  1. After looking around on the internet for a while and thinking properly about what sort of cab designs I liked, I settled on a variation of the Purple Chili style. Two colours with binding inbetween! Play my cards right, It could lovely and retro, just the sort of vibe I'm after. After speaking to Ou7shined briefly, I got in contact with a company called Solsound who are a supplier of tolex and general cab/amp/guitar parts. I'll not spoil the surprise, look at the pretty pictures! Stage 1 - Dirty brown Fender-style tolex Stage 2 - Binding (friendly advice; for gods sake... buy a staple gun! Veneer pins are fine, but take f***ing ages!) Continued.... Truckstop
  2. So after finally managing to get all the sodding carpet off, I used several tools to remove the remnants of the glue and also stubborn bits of carpet off the cab. Namely a sort of mini-hand rasp type doodad and an electrical sanding machine (mini-sized). The glue proved stubborn and, much like the previous stage of getting the carpet off, it took f***ing ages. After giving it the once over with the heavy tools, I spent a while working throught various grades of sandpaper. The plan at this point was to simply varnish over the whole cab and make a new oxblood speaker grille. I'd seen this combination before and thought it looked great so thought I'd try it myself. Save me loads of money and effort too! Unfortunately after about 8 hours sanding I simply had to concede that the plywood just wouldnt be attractive enough for a 'natural' finish. (The stains on top were of spilled tea) So, at this point needed to have a little think! I busied myself making a speaker grille frame while deciding what sort of finish I should go for. I like building things, it makes me happy! Truckstop
  3. So, first job is to take it apart (sensibly of course), test the electrical components and strip the carpeting off of it. Grille off: And then getting the carpet off. A terrible job that took f***ing ages! Lots of swearing, smoking, scraped knuckles and broken spatulas later, we arrive at this: Looking good! Truckstop
  4. Hello all, So about a month ago while clearing out my fiancees garage, I came across an old Carvin cab that I used to keep at an old rehearsal space. Great cab, but when the band folded I simply didnt have a need for it and so it found its way into a garage somewhere near St. Albans; untouched, unused...unloved. And here it is: As you can see, a complete mess. The speaker clearly rotting away, the carpet shabby, mouldy and damp. The carpet on the underside of the cab nearly falling away, the speaker grille and the screws all rusty and the inside of the port filled with spiders webs. Electrics probably shot and the plastic handles and jack plate weak and brittle. A truly sorry state, not befitting a cab of such great promise and history. So, a plan forms: 1 - Strip it 2 - New speaker 3 - Re-Finish 4 - Blast! Read on.... Truckstop
  5. Lovely! I think brass bridges are amazing. They look sophisticated, they sound great and add a little bit of weight which I find comforting. Truckstop
  6. Oh god yeah I love his solos. Personal favourite is 'Lords of Destruction' off 1919 Eternal (great album by the way if you like biker metal) and also love his solo on 'Once More' off Hangover Music Vol.4. It's just so inappropriate, but so good! Truckstop
  7. Ooh, that sounds ideal thank you! Looks like it's a trip to B&Q in the morning then! Cheers Alex
  8. Interesting.... Cheers guys, will settle on something in the morning! Nearest DIY's only 5 miles away Truckstop
  9. Well Zakk Wylde (oh, he of the inappropriate solo) plays his guitars almost vertical when soloing so that probably works quite well for him! But yeah it's a complete disaster. Truckstop
  10. Hello all, I've sorted myself out with a day off tomorrow and I'm gonna spend the day recovering my cab (don't worry, there will be a proper build diary when it's all done)! Because it's a bit of a surprise to get the day off, I've not yet bought the adhesive for the tolex! Anyone know where I can go out and get some in the morning? Ordering it in's not an option because I want to work on it tomorrow innit Cheers Alex
  11. Gotta be a bargain for £200!! Truckstop
  12. Gil Yaron has the most extreme OCD ever. And is a genius! Truckstop
