1. Ok, for anyone who thought my 'Not Yet' comment was disingenuous to AJ, check out this clip where he's sight reading a difficult head then plays a solo with some great weird AJ harmonies... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6KgpXrEWd0&feature=g-vrec
2. Hmmm OK just to be controversial... I'm not sure I get it. Sure he's great - my personal favourite is Modern Times with Steve Khan but on this tune I'm not sure what he's doing beyond any serious professional player driving an up tempo big-band jazz tune? (I'm not saying I could play anything like this BTW.) What am I missing here?
3. He does seem like a nice guy and a great musician... I hope I can play that well in my dotage...
4.
cut your hands off and replace them with victor wootens?
Aren't they in use? (Also been done... 'The Hands of Orlac').
5. In fairness, he probably would sign any bass put in front of him... He's not endorsing it - just doing the owner a favour.
6. I have to agree too. I'm all for capitalism and maximising your return on an investment but not if it's through mis-representation or a lack of information. I'd say that this forum works well both ways: in routing out the dubious cases or, more positevly, when you have the genuine article for sale, people raving about it.
7. Janek's got a new album out!? What's it like?
8. Listen to his tone on this... monster! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGdQUMzRVxA Does anyone know how he get's this crunch tone?
9. Been there myself with a sore pinky on the fretting hand. +1 to the advice given so far.. my two penneth. Finding both a cause and cure can be very difficult. Could be arthritis or could be shoulder or back problems manifesting in your fingers. Be prepared for a long (years) recovery time if it's nerve damage. You mention that you’ve picked up bass after a lay off. Perhaps you’re too eager to regain your previous form and are playing beyond your current muscle strength. (Just ‘cause you did a marathon 5 years ago doesn’t mean you can do one tomorrow!) On the plus side, there's plenty you can do whilst it heals:

Hydrate – Like sport, your muscles will not respond well to a lack of fluids... (or bad health generally)
Stretch – nerve stretch which runs from your little finger to your neck – see youtube.
Posture - make sure your back is straight and the bass angled/at height so don't have a sharp right-angle bend in either wrist when playing. (Jimmy Page height give you a bent left hand. Mark King gives you a bent right so mid-way with an angle.)
Practise with the bass on your left knee rather than on a strap in case you’re compressing your shoulders.
Warm-up slowly – break out all those slow note-naming exercises to keep you slow and feed your knowledge whilst you’re at it. Slow scales are good and so is sight-reading as you defocus on your hands and re-frame around the reading the music.
Play until the on-set of any discomfort let alone pain then stop.
Also, if you’re into slap, you can change to this approach since normally the left hand is more percussive with the index finger doing most of the fretting with the rest muting and providing a left-hand slap now and again.
As has been said already, adjust your bass to a lower action and lighter gauge strings. Probably avoid 35”plus scale instruments as they increase the tension. This is a black art as strings vary a lot in tension and flexibility – see other threads on this topic. Also, play with a very light touch... let your amp do the work. Gary Willis speaks well about this whole topic so again YouTube his vids, particularly where he talks about how little left hand pressure you actually need. Good luck and prepare for a long-haul but if you’re careful, the gaps between pain will get longer.
10. Looks good - bass playing well but will try some of this when I next change strings.
11. Hmmm - needs more Rickenbacker...
12. Samuel, Pics please! Re. action/pick-up set-up, that's a big topic but Bernie's basses are all adjustable. It'd down to preference really. I think most Rumour players are on the slappy/technical side and speed-freaks so they tend to set their actions low. Plenty of guides out on the 'net but Bernie's always there to set-up his basses if you need. visog
13. JoeBass, I'm no expert but this doesn't look like a good example of Garrison right-hand fingering as the 3rd finger isn't used. I'd go: A-string: D=T, E=1, F=2 D-string: G=3, A=T E-string: B=1, C=2, D=3 I.e. keep the T123 sequence going. Thoughts from experts? Visog
14. Sort of sad but 88's not bad going. I too met him at a show and was impressed to meet a legend. What did we bass players think of marshalls? We're not big users today? (family fortunes question - we asked a hundred bass players what amp they used. Bet Marshalll not in top 5.) Still some bass players must use them as their signature sound... Can only think of Chris Squire at the mo'. Any more for any more?
