Okey doke, PM coming your way! Cheerz Alex

I've been listening to nothing but LD50 for the past few days, such a good album! I just can't work out why their albums since are comparatively weak. Truckstop

Hello all, Want to get wubbing, what synths are good for use with an expression pedal? Boss SYB look good and readily available but it'd be nice to get something a little more 'outside the box' so to speak! I already have an expression (M-Audio, if that means anything?) and I've got up to £70 to spend. I already have a synth on my Boss ME20b, but they're not expression compatible and they sound pretty weak in my opinion. Just sounds like a mix of distortion and auto-wah! The synths on the ME20b are also on the same patch as the overdrive which I like using. Thanks for any help peeps! Truckstop

Maybe re-write the solo section so that there's not an immediate jump into it? So play the song, and bring it down a little for the solo and then outro? Truckstop

Why not a "Cult Bass" section? Maybe someone does in impartial review of stuff like Peavey T-40's, Ibanez Blazers/Musicians/Roadsters etc, SB Nanyo Bass Collection's etc and see how they stack up against modern instruments at the same price point? Not everyone can afford new instruments, so a review of some of the classic (now affordable) vintage instruments could be useful! Cheers and kudos for opening yourself to criticism and suggestions here! Alex

I aswell! Bloody love the guy. His sound is always impeccable and his sheer skill level really made me up my game I was a spotty bassist in school 10 years ago. I always wondered how he got an almost fretless tone. Any ideas what his rig was on LD50? Truckstop

We're looking at £1,500 minimum for a 5-piece. Reason being I and another band member work in the pub business and we'd need at least £250 each to make it worth travelling out. Otherwise I could just work in the pub and earn £200 anyway and be able to drink with all my buddies. Truckstop

I like to set mine at 4mm, I have a robust playing style and I also like to press down on the frets rather than giving them a feather touch. Feels weird that way! Truckstop

The Protec Contego, the Mono cases and the iGiG bags are probably the best (or rather theey're the ones that cost the most and name artists use them). As soon as I get a few quid together I'm grabbing a double! Truckstop

Impressive! The only musicians I can think of that I'd be able to recognise would be Mark Knopfler (who couldn't recognise his style?!) and Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne bassist who has a very distinctive sound and playing style). The problem with recognising musicians is that over the course of a few albums, the whole bands style and sound changes which makes it a bit harder! I could maybe recognise a couple more guitarists from the solo style; Mikael Akerfeldt springs to mind. Truckstop

Singer is flat, broaching the subject...

Yeah, just suggest he get a few lessons. Make up some excuse like "you look like your breathing's out", "maybe learn some exercises to stop losing your voice at the end of the set?" etc etc Any decent tutor should point out his pitch issues and also iron out some other vocal problems too! I've done a couple of dep gigs for a local party band (Pontins, Prestatyn and Butlins, Minehead) and enjoyed myself both times. Just got involved with all the games and stuff for the kids, had a stroll around and watched some football matches and stuff. There is a lot of waiting around and you can't pack up for a while after you've finished. Both times I played the band were given apartments and some free booze which helped. Anyway, got paid £200 both times for an hour set and rest of the band implied that their cut was substantially bigger. As long as you can get past all the pissed up parents and screaming kids, it's good fun! Don't forget, you're there to entertain people! Do some silly dances ad pull some funny faces while you're playing and have some fun! Truckstop
Yeah it was a shame you couldn't make it Truckstop, I was really looking forward to trying out a Blazer Thanks for letting me know you couldn't make it though! Hope the van is all sorted now... Is it kinda ironic that your "truck" stopped working?
Ha ha, yes the irony is not lost on me! PM me your bank details, I'll send some money for you, it's not fair that you should have to stump up for it all! Alex

Cheers mate, I think that these aren't really worth enough to keep original so I think they're fair game for a little revamp. After all, it's the tone that matters, right? Truckstop

Yeah the necks have a D-ish profile and I'd say the width is somewhere between a P and J. So smaller than a P, more chunky than a J. Great basses. Collecting a Roadster tomorrow off Jigster. Can't bloody wait! Truckstop

Hmm, that's a tricky question to answer. Personally I think they look better. Especially the headstock. You're guaranteed excellent build quality and excellent standard of materials. They tend to be on the heavy side (mine are 9 and 10lbs respectively) but I prefer heavy basses anyway. Tone-wise it's hard to describe. Massive dubby lows with the tone rolled off, but still plenty of definition; with the tone rolled on all the way, you're into Ricky-like clankiness, but with more aggressiv mids. Blazers get quite growly, perhaps more so than a 'regular' P, but I suppose it depends on what sort of strings you like. Thanks to the magic bridges, Blazers have tonnes of sustain, I mean a silly amount. A well struck string will ring for ages and will ring as clear as a bell. Thanks to their passiveness, they respond really well to effects, especially with octaves. With the tone off, clear sub tones; with the tone on, aggressive distorted sounding synth. I like using all kinds of fuzzes, overdrives and distortions with Blazers because with the tone rolled on all the way, you can rein in the effect, and use the natural growliness of the bass carry the distortion. This way you dont lose any of the natural bassiness of the instrument which sometimes a lot of other basses lose. Especially passives. Hopefully that makes sense. I'm not gonna say that these are better than Fenders or whatever. I simply prefer their tone, their looks and I like the fact that they're all nice and old and dusty but still sound great. Best sub £200 basses I reckon. On a serious note, I think that fit and finish equals that of USA Fenders and they sound just as good. Maybe lacking as much balls (you'd need to upgrade the pickups if you want a real Fender-killer) but just as articulate and as classic sounding. Truckstop

Yeah Im gutted I couldnt make it after having a great time last year! Bloody van broke down on the way back from Prestatyn this morning and it just wasnt worth me leaving for the Bash at 2.30pm. Gutted Oh well, I hope everyone had a good time and I want to see some photos! Truckstop

Ooh, I was after that one on ebay. Potentially a bastard to renovate so decided to make a low bid. But yeah, blazers are amazing. I honestly think I'd be happy enough to never buy another bass again! Truckstop

Oh bugger, i wish I'd paid attention! I bid £51! Truckstop
