1. That's a beaut!
2. Not sure what 'Brickhouse' is but you say you've got A C E G as chord tones so that's Am7. if that's the chord you're playing against then yes you've hit chord tone bingo. The F# would just be a passing note as you say from the A Dorian scale, i.e. the 6th of A Dorian. Not a note you'd rest on but it sounds OK as it's from the key centre. Jeff Berlin's point on this matter is that waffling around the A Dorian scale generally is OK but doesn't specify the chord you're playing against. So as long as you're playing on the Am7, you're bang on. You've seen this right? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFYvUBVMqMk (Trouble is... JB's approach has us all playing the same vanilla chord tones... where's the expression!?)
3. Truckstop, I've a bastard to renovate... bastardisation is in two areas: pick-guard cut down and frets as it's had a defret and refret - the latter not being great. PM me if you're interested. visog
4. It's a mixed blessing. My GB has acres of sustain which puts the onus on you to damp carefully otherwise the whole things reverberates like a kicked grand piano. (Basically it's my fault!)
5. Cool - I did not know that. Thanks neepheid. I'll try that on my next string change. visog
6. Hi all, I've got one of these on my bass and apparently you can change the string spacing. Does anyone know how do you do this? visog
7. Has any band not covered 'YYZ'? Even Atomic Kitten have done a version.... (probably) Here's Mike Portnoy making a good fist of it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvzqabY_ou8
8.
Oooooh something different ,.......... Controversial
Not sure it's that controversial... If I'd said a Rickenbacker 5 or a Gibson 5 maybe. Bernie does a great 'B' on his 35" scale basses even if he's perhaps better known for his 4-string 'slap machines'.
9. For the Gallery, in case you don't know the way, walk down Camden Road then right into Royal College Street and its along there on the left. Expect it to look closed-up. You have to buzz to get in. Very tempting place!
10.
I'll try to explain. When players call a 12-bar blues in Bb, it is not actually in Bb, it's key centre starts in Eb major the key which the Bb7 is the dominant chord in. When it goes to the fifth bar, the chord of Eb7 is the dominant chord of the key of Ab major, so, whilst the tune is 'in' Eb, it isn't. THe head of the chart, however, will have a key signature that tells you which notes to play sharp or flat, it does not tell you that the key changes at the fifth bar etc.
Eh? What! Can you go again only slower...?
11. GBs - Rumour or Spitfire 5's
12. Not as well produced as Fly from Here. Some of the songs sounds a bit demo'y... But there's some nice harmonies and playing here and there. And some of the songs have stuck in my head. Check the previews on Amazon before buying as Yes/Fish Out of Water/Genesis it ain't! My theory is that Squire plays differently with Steve Howe who gives him loads of sonic space. Trevor Rabin's power chording constrained him to basic rock playing behind the power-chords. Steve Hackett is somewhere in the middle. So not classic Squire but good playing and singing none the less.
13.
i always loved that bass-line, but always thought it was slapped ? if not - that makes me feel a whole lot better about never having been able to master it smoothly..
Slapped, sampled and re-played on a keyboard
14. Let's not forget the triple-neck Wal, his extended scale Tobias, Lakland and even a fretless Carvin in there somewhere but I don't know on what records he's used those latter ones. In terms of Squire's approach, I think Trevor Rabin changed it dramatically back to a less melodic, more traditional role and the reason? Yes lost the 'band as chamber-orchestra' approach and had to hide behind Rabin's power chords and his primary melodic position. All hail classic Yes circa 71-76!
15.
Sadly not, I've got an ex-student who's got a stand of Cigar-box guitars and that sort of thing; I think he's running as D810 guitars. You could pop by and say hello if you're interested in detritomusicology (making instruments from junk!).
Unfortunately that rather sums up the NGS these days. (The days of Billy Sheehan, Doug Wimbush and Stu Hamm doing clinics there are long gone.) Bass Day is better for kit and players although I didn't go to last years Band on the Wall mash-up.
16. Jeff Berlin in the 'pre-chorus' years? Heavily mod'ed admittedly
17. I'd play a bass with one before you decide... to my ears it didn't affect the tone as much as it did the weight!!!
18.
it was nice. Bit polite, and very high string tension for some reason. Also photography courses at uni helped
High string tension!? It's a 34" so no different to any other standard bass. Tension will be the strings. I use 40-100 on mine and it's fine. Great for slapping. Think Status did a 5 string version too?
19. Same model and colour scheme - lovely tobacco sunburst but definitely not yours! I've had mine from new. They're a great bass as you'll know. Nice flat fingerboard. Not much tonal variation, even from the actives but what it does, it does well. visog
20.
My first bass was a status Shark. It looked like this: lovely for a first bass. And a while back I started asking around to see if anyone had one. And someone I was talking too (not on bas chat) got back to me, and has one of the earlier ones, single chrome pickup in what looks like the P position (?) and active circuit. Well, I had thought to spend my money elsewhere on a ACG preamp for the Warwick, but he's offered what seems a good price on it (i.e. less than the ACG preamp) I wondered if any one had opinions on this model of Shark bass model? I'm torn Look like this:
Yes got one myself. Shark Pro-active. Killer action
21.
Awesomeness starts @ 3:30...
Interesting that Hugh Cornwell singles out John McLaughlin and Paul McCartney as 'creeps'. Too specific... he's noticed both these players. If you were a punk you wouldn't bother to remember names. Me-thinks he's had a go at the fusion guitar and Beatles song-writing before going punk. And weird that they felt the need to do band member solos... It's just like a Yes concert but with more... erm tits. visog P.S. Punk was an illusion.... Joe Strummer, son of a diplomat, Jon Anderson, son of a milkman
22. Bilbo, Not sure this is the book as your quote is more specific. The Bass Heroes book quote indeed on p.181 reads, "When I was about 10, my sister, who's four years older than me, got into jazz and picked up a lot of Miles Davis records, so I heard Paul Chambers (the bassist for Miles during the '50s). Once I heard him, I said to myself, 'That's what I want to do.' It was clear and simple as that." visog
23. Much as I like SP, this is just a repetitive slid 7th chord with a bit of flutter... No I couldn't do it but I wouldn't want to... Bring back Hard Normal Daddy. And he looks like Bill Bailey in this which is distracting.
24. Nice Rumour in your Avatar picture! Also I think the Avenger looks pretty cool. Better than a Hillman Avenger for those over 40.
