1. when i hear the word authentic, i reach for my revolver (or rather a metaphorical revolver, my conception of which is made up of all the revolvers i've seen in films and television, the couple i've fired, the toy revolvers i had when i was young, the revolvers people have told me about, etc. etc. etc)
 2.
All that matters is that it has integrity.
there's a whole thread there my friend !!!
 3. whereabout is tottenham are you ? (sorry, just curious that there's someone else in my neck of the woods)
 4.
I would hope they are refering to their own feelings about poverty, not other songs about poverty.
they can't not sing about other people's poverty as their artistic outlet is informed by all other portrayals of poverty.
 5.
Maybe but, correct me if I'm wrong, this is the argument that if you are a millionaire superstar musician you can't sing about poverty. It just seems like a pointless argument to me but perhaps that's the argument in itself.
a poor person singing about poverty isn't singing solely about their poverty if they've heard any other music about poverty, or any other music for that matter. they'll be referencing all the other songs they've heard, even if they don't realise it. so, you could argue, their songs are as inauthentic as a rich person singing about poverty as they're not singing about themselves (f you believe that a rich person singing about poverty isn't possible, which i do not).
 6.
Every course has things that are deemed pointless but have to be there to keep the'establishment' happy.
music is an artform - i don't see how you can study art without discussing its development and meaning.
 7.
it means that unless you appreciate the 'oneness' of everything you are bounding/limiting yourself by your own subjective experience to be beholden to your own personal creativity and authenticity ommmmm
your own 'personal' creativity and authenticity is based upon a long sequence of ideas being absorbed, modified and re-used. all ideas are based on earlier ideas, so the idea that there is a inviolate 'authenticity' to any idea is, to a large extent, a myth.
 8.
Authenticity is the degree to which one is true to one's own personality, spirit, or character, despite these pressures.
but if your personality/spirit/character is created from an assembly of ideas and concepts that have already been 'processed' by others, what does that mean for authenticity ?
 9.
Does not exist in popular music. [/thread]
doesn't exist in any artistic endeavour.
 10.
OK, so maybe I am wrong about this and maybe it's questioning the reflection of the 'self', or otherwise, through popular music, rather than exploitation of the masses through musical hymns.
i'd interpret it to being about how the concept of post-modernism affects the notion of original and authentic work, and also about commodification and mass media. well, that's how i'd start writing it !
 11. tried dropping ashdown an email ?
 12. ooooooh. tres bon raymond.
 13.
Worth a look at that price, surely?
i prolly would if i didn't have a t-bass !!
 14.

i think i'm having a flashback
 15. any interest in a pearl octaver ?
 16.
It was on Ebay for £250 and nobody bid. It has a "crack in the paintwork" on the back. Hmmm...
is it a crack or just where the finish covers a join in the body ?
 17. in the post-modern era, does 'authenticity' have any meaning ?
 18. bought a dod bass flanger from nick, and a proper gent he is too. very happy.
 19. what are you talking about...the muppets are just left-handed !
 20.
This is why bass playing is so subjective. To me, this is a player at the top of his game. To other people this is a bad noise.
to me it's not bad noise...it's a very good bass player making music i don't care for.
 21.
Local luther to me charges £54 for a full set up that includes alot more than this guy offers. No ebay fees and no PP. Ive never used him. Just an instant example.
well, use your local luthier and don't buy anything from this bloke...
 22.
Fair play, he's transparent on what he's offering & what the buyer is paying for. IMHO, Good luck to him.
plus the one. his feedback's good, so more power to his elbow.
 23.
If you're going to do this, BE BLOODY CAREFUL!!
muriatic acid is hydrocholric acid btw...
