this is coming on so well, the more I look at the progress pictures the more I want you to build me my next bass, I might pluck up the courage to ask you about prices etc one day! Matt
I bought an old Badtz Maru Musicmaster (look it up) and put a hotrails strat sized pickup in it. It's great...high output, drives nicely.
this was mine, does it still have the custom pickguard I made or have you gone back to the original one? I really liked this bass, I only sold it because NancyJohnson asked so politely. Matt

I didn't win it, someone else was prepared to pay more than me. Matt -
Ibanez SDGR500 Replacement Bridge?
Matt P replied to anaxcrosswords's topic in Repairs and Technical
it sounds like the screws are a tiny bit loose in the saddles, the usual fix is to set them to the right point then put a tiny drop of clear nail varnish on them to hold them in place, they are probably just vibrating themselves loose as you play and the nail varnish trick usually fixes it. Matt -

I've had a reply, the spacing is 17.5mm which is exactly what I was hoping for, I'll be bidding on this bass on Saturday. Hopefully no one else will be bidding and I can land myself a bargain, Matt -

you can definitely see the dingwall influence, I'm hoping he's copied the 18mm string spacing as well, I'm not too worried about the postage, I think he's factored he cost into the starting price, and it says that it includes a hardcase as well so it should be fairly safe. Matt -

I'm just waiting for a message about the string spacing, if it's in the 17.5-18mm range then I think I might take a punt, has anyone seen one of these up close, or maybe played one? it doesn't look like it's boutique but the workmanship doesn't look bad from the photos. Matt -

this looks interesting, it's got one bidder already, is it anyone on here? if not then I might have a punt at this, I've sent him a message asking about the string spacing, this might be a cheap way for me to try out a fan fret bass. Matt -
I've not tried them myself but you could contact https://www.facebook.com/pepper.pedalboards I believe that they've doe this kid of thing before and they're based in the north east. failing that you could try one of the local custom amp builders like Stoneham, if the don't make their own encloses then they should be able to get you in touch with someone who could help

The tuners look identical to the set on my 1977 precision. Matt

what speakers are they? is there room on the output plate for another socket? adding another socket is a fairly easy job, about 5 minutes work with a drill; a bit of wire and a soldering iron. you'd only need to add the socket to one to allow you to daisy chain the cabs. Matt
-
if I remember right these have a pair of power amps in them, one running each output, it sounds like one of these has given up the ghost, I know that Ashdown had some quality issues a while ago (manly with the power section of the Superfly) it might need a new board, I would get in touch with Ashdown customer service, there's also a sticky in this section with amp techs, there should be one near you who could advise as well. are your cabs 8 ohm or 4 ohm? if they're 8 then you can daisy chain them from a single output (assuming they have 2 sockets each) and it should give you a similar output to running one speaker from each output. Matt

ahh, I've just seen the little row of switches, the video will have to wait till I get home from work as I don't have any speakers or headphones with me. maybe the M is the better option, do they tend to be heavy? My back would prefer something under 9.5lbs if possible but this isn't a total deal breaker as I have gigged my 77 P-bass which is closer to 11lbs! Matt
G&L M2500 tribute - 17.5mm spacing chunky neck simple controls within budget https://m.thomann.de...e_m_2500_hb.htm https://m.thomann.de..._2500_black.htm A review of the USA M2500. The Tribute has the same made in USA pickups and electronics as this American model: Boom.
Why didn't I think of this! I think there might be a shop near me that stocks these as well, thanks what's the difference between the M-2500 and the L-2500, it seems to be just the preamp, are there any other differences? I think the simpler controls of the L might suit me better. i'll keep my eye out for a sterling ray35 as well Matt
I think you'll be OK so long as you're reducing the string spacing rather than increasing it. I prefer 15-16mm at the bridge but can play up to 17.5mm. I'm surprised that you found so many basses with such narrow string spacing!
It seemed to be cheap musicman copies that had the tightest spacing, that was the style I was looking at mostly because I was hoping to find one that copied the spacing of the USA ones, they all seem to be copies of the olp ones. Matt

by my calculations going from 16.5 to 17.5 spacing adds a total of 2mm at the 12th fret and 3mm at the 24th fret, I'm not sure how many basses would have this extra width in the neck, I'm going to have to take a tape measure with me next time I go out bass hunting.
Look for a bass with a Schaller bridge, the string spacing can be adjusted. Or fit a Schaller bridge to a bass you like...
This is my back up plan. I'd just need to make sure that the strings don't get too close to the edge of the fretboard at the highest fret. I have seen a couple of possible basses locally as well. Matt
I have Yamaha NE BB2 that has about 17.mm string spacing, more that your budget, but there is an older version here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/272405-yamaha-bbn5a-90s-discont-model/page__p__2900894__hl__yamaha__fromsearch__1#entry2900894 May be worth asking what the string spacing is?
I've asked the question, but I have a feeling that it's 19mm spaced as it seems to have the same pickups as the rbx765 I used to own. The bb ne2 has the right spacing but as you noted it's far outside my price bracket! Thanks Matt

i'm hoping to tap into the collective knowledge of basschat here, my main bass is my Letts 5 string which has 17.5mm spacing at the bridge and a lovely d-profile chunky neck, i'm looking for a second bass for backup at gigs and probably to have strung up with rounds as an alternative to the chromes that i have on the Letts (although i won't rule out chromes on the new bass) the string spacing is the main thing that is important to me, i have tried many basses with tighter spacing and they all feel wrong (and I found myself clipping the wrong strings with my right hand while playing) I guess that 18mm spacing might be ok but not any more than that. so far i have tried Ibanez SR's, Warwick Corvette, Yamaha RBX, Cort A5 and a number of budget Stingray copies that all had very tight spacing (16.5mm and less) the RBX was 19mm and felt far too wide. A nice chunky neck would be a bonus, i'm not too bothered about active or passive but the simpler the controls the more comfortable i am. What basses would people suggest i try? my budget is about 4-500 pounds and i'm happy to buy secondhand or new. so far the only bass that seems to fit the bill is the USA Musicman sub 5, and while there is one in the classifieds the seller hasn't been on for months. Thanks in Advance Matt

I don't know much about the shop that you took it to but I'd be tempted to try and get another quote to fix it, there are a few good repair places around, this thread should help http://basschat.co.uk/topic/198-recommended-amp-techs/. some places just don't want to bother and would rather sell you a new amp than fix the old one I'm assuming that it's the Eden Nemesis in your sig, these seem to be solid old-school type amps so it should be repairable at a sensible price. Matt
-
please report back if you buy one, I've been looking for a 5 string for a backup and these look very tempting. especially at that price. (I'm really hoping they've copied the string spacing from the original bass, if this is 17.5mm spaced then it's exactly what've been looking for!) Matt

the aggie has the same polarity as the Boss standard, I'm running mine from a cheap Harley Benton supply with no issues, it sounds like this one has died, hopefully you can find someone local to take a look, I know a guy I the Newcastle area if you're local. Matt

as long as it's got standard through-hole construction (rather than surface mounted) then it should be repairable, most of the circuit diagrams are on the net so it should be possible to work out what the issue is. what pedal is it?
