1. have you considered swapping to the traditional BBOT bridge and then fitting a bridge cover? that might cover up the damaged finish pretty well (and i think it looks ace! as can be seen by my profile pic.) Matt
2.
One of these years I will make this event. Down in London at a bass related event this year what were the chances of that. Bugger.
i'm dissapointed, but i think my bank manager has breathed a sigh of relief! M
3. I've already replied on the facebook post but i'll repeat it here, I'm coming along, will be bringing most of the kit in my signature below, If anyone has an Aguilar TH500 thant they could bring along then i'd be very interested to try it with the midgets. Don't forget that there is a lack of local shops to get food at so if you're coming for the whole thing you might want to pack some sandwiches, i'll bake something to share round though (cookies/muffins/brownies depending on my mood) Matt
4. while i don't actually own a TE head i do get to use one occasionally, my church has a gp11 ah250 as the house bass amp, i have always liked the tone and luckily it doesn't need moving very often as it lives on stage, i had one of the superfly amps and the tone from the preamp was very close, i really liked it but it got struck by the dreaded power stage whine/whistle so it had to go.) if they were to make an amp that combined the gp11 pre with a class d power section then i'd be first in the queue for one! (it would have to glow green though!) Matt
5. thanks for the links, are the far east ones slightly different to the usa ones? it seems that they want you to specify what arrangement you want with the far east ones where as the usa ones it says they are easily converted. has anyone tried swapping far east one from one side to the other? Matt
6. i'm patiently waiting for that link too, i've got ultralites on my Letts 5 String, no idea if they're the USA ones or the Chinese but they work perfectly, i had a 2+3 headstock arrangement so the b-string has a bit more length before it gets to the tuner, means that it's still on the taper when in tune, works perfectly,
7. if i didn't make my own i'd be Buying Obbm, in fact all of my speaker cables are Obbm ones as i couldn't get the same grade of cable in small enough quantities. Matt
8. ahh, well from what you've described maybe the pedalsnake is actually the answer! personally i wouldn't run the power along it ( never liked the idea of power and signal lines running together) so i'd go for a seperate psu on the board (i've gone for a harley benton junior and a palmer one as they both have isolated outputs which allows for 18v and higher current connections) but if you are happy running the power with the signal chain then a pedalsnake would appear to be the perfect solution. Matt
9. I'm Afraid that i don't have any experience with a pedal snake but having looked at the website it seems that it would be perfect if you needed multiple runs from the pedalboard to the amp (using effects in the amps fx loop as well as betwee the bass and the amp input) but taking my pedalboard as an example then the pedal snake is overkill, i have a single cable back to the amp (all of my pedals sit between bass and amp) and all of my power is on a single iec connector which is linked to a pair of power supplies that handle the myriad of power connections that the pedals need (one at 18v, one at 9v with high current and the rest on standard 9v connections) plugging in is pretty quick, run a cable from my last pedal to the amp and then plug my backup bass into the a/b switch (there's a Line 6 wireless reciever for the main bass) then connect a single kettle lead to the board and watch all the pretty lights blink on! from your signature it seems that you only have a few pedals so the pedalsnake might be overkill. Matt
10. i think that the status strings are made by Picato, i've got the status half wopunds on my fretless, and they are indeed great strings, (as an aside i think that picato also make strings for Overwater, i had a set of the picato flats on a precision and bought a set of the overwater flats for my old 5 string and they were identical in feel, look and tone.) Matt
11. i'm a flats only player, i fitted a set of the d'addario chromes to my Letts 5 string about a year ago and they still sound ace, in fact i have been complimented on the tone recently! they seem to settle very quickly then are nice and consistant, the price is pretty steep but they last for so long that when you finally get round to needing a new set you will have forgotton how much they cost. I did try rounds when i first got it but they didn't stay on for long, i used to exclusively used DR Marcus miller rounds and loved them but then i bought my 77 p-bass and it had a set of old flats fitted, everything just fell into place and it's been flats ever since. i have no idea what the strings are on the p-bass but they are perfect. Matt
12. We've used our R16 to record our 3 piece, we used as many line-ins and mic's as we could then used the onboards to capture the rest of the drums and a bit of the room, the results were pretty good but we had too much overspill from the guitar, if you can di the guitar and bass and then run the vocals straight in then you should be able to get some good results. Matt
13. have you looked at the Hercules stands? i use 2 of the single ones but they do a double one and a triple one. http://www.herculesstands.co.uk/product/85317/GS422B/Floor_Stands/Auto_Grab_Duo_guitar_stand Matt
14.
