1. +1 - I love mine (sheps old one) to bits and I've barely scratched the surface. Best thing about this is that despite the complexity it just WORKS live. GLWTS
2. Finally getting around to clearing out a few pedals that I'm just not using any more. All great but either superceded or just not part of my set up. Digitech whammy Mint condition, might still have the box too. Comes with power supply. Gimp fx fat boy Great dirtbox but it's not my type of dirt. Best descriptions of tone controls ever. Myrtle distortion Not sure who makes these but the two really important facts are 1 it has a picture of a spider on 2 it's more savage than a savage thing that someone's been winding up every day for two weeks. 50 plus shipping for the whammy (it's heavier and I'm not sure how much it'll cost to post), 50 including postage for either of the other two. Bargain!
3. Just to be clear it's not fitted with an OBP3 - it has a Gregory preamp apparently. I've no previous experience of these but it sounds just fine to my ears - link is here http://gregorypreamps.com/ and it looks like they are a Polish firm which I guess makes sense with the Mayones....
4. Yes, the controls are vol, pan, bass, mids, treble in that order. The vol is a push/pul to engage or disengage the EQ. The switch is a mystery. When I first saw the bass I guessed coil tap as well but it doesn't appear to do anything and the previous owner was equally at a loss. I've not taken the back off the bass to investigate further as, tbh, it sounds just fine all set flat! Perhaps it is a subtle Mwahhh booster
5. Scale length is a smidge over 34" - call it 34 1/4. I took a few other measurements for another enquiry: Width is 55mm at the nut and 88mm at the 24th fretline. Neck is 20mm deep at the 12th fretline. Spacing is 17.5mm at the bridge, 9mm at the nut. Hope that's of help.
6. You could have it immediately! Sorry - I would say around 10lbs, it's very close to my Dolphin which I know to be a shade over 9lbs. If you need me to be more precise let me know and I will do a proper weigh in!
7. So having really needed a fretless bass, and then having navigated some problems with the shipping (previous seller Janek was an absolute star), I'm having to concede that 6 strings is just too much for me on a fretless bass. I never saw that coming - extra strings for me are usually like roast potatoes on sunday lunch, you can't have enough. In this case it seems five roast potatoes is my maximum. I'm happy to sell it and it's priced at what I paid for it (includes an MBT hardcase), ideally though I would prefer to trade for a fretted 6 string. 34 or 33 scale, 18mm spacing max. A bit of cash could move either way. It's in Norwich if you want to try it out. Details are: Ash body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard, bartolini pickups, Gregory preamp, schaller tuners and bridge. Currently set with a low action - it was super low when I received so anyone wanting a fretless with a very light touch would be ok with this bass. Spacing is 17.5mm, I believe the bridge will adjust but I've not investigated this myself as the spacing was fine as is. Overall I've found this to be a great fretless, I would keep it if I could feel at home with the extra string, no question. Janek - I hope you don't mind but I've used you pics - they are better than the ones I shot today plus there are some nice shots of girls in football gear in some which I think add to the appeal of the bass. Cheers, Abd
8. Bump for a superb bass - GLWTS Nick
9. Don't think so. I was looking at this one via bassgear, great bass by all accounts. Looks like a nice job done of good ingredients!
10. My condolances in respect of said passed equine. Sadly I just can't justify this right now but I would absolutely endorse everything said about Pete Skjold here. I was stupid enough to sell my whaleback 6 but it was an exceptional bass and Pete's time and support by email and phone are second to none (I hadn't even bought the bass new). He is definately a premier builder with a profile much lower than perhaps it should be. This will no doubt be a great instrument and anyone looking for a modern J bass in this price range could do much much worse IMO. Glwts
11. All, I've no affiliation with this person but a stolen basschat.co.uk is never good news, please keep your eyes open... https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10152295874271571&id=730871570&comment_id=10152295874591571&ref=m_notif&notif_t=comment_mention&actorid=730871570
12. Janek is a great guy to deal with. He's a good communicator and replies promptly which I always feel helps any trades go smoothly. I've just bought his mayones fretless from him and whilst UPS messed us around a little I never had any concerns about the outcome of the deal. The bass arrived in immaculate condition, first class packing. Janek is also very generous with his time sharing info about his bass playing experiences. Overall an asset to the forum and another BCer how you can confidently deal with.
13. Great stuff - more bass madness!! Dood - is this the one with the string spacing where you can't get a fag paper between them? Very nice bass, sounds like steal at this price - almost worth it just for the parts...?
14.
Also, I no longer have that black leather sofa...
The end of an era!!
15. For anyone interested in this bass Janek is a great guy and top seller - deal with confidence!
16.
Maybe you need to stop obsessing about trying to find a perfect solution and simply enjoy playing what you do have access to.
Ok guys, I get the message, only asked the question!
17. Folks thanks for the feedback. Obviously this is a really subjective issue but lot's of useful food for thought here.
18. Good advice and I suspect very close to the truth. Any other schools of thought folks?
19. Very interested to hear the BC thoughts on this, I'm sure many of you are in or have been in this boat. Simply put, is it worth selling up the collection in order to fund one high quality instrument? I find myself with the dilema of trying lot's of different basses all with their own qualities but never finding that one bass that hits the 8 or 9 out of 10 mark consistently on all fronts. Some of the sorts of choices that need to be made are: 1) Fretted or frettless - this of all the choices is probably easiest as you can't really have one bass that does both for obvious reasons 2) B string - good for general/function work. Wider neck reduces playabilty, more bass to get around. Seems to 'ground' the tone where present. 3) C string - good for improvisation, chords etc. Not widely desired but the non-bass playing world in general. Same neck issues as point 2. Doesn't always work on a 5 string. 4) 6 or more strings - see 2 and 3. 5) Wood choices - does it really all boil down to ash/maple? The exotics look great but does it really make difference from the back of the bar? 6) Pickups/electrics etc - black magic and probably influenced by other factors. Keep it flat and clean or is there a good colour to go for? 7) Scale length - how do you know that a 33 is going to work well? Are there any 35s that are genuinely comfortable to play or is it the simple truth that 34 is the best scale length for bass (provocative perhaps!) I think a key thing for me is that the bass responds and resonates really well to being played. This might sound a bit daft but there are some instruments which just seem for whatever reason to invite you to play them and this usually translates for me into better tone and performance. I suspect the quality of the set up, frets and neck have a lot to do with this. More mysterious X factors. What makes the bass that you instinctively choose to use whatever the circumstances? I've met people over the years who will say get a custom bass made. Sounds like a good idea but I've no idea what ingrediants to tell the chef to buy. I've also no desire to let my mind change itself over the 12-24 months most of these builds seem to take. I suspect that the answer to this question is that there is no one bass to rule them all and that some form of bass coalition needs to be formed in order to succesfully govern all gigs. Question is probably more around who gets to be PM.... Interested in your thoughts BC folk!! Cheers, Abd
20. Is it a single coil in the neck position - looks like to HB? Anyway, great bass, I always like the look of this and can't figure out why it can't find a happy home. Best of Alan's designs IMO. GLWTS
