1. ooooh, been after a PJ for a while and had major gas for one recently and number 3 (73/77) looks really sweet, must resist gas.... ....can't... how much?
2. oh i've been thinking of getting some lessons so i can improv a bit when playing live (you know when the guitarist gets carried away and plays past the change and you have to fill in with out getting too repetitive ) and learn scales etc so i dont get as lost on the board and as luck would have it i live in bexleyheath too
3. what about on coated strings like elixirs? would it effect the coating?
4. there are a bunch of videos by David dunn, ducks nephew, on youtube which highlight nicely his style. heres one such http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BRUaIHUhfw
5. play closer to the neck for that clicky sound (the strings move around more from playing there) also might want to have a look at Zon basses nice cutting tone ala faith no more and they played everything from blues through to thrash.
6. a mate of mine got a guitar for his birthday and i thought cool i'll get one and we'll start a band till he suggested i get a bass as i had big hands and we'd be better sorted to start a band that way. obviously band never got started and i just learnt some basics out of a beginners book got rapidly bored with that and bought some G'n'R tab books and promptly learnt their catalogue. after that couldnt be arsed to buy any more books and learnt stuff by ear. Played in a folk band at 18 that didnt have a bass player till i joined which then became a folk rock band , did 2 gigs then the singer/guitarist went weird and that stopped though learnt alot by righting my own lines.A few offers of starting bands came up but nothing ever happened and i continued playing along to songs i like the sound of, chilli's etc. then had to sell my bass stuff and then 8 years later my mate asked if i wanted to play bass in his covers band, in at the deep end learn these 30 songs and we'll do a gig type of thing, band still going with added songs. Would like to learn some theory but just dont have the time (or should that be patience) in fact if anyone can recommend some good things to know for blue/rock that would be good.
7. Thought i would add an update to this bit of kit what with it being over a year old now (has it really been this long already?) First things first, its still going with no strange noises coming out of it, the magic smoke has stayed inside. And to be honest i have no complaints at all with regard to performance and durability. But i am still at a loss as to exactly what the sub harmonic generator does. As to me wether it is on or off the combo sounds the same. But apart from that its still going strong and still sounding great
8. damn it! was getting over jazz special gas and then i see they have some nice pj's on there, like the vintage white, so are they really about £60?
9. i've got the mag 2x10 300 combo and the sound is great, if you want wooly our of it you can have it, if you want brittle you can have it, but like others have said if you use the EQ correctly you can get some great cutting tones out of it too. and as far as i am concerned its no where near wooly. add a 1x15 cab to it and i'd imagine the sound to be ace (thats what i'm still after) if you do get the 2x10 stick it on its side, sounds much better played that way
10. He is really good, and as we play a couple of blues brother tracks i then realised just how difficult it is to emulate him. Especially when he goes on a neck walk.
11. i have played one of these, and they dont sound anything like a ray, i thought it would but it doesnt. Similar ish to a P but again not and the tone pots and switch really dont seem to do much to the sound. now either i am deaf or maybe it was the amp it was going through that did it. The neck is quite nice and pretty chunky and its pretty heavy. I did play it for a while but gave up trying to get any range of sounds out of it but like i said the amp i had it going through was pretty crap so it could be down to that but for the price its pretty sweet.
12.
Who said anything about money?
its been brought up by them
So why are they pi5534 off at you?
cos they think my heart aint in it anymore and i couldnt be arsed to do the gig we have played the same place free twice before to do them favours
Same with you. If you want to keep your place in the band then you need a strategy to deal with your unpredictable job. or your band are being unreasonable. Tak ethe initiative, call a meetinga and get an understanding and agreement in place to cover this sort of thing. As I said, get a mate up to speed to dep for you at the last minute so you don't screw your band again.
like i said it rarely happens and as such is even less likely to clash with our sparse gig list. i'm as gutted as the rest of them which is why i cant understand this and the subject of getting a dep aint gonna happen as i know no-one and as far as i know they dont either otherwise they would of had them in way before i joined (they had a long break when their last bassist left) i guess keeping your job is less important for some people. or maybe i am just an arsehole after all
13. i work normal hours monday to friday, but sometimes we have work that has an urgent deadline and weekend work has to be done and booking a day off at the weekend cant be done due to the short notice nature of the work. and the band dont pay the bills. like i say its never happened before and i only get called in rarely it just so happens this one clashes and i aint chosen to do it. was just looking for a bit of support/advice which i guess i aint gonna get. i'll get my coat.
