1. I find that when I'm swapping between basses the output varies somewhat, which has a knock-on effect on my pedal board - particularly the envelope filter and valve O/D unit. I'm looking at putting a small booster in my fretless to ensure parity between the outputs. Have you tried a compressor at the start of your pedal board just to level things out a bit?
2. EHX Bass Soul Food is an excellent budget pedal, so I'd recommend trying one of those. If you've already got an OD unit and want to keep the low end then I'd look at a blend pedal that will allow you to mix clean, un-overdriven signal with a dirty, gnarly effect, thereby maintaining your low end. Be aware though, that the studio recording you're referencing will more than likely be recorded this way (take a clean feed directly from the bass to mix with the overdriven signal) which makes replicating the sound somewhat tricky. My own personal favourite is the Dave Hall VT1 DI-EQ, but I understand that it's not a budget pedal - add a dash of the Waves R Bass plugin in the studio and it's every bass sound you'll ever need. Hard to replicate live though.
3. I don't mind Simply Red. I don't own any, but it's not unlistenable. My '80s were filled with Marillion, A-HA and then Anthrax and Megadeth. Good days.
4.
As Dr Dave's , not an openining line but one of my faves I saw 2 shooting stars last night, I wished on them , but they were only satellites It's wrong to wish on space hardware I wish , I wish , I wish you'ld care
Yeah, I thought of this too - Billy Bragg is one of the best songwriters ever IMHO.
5. After years of monkeying about with this sort of this I've settled on the slightest amount of buzz, just enough so that it blooms whenever I dig in (often) .105" - .045" roundwound stainless steel strings. I like a nice wide string spacing too (18 or 19mm), and shim the neck if you have to.
6. Can't believe this is still here, these things are superb.
7. This. Kill them, kill them all.
8. After serious consideration I'm prepared to drop the price to £220. This includes a 4U flight case (one of the handles is missing, and the mounts are damaged, but it's still a very secure method of transporting it).
9. Always nice to see a well repaired neck break - and when I find one, I'll be sure to let you know.

12. Yowza - 11.7kΩ for a 'P' pickup? Put that in front of a valve amp and it'll growl all day!

DIY Effects

Finished a Phase 45 clone this week. It's nice and swooshy, but not overpowering (like most phasers and flangers that I've tried). I ended up having to build a JFET matcher to measure the Vgs with my multimeter, but it's been worth it. I had to do a bit of bug-fixing on this one - turns out that the JFETs really do need to be matched...
14. It'd be cheaper to record the stuff in their studios then, as the composition stuff could be done anywhere. Also, if the worst happens and their PT system goes belly up then you've got a better case to mitigate. Seems unusual for an HE institution not to have contingencies in place when they're entirely dependent on 3rd party software which lis known to be flaky...
15. I used to have a B2RE many moons ago - great sounding head! Congratulations on your bargainous bargain.
16.
Fine wire wool, remove the covers first though.
This.
17. Why do you need PT? Unless your Masters is Protools specific then I reckon you're better off concentrating on the study part of the qualification, instead of having to learn a new DAW at the same time. Just my 2p
18. In the car it's mostly Radio 4, but at home it's always focussed, critical listening. I spend roughly an hour most nights through high quality headphones listening to any music I feel like. Why would anyone not listen to music, it's f***ing brilliant!
19. 2 gigs this weekend. 1st one was with Slander in Lancaster - I was a bit off, but we did alright 2nd one (4 hours ago) was playing for a Karaoke band at the Ramsbotom Festival - we went down well, but there were a few 'curveballs' in the set, meaning I messed up a couple of bits. Not happy with this weekend's performances.
20. I've often contemplated moving to a lightweight rig (I even went Barefaced® this year), but haven't found anything that feels as good as a big, half-ton head. I've played through TC stuff, OBTs etc… but nothing has really had that 'wow' factor. My wife would like me to have a smaller amp, but ultimately sound is king. To quote Joe Meek "if it sounds right, it IS right"
21.
If it hasn't been mentioned already, you can get a Realbook on the iPod, called iRealbook I think (imaginative I know . It's a very useful and handy little app to have in your pocket if all you need is a quick glance at the charts of jazz tunes etc. The app will also transcribe the charts to different keys too. PS... I think it works on Android phones as well, not just iPod.
It runs on my macbook pro too. Happy days!
22. Love it.
23.
Anything by Flanders and Swann.
Also anything from Frank Sidebottom's impressive repertoire.