  13. Congratulations mate! I'm also saving for a wedding Truckstop
  14. Ooh, love the jazz! How much they set you back altogether? Truckstop
  15. ^ +1 Nice and stiff and comfy to grip. Truckstop
  16. My band do the end bit from The Chain as a sort of intro and then straight into Wishing Well. Seems to go down pretty well and it's fun. Truckstop
  17. Same here, I thought I played terribly last night but no-one else in the band noticed and got the usual generic platitudes from the punters. I dunno, maybe I just wasnt feeling the vibe last night? Been a busy week I suppose, looking back. Anyway, played at The Rose on King's Road in Maidenhead. Lovely pub and lovely Landlady/Landlord, but I never want to play there again. The band area is a corridor down the side of the bar and away from the open area of the pub. So, being a corridor (I exaggerate only slightly) we were literally playing in a line facing the opposite wall. Right next to the toilets and the door to the smoking area so constantly having to twist and turn to let these people past. Uncomfortable, badly paid but sounded great. Truckstop
  18. I think the duo should buy their own little PA, and then the band should buy their own bigger PA. How large a venue are the duo playing that they need a PA suitable for a full band? Yeah the singer and the guitarist will end up spending more money, but it's another band innit. Separate from the main band so it's only righ they should own their own gear. As per everyone else, all spend an equal amount as is possible and then claim it back when the band folds at the current value of the gear. Truckstop
  19. Ah i didn't know that. From a personal perspective I wouldn't choose it then. I prefer multiple speakers for effects. Oh well! Truckstop
  20. First, I'd buy a gig bag for the bass that has a pocket big enough for a micro-head. Ashdown MiBass for example and can be carried on your back. IGiG will be perfect, or a protec contego is also an excellent product. Next, an Orange Isobaric 2x10 is plenty loud enough and IS the most compact 2x10 you'll find anywhere. You can carry this in one of your hands. And your pedalboard in the other hand! You mentioned that you use quite a few effects probably mounted on a board so you need a free hand for that innit. Even if the Bareface Super12 is lightweight, it's still a pain in the arse for one trip from the car, though loads of doors, up twisty stairs etc due to it's size. The OP says he also has use of PA support. Simply, he doesn't need a Super12. I'd agree that Barefaced is the way to go because they are cool, but a Midget should be fine. All of the micro heads mentioned in this thread have DI's so why a big cab? Why 12's? Does the OP have a sansamp/bdi21 etc? These can be use to dial in plenty of grit for you if the tone of the head you isn't quite perfect for you. This pedal can be easily affixed to ones pedalboard or can be placed carefully in a pocket of your awesome new gigbag! Truckstop
  21. Once went to see Ackercocke and in between songs this tool kept shouting "LOUDER! FASTER!" Never laughed so hard in my life. Even the band had to crack a smile. Truckstop
  22. Please dont let it go for that money. Take it with you and try and sell it in a year or so. It's so cheap it makes babies cry, just hang on to it! If I had the cash, I'd have grabbed it two weeks ago Anyway, whatever you choose to do, good luck! Truckstop
  23. Oh, I thought this was going to be a thread about Stevie Ray Vaughns greatest song But oh well, yes I agree. Denmark street is a shadow of its former self. Worth a visit just to have a few beers at the Intrepid Fox. Might see someone famous! Truckstop
  24. Just received Gus' EHX Multiplexer through the post and couldn't be happier sitting here with the floor rumbling and the windows shaking, dogs barking and the neighbours banging on the walls! Anyway, Gus is just super. He sent the pedal without even knowing if the money had got into hid account yet, so cheers mate! I'm glad I've got it before the weekend! Alex
  25. Bass effects nearly always sound better in a band context. Especially fuzz! Truckstop edit: And it depends on how effective your rig is at reproducing the sound for you. Through earphones, the effects of my ME20 sound weak; playing live with my full rig on 11, they sound immense!
