1. I've seen these for sale in Urban Outfitters and I was very intrigued by their uses! Might consider picking one up myself if someone on here can give a positive recommendation Danny
2. I've never taken a spare bass or amp to a gig, it's just extra hassle really! A more useful option would be to take some basic tools (soldering iron, pliers, screwdriver etc) and if something goes wrong you have most of your bases covered, bar a freak accident! As has been said above, you can always just DI to the PA if your amp fails too.
3. Always get your drummer to count into a song, be it on sticks or just in the air with mimed numbers. Always let the drummer decide when to end a song. Watch him very carefully for that final cymbal crash to wrap the song up! Wedge a spare plectrum loosely in between the scratchplate and body (if your bass has a pickguard that is) for those dropping moments When soundchecking, play as hard as you can so the soundman can set your channel to a gain level that won't distort later in the set (when most players naturally dig in more) Also regarding soundcheck - play your open strings one at a time in a drone fashion before starting on a noodley line, this makes it much easier for the soundman to set his EQ's When other band members ask you to turn down on stage, a slight attenuation of the bass knob frequencies will often fool him into thinking you have
4.
I was asking because I have a theory that Ashdowns rep for wooliness is due to their 1x15 cabs.
Too true. My ABM 2x10 combo doesn't suffer from this at all thankfully!
5.
I've posted this before, and I'll post it again. Ian Murray of Jack the Lad.
I smirk every time you post that link WoT - what a GREAT tune!
6. I own a similar combo to you, and I've always assumed that - Out = Pre EQ In = Post EQ Some of the buttons on the amp are quite confusing like that, but because Pre EQ is generally the accepted standard for DI'ing I presume that they've went the logical route by keeping the button in the Out position.
7. Mine is a little woofy at the minute in the low end (I'm currently using a hollowbody McCartney bass copy), but I have a feeling that adding a compressor to my signal chain might resolve this. Any thoughts?
8. I was just listening to some old Rage albums yesterday actually (going to see them live next week yeoww!) and Tim Commerford's tone is really superb.
9. Interesting idea! Can you still get the trademark MM sound out of it though?
10. Hello all, I'm going to replace the preamp valve in my ABM500 combo to spruce it up a little! Has anyone performed such an operation in the past? If so, what valve did you use, and would you recommend it? Cheers guys! Danny
11. Sounds like hell! Join a new band with people who are as keen as you to get out and play gigs. No point in wasting any more time IMO!
12. Thanks guys, both sound great! I may well order both and see which suits my needs best. Danny
13. Hello all, I've just joined a Beatles tribute band which means that I'll finally be able to put my lovely Beatbass to good use! Can anyone recommend a good set of short scale strings for it? The ones on it at the moment have been there since I bought it, and before I start gigging I feel they need a change. I've never bought strings for anything other than 34" scale length basses, and this one is 30", so I'm a little nervous about buying some that'll fit properly. Flatwounds would also be a bonus (if they're not a complete impossibility that is!) Thanks in advance for any advice guys! Danny
14. Wow, some lovely basses there! What's with the 'HiMass' bridges though? I know they can be easily changed for something a bit better, but they do take away from the vintage vibe somewhat.
15. Hello all, So I bought a soldering iron and some solder with the intention of putting together a new passive circuit for my Jazz Bass. I have the diagrams and all the parts too, so basically it's a complete set that just needs some DIY! However, when I tried to solder the components together, I was lost! I did some basic soldering in school many years ago, and remember it being a lot easier than this! The solder didn't stick to the pots or components and I ended up de-soldering everything and taking it apart again out of worry that I'd mess the components up. Has anyone else had the same dilemma? Any advice or tips? I'm considering getting the circuit soldered by a local electronics expert, but the satisfaction of doing it myself and learning a new skill is also a big part of it for me. Thanks in advance! Danny
16.
does it sound the same with the tube switch in and out?
Yes, same problem! When I turn the amp on, the little gain dial lights up as normal. However, it only actually picks up the level of the bass signal once every minute or so, then cuts again (ie the needle moves) Any ideas? Will email Ashdown now. Thanks so far guys! Danny
17. Hello all, I picked up an Ashdown ABM 2x10 Combo last week second hand off a guy in England, and it didn't arrive in perfect condition! When I turn the amp on, the fan starts, the gauge lights up, but at best I get a farty, broken up sound when the Gain and Master Volume controls are even turned up slightly. Has anyone had similar problems with Ashdown? Any suggestions as to a course of action? Thanks in advance, Danny
18. Nordstrand make a pickup for your needs, as discussed in THIS thread! Hope this helps Danny
19. SM58 for me, but I sang through one of those Sennheiser Mics recently at a gig (not sure of the model number) and it sounded great!
20.
What's going on with the tape on the pick ups here...
Good question! I'd love to see a Who tribute band, having seen the original band a few times and always feeling that my ears don't hurt as much as they should afterwards
21. +1 on what has been said about buying a 70's Fender unplayed, although it is a lovely looking bass! Very Paul Simonon.
22. Wow, I'd definitely buy that! I spent 6 months perfecting the famed live WGFA (the Shepperton Studios one), and a book like this would have saved me a lot of time! Most of his live stuff, especially towards the end of his life would be hard to transcribe though. I'd stay away from the periods where he used that horrible distorted synth sound, but then again that's just my own preference! Some tracks that I'd include in addition to the ones you mentioned - The Ox A Quick One (While He's Away) Call Me Lightning The Kids Are Alright Sparks Pinball Wizard Substitute Heaven and Hell 5:15 Baba O'Riley Success Story Who Are You Trick Of The Light The Quiet One You So many....can you write 2 books?
23. Someone on this forum once posted a pic of 3 or 4 Antigua Fenders, and I drooled for weeks! However, as WoT says, it's all about the pickguard really. Not for me at all!
24. I assume this is closer to the 84 spec than the 64, as it's overwound?
