1.
So are the stamp and plate after-market add ons?
Fair enough that CS hardware was used (would have thought that any CS worth it's salt would have lined up the tuners better imho (mine does) - maybe it's more authentic like that? - anyway...) but that CS logo certainly needs a bit more explaining. Presumably it is subdermal? H, you've not come across any Geezer Butler gear in your time have you? You've got Lemmy's amp Steve Harris' bass. I'd love a Geezer bass.
 2. Guys just because I play in a stoner rock outfit, it doesn't mean that I actually am one. M'kay.
 3.
I generally let 'em boil for 5 minutes or so. You can usually see the scum building up on top of the water as it goes! YUK! Greg
I like to boil up my strings when I'm finished with them and have them as emergency spares. But when I've done it, I've left them cooking for half an hour or more so it gets a chance to really heat the metal and re-tension it... I've never had scum on top though.
 4.
Can't you come up with something an octave higher than you were playing it for just the one tune? B
Well yeah that's what I was doing until the guitarist suggested tuning down further in order to get the open A#.
 5.
i dont think an octave pedal would be very convincing, especially playing notes that low
Hmmm you could be right... although I'm talking about taking an A# and making it sound like a dropped A# so in the grand scheme of things it's not that low. I've seen a vid with Ed Friedland where he took the MXR octaver down to F# before it started glitching.
 6. I already have a 5er that I could start using in this band but I don't really want to as so much of what we play is based on open C. As for strings I'm good. I use XL 125's (just the BEA&D obviously) so I can get that nice low growl with my open C... they also handled the A# very well tonight and felt really great in fact. But cheers for the tip. I know what you're saying about the octaver this is what I'm fearing might be the case - whenever I've heard one on a bass, it just sounds like an octaver, it doesn't sound like the same thing played an octave below... if that makes sense.
 7. Looks like a Werther's Original. Perhaps it's a bass with senior appeal.
 8. Hurray! At last.
 9.
Truth is, notifications is broken. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.
I actually managed to rack up 2 full pages of notifications in my gmail tonight while I was away at band practice. I've never seen that before.
 10. We are a 3 piece stoner rock outfit with me and the guitar tuned to drop C (CGCFAD) At tonights practice we were jamming a new tune written by the guitarist.... only he's written it in a different tuning to our norm - dropped the Lower C and G down to A# and F. The tune's main riff is based around A#. I was happy enough to still play it in drop C (3rd fret "A" string) but he suggested I tune like him to get the real low sound on the open A#. I gave it a bash and it worked out fine once I got my head around how my runs were going to work with one half the bass tuned a further tone down from the other side.... which is already tuned down as it is. It's all well and good but at the end of the day I kind of find multiple tunings a bit old now and I don't want to tune this bass down any further when I have it specifically set up for drop C. I do get what he was saying and I do quite like the drop A# sound but these days I just see it as extra hassle. And to tell you the truth I didn't use the open A# all that much. I could take my 5 string along for that one tune and tune it down accordingly but I'm kind of looking to not take 2 basses to gigs. Will a decent octaver keep my guitarist happy or is there just no substitute for actually tuning down?
 11. I was listening to bands like Soundgarden (check the screen name ) the Melvins, Mother Love Bone, Green River, My Sister's Machine etc. before Nirvana hit our shores but I have to say that hearing Nevermind changed my life for ever. I think the world changed after Nevermind. Despite having once been in a Pearl Jam tribute for many years I am not comfortable with PJ being described as grunge. Ok it's a handy label to stick them in and there is some grunge DNA in their lineage but if PJ were grunge they are more like the Spandau Ballet of grunge... even when they try to turn the sludge up they just sound like garage rock. I think it's funny that we are now denying the term grunge as it defies a definition in todays eyes... back then we knew what grunge was. My name is Ou7shined. I am grunge.
 12.
+1 I don't want to have to live with a browser tab open on BC (or keep visiting periodically) just to see if there have been replies to topics I'm following. But it seems that not everyone's having the same sort of problems. Are notification emails working as they used to (i.e. one notification per topic per visit) for some people and not for others? Or are some people just not bothered?
What I used to get (if I left it long enough) was an email a day from each section of the forum with all the posts made in it and in the order that they were made. So I might have 3-5 emails a day with 20-60 replies in each. Now what I'm getting is an individual email notification per member's post regardless of sub-fora. And if someone replies more than once Gmail groups that reply with the previous reply from that person - bumping it down, putting that reply out of sync with the conversation. So now I am getting 100's of emails a day all jumbled up. Presumably this is just down to how the forum labels it's notifications. If the emphasis was on sub-fora rather than the poster's name wouldn't my email organise it like before? As it stands, unless this issue is addressed, it looks like in order to use the forum the way I used to I will have to change my preferred browser and also my method of email access. Hmmm that's not ideal. Another bug I've found : I have to click the edit button twice before the edit box opens up.
 13.
..Here's another strange thing. When i get notifications if anyone has typed a price in to a message all i get is a bunch of figures. Someone has typed £30 in one of the threads but in the notification it reads as code rather than as it displays here. Anyone else notice this?
Yep I'm getting that too. I used to get a single strange character (perhaps a Yen) but now I get a string of characters which make it look like the price is huge sometimes.
 14. Where is this mp3 you speaketh of?
 15.
I tend to log in when a participated thread has been replied to, now i have to log in to find out if a thread has had a new reply. Thats not ideal and i cant think of any other web forum that i use that works like that. Other than to post ive been reading this thread via the emails as there seems no need to keep coming on here to read the replies. Still, not the end of the world but i think it might put a few people off or mean that some people might take days to reply to a thread.
