1. Well, the Fralin version is one of the few types I've never tried but that is only down to the fact that after I'd been through quite a few different types of these pups I found my Lollar... and it was good. I do hope at some point to try out the split coil LF version though just so I can make the comparison. My Lollar is thunderous (not hot just phatt - Imagine 2 standard Fender versions in series) but still retains that unmistakable old school sc P tone... what else could it do. I've never had any issues with buzz or hum with mine, although both basses I've had it in were both eventually shielded out as part of what I do with all my basses regardless of necessity. Get out clause - these are hand made and obviously subject to individual differences mine is a couple of years old now so there may differences between mine and the newer ones. In short, imho these are the king of the '51 P pups and if I had the cash right now I'd be snapping Clarky's hand right off.

    Weight!!

I think the phenomenon is more down to the consumer demanding a greater choice* and how little physically discomfort people are willing to put up with these days. I have had issues with a sore back/neck ever since I started playing guitar/bass over 25 years ago... but I'm not a complainer and certainly when I'm on stage with the adrenalin etc I feel no pain at all... until the next day that is. *some say the the concept of "consumerist choice" is what is tearing the fabric of our society apart... but that's a convo for another day.
  3. Speaking of 50p. Just the other day, I was regaling some incredulous younger band mates with boring tales about how when we were kids (early-mid 70's) me and my brother were given 50p on a Saturday morning and we'd head off into the city centre on our own... this in itself would be a no-no for 6 and 7 year olds these days. We'd meet up with some mates at the Saturday Cinema Club (special deal for kids*) where we'd spend a few riotous hours watching a handful of cartoons, some ancient black and white stuff like the 3 Stooges and a main feature (a Disney movie or something). Then en masse we'd all go next door to the swimming pool and spend a further few of hours in there, buy a sausage roll, a bag of crisps and a drink on our way out, then we'd catch the bus home stopping off at the corner shop for a bag of sweets (back then Black Jacks (with their very un-PC wrappers) were 1/4p each... I think you used to get 8 aniseed balls for a penny) and still have change for a box of matches so we could go and burn sh*t round the back of old Mr Hunter's garage. * incidentally my dad used to go to the same cinema on a Saturday morning when he was a kid too.... only the entry fee back then was an empty jam jar.

I hope your mate has better luck with it.
Looks like I was right. Just how knackered is it?
  5.
I think it looks rotten - and that's coming from a Gibson bass fan.
I actually quite like it... and I'm not a Gibby fan. What does this telll us?

  7. These are great guitars. I recently did a complete re-wire job and set up on one of these for a customer.... I never figured out what the sliding button in front of the tremelo bridge was for though - it wasn't connected to anything. What is it?
  8. Bone is nice and easy for us techs to source and carve to a perfectly fit. That's probably why he wanted to go with it over a bought in one.

  10. My opinion on both, buy either bridge but make your decision based upon looks and function rather than tone.
  11. Very nice indeed. Has a slight avian aesthetic which is nice. That neck resonance/tubing design sounds interesting too.
  12.
So if the decorator had his radio on too loud for you, would you be ok asking him to turn it down?
I don't know... but I knew this girl who always ended up looking like a decorator's radio.
  13. One of my personal builds has both options. If there is a difference, it's very, very slight. Therefore I chose to stick with top loading because it makes string choice a hell of a lot easier.
  14. Here's a helpful(ish) wee guide.... although 5 minutes of experimentation should reveal your specific configuration quite easily.
  15.
Does this mean you now realise the Sterling is the only MM that isn't worth burning?
Haha maybe. It just scanned better when I cynically thought it to myself... but then it came out loud... and I killed the thread... like the bass burning fasc.... Och no I can't do this any more
  16.
I think I'll start a Gibson bass forum and delete all dissent and ban those responsible. Then I'll watch the tumbleweed go by
There are already quite enough Gibson bass fora as you well know. You were the newest member to join most of them.... about 4 years ago.
  17. I used to rate the Musicman brand and I really love my 'ray too but after reading this thread and hearing about the <1mm gap in a neck pocket I have now realised that they are in fact a shower of useless c*nts.... and fascists too. I think we should all take our Stingrays, Bongos and SUBs out into the streets and burn them to teach the Nazis a lesson.... until all that's left are Fenders and Fender-a-likes. C'mon Basschat who's with me? Form an orderly line. Torches on the left. Burn 'em, burn 'em, burn 'em! *snap* Sorry did I say that out loud.
  18.
That's scary! No box at all? you've been very lucky, in my experience (lots) couriers look at fragile tape and ignore it, you've been fortunate up to now. Imo of course
Yep, I know for a fact that some bored employees will open the packages if they feel like it just to have a play about with It's contents. An insider once told me he'd even seen them play footie with a box marked fragile. Wrap sh*t up like your life depended upon it, that's my moto.
  19.
Oh, and I reckon you could probably get the MM sound, or close enough with 3rd party bits these days. Nordstrand or Delano make very good replacement MM pickups and John East makes MM style preamps. Most luthiers would be happy to work with those components... Eude
I have a wee stash of genuine MM pups.
  20.
Don't make me come over there you big gay
Ooh you big tease.
  21.
I've had my hands on this bass too... although surprisingly I live about 600 miles away from Mike. MB1. Now i'll not say this again! it's one tablet twice a day after meals. BUMP!
I know it sounds unlikely but it is true.
  22. I've had my hands on this bass too... although surprisingly I live about 600 miles away from Mike. This is indeed a veeeeery nice bass, fantastically well built too... and the same could be said for Mike.
  23. That's a very leading question. How many is too many?
  24.
it would be on a trip to Florida ;-). Just get a refund and blow it on a holiday, you've got enough good basses now.
Or San Luis Obispo, California and go pick one out of the rack for yourself.