14.
Sure, sort yourself out. It's your problem and they are perfectly justified in getting the hump at this. If you have committed to play a gig you have to make sure your life works around it. Otherwise don't commit to it. If your job is so unpredictable then don't play in a gigging band 'til you have a more stable job or get a dep up to speed to be able to jump in at short notice. That's it.
sorry but i disagree. and i'm not the only one with an unpredictable job in our band. if something comes up then something comes up its not like its a form of income (and i aint seen a penny out of it in 1.5years) and its not like we gig alot. we've had practices canceled as we are setting up cos one of them has had to go work and thats a booked hall. if the place you were playing cancelled then that would be accepted, not liked but accepted and in a year and a half this is the first time anything like this has happened gig wise from our side though we have had a few stopped at the last minute by the venue.
15. supposed to be playing this saturday, but i couldnt do the practice on monday cos i had to work and i have been told i have to work saturday too, so gig cancelled. i'm gutted but i'm pi$$ed off cos now the band are on me back, yeah cheers guys for thinking i dont give a sh*t no more and cant be arsed. any suggestions on how to deal with this kind of thing if you've had it too
16. i try not to look at some of these guys cos i get depressed but then found this guy, he says these are lessons, yeah right, impressive none the less. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4HnTSYvJWc...feature=related and then this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8w_-LHByZPM&NR=1
17. guess i must be gay then. just dont tell the missus. kinda like the t-shirt but a part of me says i shouldn't. love the bungle t-shirts just never got round to buying one
18. i feel like packin it in after those two clips, jeez, brill. cant even talk and play let alone sing and play and then she does slap stuff too. and her voice is cool too. not fair
19. wire cutters, i learnt my lesson many times over with scalpels and stanley knives though the screw driver one works well as long as the tie doesnt damage what you are trying to get out.
20. hmm, i been wondering about graphite necks for some time now ( ireally wanted a status for a long time but went off the idea for nothing more than the price). however i would be interested to know how one of these necks would sound on a mahogany body with the inherent warmth of the wood with the cut of the graphite, would consider replacing my wenge bubinga neck on my ibby.
21. my sr500 came with elixirs and its not top end. have a real close look at the strings near the bridge or neck and you should see if there is the coating on it. if there isnt then they are D'Addarios ok just checked the ibanez site, and they generally say if they are using the elixirs on their basses (selling point?) and the GSR205 doesnt state what strings they are so i would guess the D'Addario.
22. certainly alot of my 'tone' shaping comes from my fingers but i do twiddle the EQ a bit on stage not during a song though, but thats just to and or remove top end really, maybe adjust the pickup balance from front to back (2 soapbars) and playing over the neck or bridge pickup changes the sound more and quicker than fiddling with the EQ. though the active EQ does allow playing over the bridge pickup without boosting too much if at all. then shifting to the neck pup gives a full deep tone, like having 2 basses in one.
23.
Betcha do!! It's been used on 'The Apprentice' ads - heavily phased/flanged bass line with a girl group vocal 'money, money, money, moaney'!! - Google it and you will recognise it, I guarantee it. It was written by Anthony Jackson so he must be getting some new royalties for it!
ok i had to look it up and on the subject if someone had said "do you know...." i would't have. but yeah i recognise it. (dont watch the apprentice it's sh*t ) but that proves my point (or maybe not), alot you wont know the name but would have heard it. ok not all but it still defines the track in the confines of it audience.
