2.
Hi all, I'm thining of supplementing/replacing my rig with a modelling rig with the Line6 Bass Pod XT at the center. To do this successfully I'd like to buy a flat/uncoloured cab and I'm looking for suggestions. I've heard of people using Mackie SRM450 PA speakers but I'm concerned they wouldn't handle the low end. I know there are the usual ACME/ACCUGROOVE suggestions to consider, but getting an ACME is awkward (importing) and ACCUGROOVE are prohibitively expensive at the minute. I'm really looking for something cheap to check that it'll all work well. Any ideas folks? Cheers Ian
something flat and uncolured, go for something white from ikea, they are always flat

4.
Have i done the right thing? Bring it on!
er no don't know why though, geuss it's karma, don't know whos though
5. gonna say what i have said before but there seems to be a down trend in problems with ashy stuff, maybe just maybe there were a few teething prblems with the contract change. but to be honest most manufactureres are going to send out dogs occasionally. mine is fine. does the job, if it goes wrong so be it, i'll get it fixed. electrical equipment will on occasions fail, much like some peopel will fall over dead before most think they should, ce la vie.
6. the line 6 combos do, but they are a bit pants to be honest, and along with all the other stuff crammed in there for the price i didnt trust it. better to get a seperate one, not that expensive. in the end its just another thing to go worng in an amp. i got a cheap one for abotu 15 quid, does the job and if it brakes my amp is still ok.
7. the midrange projection was alot better, no noticeable falloff over distance (although to be honest i didn't walk too far away as my lead aint that long) and we set up on the floor in the middle of the hall (over 7 feet away from the walls) and the low end was nice and tight, not so boomy. had to adjust the eq just cos of the change of the midrange. the perception of lost low end is cos we can hear the mids much clearer, and they cut through, the bass is still there cos when i was stood next to the amp it was happily rumbling away. this setup will benifit from adding a 1x15 just to boost the lows. be interesting to see how this all works in a live situation and how the audience hear it, not got a gig for ages now though so that test will be a while. but thanks again to alex and bill.
8. just to report back, stuck my combo on its side and apart from looking odd and getting some funny looks from the band it worked a treat. more punch everything was clearer and more defined and in all seemed louder cos i had to turn it down, vu meter still worked fine and i had to tweak my eq a bit cos of the slight sound change but all in all very good. the mid range really did project and the lower end seemed a bit tighter but that may just be me. so if you have a 2x10 or 2x12 or 2xwhatever stick it on its side and enjoy.
9. Got it at the delmar and It's cool to hang out with your ex - Sensless things Woodpecker from mars _ Faith no more, pretty much the whole song is the bass solo. Keep on running - Spencer Davis Group, again integral bass line anything by Primus, Sausage, Holy Mackerel Naked in the rain - RHCP Mudvayne - Dig
10. our last gig, we turned up at our practice hall to load all our pa and drum gear etc into the cars, we have to go round the back to do this, the drummers car goes in first folled by the rythmn guitarists, whcih on attempting to turn round to reverse up to the back do blows a tyre, turns out the anti roll bar on the front of his car has sheared off from the wishbone mounts and caught i the side of the tyre ripping a very large hole (lucky it wasn't on the M11 at 70mph!!) anyway we proceed to jack the car up only to find the jack isn't long enough to get the wheel off (big 4x4 this car) so we then let it down put a parge paving slab under there and then have a long discussion about what is the actual jacvk point on the car as it's not marked anywhere and then come to the conclusion its normally near the side of the car adn the first place we jacked it on didn't look too hot, start jacking it again and then just to make things worse the place onthe side of the car where we are jscking it collaspses pushing out the body work, brilliant!! i now want to crawl into the ground. we finally resort to the first jack point which works chage the wheel and pack the cars up. the guitarist obviously want to get hte tyre sorted and the roll bar so we head off to dartford tyres, which the drummer doesn't know is not in dartford, we phone him to find out where he has gone as we have just been told by the bloke at the tyre place that a) he doesn't have the tyre in stock and the car is seriously dangerous in its current state and should not be driven (we have to get to a village near the wwash in lincolnshire) but the drummers phone has gone dead and he has gon awol. the guitarist has to get a caroff his daughter and repack everything form that into his and the lead guitarists car who has now turned up. we fianlly get on the road after tracking down the drummer 3.5 hours later than we should have done, fortunately we had planned on getting there early but only just had enough time to set up and sound check. not relising the idea of going back up there again and i havent heard from teh guitarist since
11. basically if they have stated that it will work in their literature then they should uphold that in some way, clearly what they have sold you does not do what they have claimed it can do, brochures and their literature content have to be signed off by the company (trace in this case) before they can go to print, and as you are the first person to notice this or at least the first one to contact them (which i would find amazing) you should be in a good position to get a decent solution, which if i were you would be to push to switch the whole lot out for a 2x10 combo and 115 cab. this is why i bought the ashdown 2x10 combo cos i then new it would sit on top of the 115 cab due to the differnt cab depths (also the 115 combo is not as wide as the cabs either which would look really funny) hope they sort this for you considering how much the trace stuff costs.
12.
