    if you're interested in the OCD, why not give the joyo ultimate drive a go ? you can get them for ~£25 and i've very impressed with mine, on both bass and guitar.

    i used to use one of these quite regularly in a rehearsal studio and was always impressed. strikes me as a bit of a steal.

    sounds like your drummer needs to learn some 'bandcraft'. a musician in a band needs to know when to shut up and when to play, when to play hard and when to play softly. one thing i can't abide is people who make noise at a practice when it's not time to do so. get him a tshirt that says 'STOP ! - EVERYONE LOOK AT ME !"...

    it's certainly a lot more rewarding learning a bassline by ear. i've been doing it as much as i can for the songs for the covers band - it makes me nostalgic for the days before the internet, when unless you bought a book or magazine, you worked everything out yourself. prolly why i'm still a sucker for a simple bassline !

    only once in all the recording studios i've recorded in has the engineer/producer actually got (what i would consider) a decent bass sound down to tape. the pecking order seems to be vocals, guitar, drums, bass. even with a miked cab, it seems overly compressed DI rules the day...