Thanks for the info. Line6 advised via their support forum that the G30 requires a minimum of 200mA although they also said that they would recommend providing double to cater for any drop in supply. I've gone for the Cioks Adam supply that has a regulated and isolated 9v 250mA output. Hopefully will run the G30 okay without any signal drop. I'll advise if it doesn't.
I'd expect that 250mA should be fine, I've never had any issues with mine at 240mA.
15. Is yours one of the ones with the wooden bridge or has it got a metal one? I'd imagine that getting a good earth on the wooden bridges is tricky. It might just be that the earth wire has been pushed into the wood, not uncommon at all on many production basses. Matt
16.
Does anyone know what the minimum power requirement for the G30 is? Online resource states that the supplied adaptor provides 9v Dc at 500ma but not what the minimum requirement is. I'm thinking of buying a power brick to power this and my effects to avoid the need for multiple adaptors but i can't find a definitive answer. i've registered on the Line6 forum and asked the same question but would like to know what anyone else uses.
I had the same question when I bought my g30, all I could find out was that it needs at least 200mA, I use the Harley Benton junior supply with a current doubler cable and it works a treat, I've also got the palmer version of the same power supply and that works fine too. They are 120mA per output so I'm feeding the g30 with 240mA. Matt
17. I thought that might be the case, what iem are they? Matt
18. you'll need to find someone who's very skilled with a soldering iron, the wires in the cables that i've dealt with have been hair fine and enamel coated so they're a pain to solder. but it is possible, go for a good quality replacement plug, i'm a fan of the Neutrik ones (the right angled 3.5mm stereo is my favorite as it has good cable strain relief and is solidly made. Matt
19. I've been put off shopping in the Newcastle branch of GuitarGuitar, the customer service has always been pretty poor in my experience, it just seems to be that branch though! sounds live and windows have always seemed more helpful. Matt
20. i'm going to agree with CamdenRob, i'd just put a decent set of standard strings (130-25 ish i'd guess) and tune it BEADGC, this should give you all the options you will need, anything below a low B is going to drop off the bottom of most bass amp/cabs anyway and sticking to a "regualr" tuning will make life easier if you ever need to use it in another band or swap over to a 4 or 5 string (playing a spare or a friends bass) the only thing to watch out for is that the xb76 is slightly longer scale at 35.5" so make sure that whatever strings you go for are long enough. most "long scale" strings should fit but worth double checking before you buy, some manufacturers quote the length from ball end to taper and i know that Strings Direct have the info in the descriptions. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings-c1/bass-guitar-strings-sets-c34#t96:page1:infscr1171:t172:t173 Matt
21. have you tried Manchester Guitar Tech? he can mix nitrocellulose to order but i think there's a minimum order size for custom colours http://www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk/ matt
22. I found that the best device for holding the plug solid while soldering it was a 2" cube offcut of wood, screwed to an offcut of laminate flooring, i've drilled 1/4" holes into the block and just slot the plug into that to hold it while soldering, as a bonus the offcut of flooting acts as a cover for whatever surface i'm working on! Matt
23.
I didn't get on with the micros I tried. MESA Walkabout for me. A little bit heavier than a micro, bit not much.
having heard the walkabout then i'd say that it's probably the perfect head, unfortunately they are pretty rare and the people who've got them are reluctant to sell (for good reason!) and i'm not sure that you could get one for £450. the Aguilar Th500 might be the next best thing. a few have been popping up in the classifieds recently. Matt
24. I've been lucky enough to deal with Howard on a number of occasions, wishing him a speedy recovery! he's one of the pillars of the North east bass Community. M
25.
I think this is a good point. If a guitarists amp fails and he cant afford to buy a new one or have it repaired then the band cant gig. Therefore should the band step in to pay for a new amp from gig money?
i'd guess that in a different band then loaning the money out of the kitty to pay for a hire amp or to fund a replacement would be a good idea, if the gigs are regular and bringing in money then it could be deducted from the guitarists cut until it was paid back, our band is a bit different because we have a running tab between us for other stuff (i think the drummer owes me for some snare wires and a couple of skins that i picked up a while ago, i can't remember if he paid me or what they cost so it's written off) Matt Edit - Monckyman got there before me!