Mike. I have tried all sorts of picks over the years although like i said ive not gone over 1.2mm before. The Claytons will be here tomorrow so ill give them a try. Funny thing though is that i always thought it was the lighter picks that gave a softer attack (as well as a click). Guess there is no substitute for learning to play properly ;-). I always practice at home with my fingers only, too lazy to go and get a pick out of the other room most of the time but because i sit down at the PC to do this I find it harder to do it standing up at a gig. And yes, i could stand up at home but would feel rather silly as my PC is in the living room.
hmm i always found the lighter picks to give a scratchy flicky sound, the thicker ones more of a pluck found this, i think these were the ones but the heavy or very heavy
13. dave, have you tried the picks that have a rounded edge rather than the sharp edged ones (that do eventually round off) the ones i used to use were pretty thick, probably about 1.9 or something and they had a nice rounded edge so less toppy, sorry can't remember the make but they were tortoise shell and pretty big though i don't use the pick no more. the best sound i ever had was doing a gig in a larger back garden, we were set up on the patio, so on solid thick paving slabs, the sound was sooo tight and clear though it did dissappear up the garden pretty quick, maybe try taking some heavy slabs with you and put the cab on them
14. damn alex got in there first on that, but yeah do em verytically, also with the 2 you will have one up by your lugholes so it will sound clearer on stage do they do them in 8ohm versions?
15. didn't watch must of the live earth thing but yeah its annoying when you are trying to see what they are doing, again pino at glastonbury for example. of the liveearth thing that i did watch i noticed that one of the P basses that the bassist in fall out boy had was a Squire, very strange to see a budget bass on the big stage.
16.
Your combo is basically the same configuration arrived at by Leo Fender in the late 1950s. The side by side 2x was used because it looked better than a cabinet high enough for the drivers to fit vertically. The fact that it was patently wrong to do so was never considered by Leo, because he was not an audio engineer and didn't know it was wrong. It continues to be the most popular configuration because the average customer isn't an audio engineer either.
completely forgot i had posted on this, so sorry for not getting back to you. so thanks BFM and alexclaber, i havent got another practice for 2 weeks but i will give it a go at the next one though i do expect to get some funny looks from the guys but as you say it should work alot better. i'll report abck once i have tried it at volume. one otehr thing i will ask is will tipping it on its side affect the VU meter? yes i know alot of people say they don't work that well but mine seems to do a good job so will it being off its normal working plane will it give me funny readings? cheers again guys.
17. just looked on durdel and they have got a suire precision specail for $249 reduced from $415. worth a look
18. the advice to go and try lots of basses is always a good one, but as it is a first bass and i might assume from the post that Baseballfan hasn't played bass before that the prospect of going into a shop and trying out basses can be very daunting (it still is for me and i can play a little ) if you want to narrow it down you should really look at a Precision, a Jazz, a precision deluxe(its a sort of precision and jazz cross), definately take a look at ibanez bass's, SR's are very good as are the SRX's and you should be able to find one in your range. Also if you want to hear what they sound like but aren't confortable playing get someone in the shop to play them to you and then have a play aorund on the neck to see if it suits your hands.
19. another thing iwas wondering is would these boxes benifit from having some kind of padding/wadding applied to the inside? would it tightne the sound or just kill it? and what would you use. obviously doing it would be tricky as the only ways in are through the speaker holes and where the side handles are.
20.
The reviews I find do tend to air towards higher end gear - then again I don't get every issue and might be missing the budget reviews.
+1 that was one thing that puts me off buying it is that the gear is always well out of my league, some stuff for your average joe would be good particularly the amps, not to say there arne't any cheaper amps in there but they tend to be bedroom combos not something suitable for gigging, i tend to check it when its out on the shelves but haven't bought one in a while sorry.
21. i've seen mike patton a few times now and evry time has been jaw dropping, saw him with faith no more supportingguns and roses along side soundgarden at wembley, that was some gig, then saw FNM headline at brixton academy think that was on the angle dust tour and also saw Mr Bungle at Rockworld in manchester which was simply amazing, the things he can do with his voice defy me. he a really cool bungle clip live http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4rqXqpLCZ0
22.
Vox - Mike Patton Guitar - Tom Morello Bass - Chris Wolstenholme Drums - Mike Portnoy Can you imagine that line up?! G
ooooh! mike is quite possibly the greatest vocalist period. though that could work with les on bass
23. actually my wife has been a nightmare on the bay, and she picks up new or NIB stuff for some silly prices so i don't need any heads up on the shoe thing though it may prove a good leverage point unless she spends it all on shoes and theres nowt left for a bass. nice idea, BIN stuff isn't going to get bumped up because of interest though
24. i picked up my 2 band eq second hand for £650 (though twaas a long and long ago) so you should be able to get one fairly easy though you may have to look a bit further south say to manchester or along that way, of find one that can deliver, you pretty much know what you are going to get
25. ok here are a couple of interior pics of my mag, box is very solid even if is made of chip board and as can bee seen has a center brace front to back, the tweeter is boxed in at the top and there are a couple of shots of the speakers them selves, we all know what they look like from the front so heres the arse end