But reading the notifications in my in-box isn't ideal either as 1 thing that bugs me about the new notification system is that when my Gmail groups the "conversations" per member, it puts that members replies out of sync with other people in the thread conversation who may have only left one reply. Speed is good. Well done lads.
 16.
Sorry to be a dissenting voice, but this site just isn't working for me. I am getting so many notifications that I'm just bulk deleting them unread (just zapped another 132) and haven't got a clue what's going on anymore. It's taking me upwards of 40 seconds to load a page then the same again If I want to post a reply (even on a 5600Kbps ADSL link). The upgrade itself seems to have been performed smoothly by the BC tech guys, but the product itself leaves a bit to be desired... I'm going to jump ship for a little while and pop back in a week or two and see if things work any better.
I feel exactly the same buddy. I've bulk deleted god knows how many unread replies in the last few days (I even lost a couple of PMs because the notifications look so similar now) because I haven't the time to check each individual reply (literally 100s per day - and that's with weeding out the spurious notifications) plus with the waiting involved of late it feels like some sort of insidious torture. .... and now the euphoria of the new look has subsided, somehow the expanse of white is giving me a kind of monitor snow-blindness, where I don't want to look at it anymore. New themes please. I'm still having problemss with browser compatibility. New symtoms include - the spellchecker is duplicating letters and removing spaces ??? . Most of this I can live with for now but the notifications system is driving me crazy. This is my 1st post today - Fingers crossed about the speed issues.
 17. ...and no crust. Poor love.
 18.
Well, i guess i may be the only one, but this site is now so slow loading pages, that its become a complete frustration. The previous site pages loaded in a flash, and there was nowt wrong with it from my own POV.
Nah you're not the only one. I'm sure it'll be fine in a couple of days though.
 19.
Hardly a mention of Dark Side of the Moon. Its still the one Floyd album i can listen to at any time and keep going back to. It's almost 40 yrs old now and its still a contender for greatest album of all time. Animals was another great album that seems to get overlooked by many. I haven't managed to get into the solo stuff from Roger - can't explain why as i'm not specifically a Floyd officianado as such. I just liked the music. Dave
I think DSOTM is the one that goes in the "goes without saying " file. It's their most successful and well know album and there's little else you can add to that. Animals is my 2nd most favourite. It's very dynamic album with ups and downs, heavy parts, softs parts, sheep.. er... cough.. did I just say sheep?
 20.
Ouch I love that album. Yeah, it's Rog solo, but it's his best solo album... even if he does owe John Prine a few quid in royalties:
That's... er... uncanny. I really like it but I find The Final Cut hasn't aged all that well. The Pros and Cons has a more timeless feel to it and it's easier to connect with the storyline more. With Amused to Death in second place... Poignant as always....
 21. It's a darned pity the front doesn't look as spectacular as the back.
 22.
No one mentioned Syd yet??? One of the true geniuses of English songwriting, until he fried his brain. (used to live just up the road from me in Cambridge too) All Floyd is sublime and quite unique, but post Rog it was rather like "Wings" after "Beatles" - melodic, but the guts and heart had gone. At the Live8 thing it was quite a contrast to see how much better Rog has aged (physically) compared to Dave too.
The Syd stuff doesn't do it for me I'm afraid - although credit due, his early input undoubtedly gave the band direction. In the main I find the psychedelic stuff from "Syd's" Floyd too much of a head nip... there are a few exceptions of course but I prefer the more "musical" post Syd stuff.
 23.
The Director's cut is widescreen, has different title cards introducing the songs, and has a few new shots inserted of moonscapes and other 'atmospheric' images. The songs are also interspersed with footage of the band recording Dark Side at Abbey Road. Nick Mason loves his fruit pie but really doesn't want an end piece.
I think the Directors Cut contains over-dubs to the Pompeii stuff.... or is mixed differently.
 24.
Interesting point, though Rog was the one who left and then got miffed when the others just carried on without him - which was hardly surprising really, so surely Rog would have thought of that option? Who made the best new stuff after the split? I guess we could discuss that one until the cows come home, though I remember seeing Rog's Radio Kaos at Wembley many years ago and was not exactly overwhelmed. Personally, I reckon their best stuff was when they were together - as is so often the case when groups split but carry on separately. If I was forced to choose just one album I'd go for Wish You Were Here. I'd be really miffed that Echoes wasn't on it though!
It wasn't so much that he left the band, I think Waters decided to end it expecting (in his arrogance) that the band to split without him. I also believe that the other 3 were so frustrated at his level of involvement and self appointed control that they simply allowed him to go without argument. WYWH is my first port of call too.
 25.
Ah i have the video with the pie and the Dark Side recordings. Also has the little sibilance argument! I also thought Roger came across really well in the interviews, he's always been an eloquent speaker and seems to have mellowed a little! I like Radio Kaos and Amused to Death, the snippets i heard of another album (the name escapes me) he played at the NEC a few years ago were good too. Never liked Floyd without him, sounds like over-produced 80s tripe and hasn't aged well at all, whereas Waters-Floyd still sounds fantastic. Maybe i'm a little biased as i've always liked the old goat!
I wouldn't say I never liked Dave's Floyd (I just listen to it less) but I'm pretty much in sync with you on this. I found that when they made the decision in the 80's to produce song albums rather than concept albums it kind of detracted from what I liked about Floyd. My period of excellence would be from Atom Heart Mother to Animals. I over-played The Wall during my "drugy years" and find it hard to dip into so much now and The Final Cut is basically a Waters album at his self-indulgent best about his dad... and the Torries. I've found all of Roger's solo stuff very listen-able and profound. The Pros and Cons is particularly good (the one you were looking for ) The depths to which he tells a story in so few words is almost unequalled. I also find Dave's early solo stuff very enjoyable too.
