad-lib fills had a Pino-like authority to them which is actually quite possibly a Guy Pratt-like authority.
18. I honestly think it's the way things work around here. There was a lot of noise about Vanderkley a while back- usually around 12 months later the For Sale pages start to feature things that have had people talking. I've seen it with Epifani and TC Electronic. The latest seems to be Barefaced cabs and maybe Maruszczyk basses. No question of the quality of any of the gear whatsoever- it's just word-of-mouth thing kicking in and people trying gear out. It's great because then a secondary wave of people come and try the s/h stuff out and so on. For instance, I use the aforementioned Epifani cab with a TC Head!!
19. Barefaced do a 2x10 which runs at 4ohms.
20. The 80s was a big time for me- I started secondary school at the beginning of them and was almost done with 4 years of music college by the end of them. The music went through as big a change too didn't it? 82-85ish is what I class as my 80s. Anything later, in retrospect, sounds like early 90s and anything earlier is almost late 70s. The same goes for most decades I guess. There really was some terrible music back then but strangely even music that I didn't massively love first time 'round makes me almost weep today. Tears for Fears' .."Rule the world" being one of them. Talk Talk 'It's My Life' is another (great bass sound- in fact it was the decade of the upfront bass sound) Music innit?