15.
Hey Chris, I agree pretty much with everything you've said. There just doesn't seem to be the fire that guys like Hadrian or Matt have. I've been really enjoying Tony Greys music lately, he seems to meld the groove mentality of playing bass with electronica and melodicism in a really listenable way. I'm not sure about the creative bankruptcy thing though, check out my friend Pat Farrell from Australias album here: http://pwfarrell.ban...e-life-electric An obvious student of Willis and Garrison yet with his own distinctive and honest voice. And all self produced.
Enjoyed the Pat Farrell - bit of a creative twist on the usual post-fusion drum 'n' bass jams that the current crop seem to gravitate towards. I recommend you check out Linley Marthe for something less studied and more of a raw talent.
16. Saw the 'Larry Graham' bass at Bernie's last Saturday... What a beaut'! But then so were all the others... Had a play of a couple whilst Bernie set-up my GB (for free!) Bass heaven... Played Bernie's hot-rodded fretless. What a tone!
17. Hi BC'ers, Saw this on RS's flyer: http://www.ronniescotts.co.uk/performances/view/868-clarkecopeland-band?&utm_source=20120329&utm_medium=email Looks good but not sure I can make a Fri/Sat in London, especially a few days before the Olympics when it'll be rammed. Anyone know the set? I'm guessing they've just put a band together to go out and blast. (Saw Stan and Stu with Animal Logic years ago and they played really we together.) Just thought I'd tee you all up and see if anyone knows more about it... visog
18. Sorry, I meant 'Notion'... See here: http://www.notionmusic.com/ Visog
19. I recommend checking out Notation for score editing too. Bit more expensive than Symphony Pro but then it does use samples not MIDI. Both have their quirks but they can be used as a stave-based sketch-pad on the go with the ability to mail your ideas to your main music workstation whatever that may be.
20. Hmmm... not wild about MJ re. 'Pop' as you had to call him 'King of Pop' contractually. I'd rather make up my own mind thanks. Record company/Simon Cowell 'must likes' fry my head. That said, enjoyed 'Human Nature'... but the Miles version here - mostly because of the insane build-up and then tension release in Kenny Garret's sax solo resulting in him exploding at about 8:30: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jkKTcG0xuw&list=FLhrqrINoAwxXhLWZ-LEKMSg&index=67&feature=plpp_video
21. I don't claim to have a particularly refined ear but I sort of think there's a natural compression on a neck-thru, around the mids, which somehow are more open, even aggressive sounding on a bolt-on. Or perhaps the fundamental comes through a little stronger... dunno. As others have pointed out though, Stanley and Mark King sound good on neck-thu's, and Marcus sounds good on a bolt-on. And let's not forget Victor who gets a great tone from his Fodera which I think is a set-neck.
22. Thanks... I think my question was too specific. I've checked out Symphony Pro which looks to do what I need at least in terms of score editing, then I can import a midi file into to GB or whatever... visog
23. Thanks Bassman94. I had hoped to be able to edit scores and therefore do music on the move with an iPad. Taking two laptops with me on trips (works laptop as well) would be too much of a faff I think. visog
24. Don't all reply at once.... Actually I just really need to know, can i edit music score notes on the stave in Garageband 1.2?
25. So I'm thinking of diving into the whole Apple thing to record my bass with backing music. For you expert Applers out there:

should I go Mac or iPad? (I know the Mac does everything but is the iPad good enough?)
does Garageband on iPad have the score view/mode for stave music editing?
I'm not way into the whole production thing or looping - just score-written strings, drums and then recorded bass, some mastering then bang out an mp3. Recommendations please... keep it simple I'm not Trevor Horn! I like composing music not producing it. visog
