1. I liked the album a lot at the time but looking back, it was the point when the keyboards went from effective atmospheric background within a guitar-led trio to effectively a quartet with the keyboards taking up a lot of the sonic space. Plus they were those really fat (phat?) analogue synths of the day which ate up bandwidth. The space and economy of Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves gone. And it got worse... Power Windows anyone?
2. Good heavens that's a beaut' Acres of punchy j-bass frets and a ramp...
3. That's a beaut'... You just know that's going to be as punchy as hell... What's going on with extended complicated strap button though?
4. "honk with a pick"? What a load of bollocks. It's a recipe for banality.
5. Couple of threads on this previously so search around. I would add to the above:

Methodical posture and bass position - avoid sharp wrist angles
Hydration - have a bottle of water on the go pretty much all day
Cod liver oil & Glucosamine
Agree with formal medical diagnosis although this can be a tortuous process if mis-diagnosed.
6.
Deidre Cartwright!
She was guitar. Henry 'King Thumb' Thomas you mean...
7.
Depends if he has ketchup or brown sauce on his chips...maybe.
You're right! Maggie Philbin - Brown Sauce Percy Jones?
8. God no. No disrespect to the guy (who's more than competent) but this is 5th generation regurgitated Jaco harmonics and Louis Johnson funk best heard 25 years ago. Hadrien Feraud and Thundercat point to the future for me (even though there's a fair bit of Jaco in both of them). Drummer is really good.
Warwick could have chosen this beauty in their SC design competition ..
Nice... better than the majority of single cuts. The Ritter looks nice too but probably monstrously expensive. Most fugly must go to Warwick's turdy Streamer SC thing...
10.
Why would anyone buy a guitar if they didn't intend to play it?
There's loads of Jimmy Page Gibsons in glass cases in corporate offices that will never get a single note played on them... Welcome to the world of investment. You can't play gold but it's the #1 commodity...
11. We're mixing 'hi-end' here... Gibson & Fender limited editions are investments... don't even look at them as guitars, just objects. Hi-end luthier basses are different and have different economics... Fashion dictates Fodera at the mo' but that wouldn't make it an investment as such. More, on the lines that you won't lose money... like Alembics. It could go another way depending on which way the latest players buy: Ken Smith, etc. My GB bought for playability and tone rather than rarity... So just make sure to be clear what you're buying an instrument for....
12. Interesting stroll through the Progmeister's bass inspirations... I'm guessing that Entwistle's round-wound sound and Jamerson's immense melodic and harmonic vocabulary, combined with the Fish's chorister training made for the Bass God we all know and love. McCartney gave permission to be up-front and musical, so add a Rickenbacker and, hey presto, the mighty Squire. 13. Agree with the sentiment... love Stanley but he's done some 'grande fromages' in his time. Here's one from the Clarke/Duke project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mb8n5DDTXoo RIP George Duke but this is a bit hokey. I really liked 'Wild Dog' from this album. There's always 'School Days's to fall back on...
14. I suggest you keep an eye on the Status site Statii as it tends to draw Mark King fans and consequently interest in all of Mark's basses including JDs, GBs and the like. I hope BC won't mind me posting the link to their non-Status 'for sale' thread... http://www.statii.com/forum/forum/viewforum.php?forum_id=25
15. Check out the Malcolm Hall vids on YT. I'm not sure of the model to which you refer but as a whole they sound amazing... Good luck...
16.
http://www.practicesightreading.com/ give this site a go its well worth the fee to join for the extra features as well
Chrismanbass - presumably you're a user. Does it do bass clef? (I couldn't tell from the site and I'm not able to get to my bass so don't want to waste the free trial until I can play along...)
17. Me too - But I guess it's a necessity for older or vintage instuments, particularly those with an interesting heritage or provenance.
18. Well spotted RoRi... I was just thinking about 'Rockschool' today. Very BBC. Deirdre Cartwright, Thomas 'King Thumb' somebody and a drummer. Highlight for me was Allan Holdsworth in series II. And Gary Moore's guitars were uber-noisy.
19. URB - thanks for the heads-up. Keep 'em coming. (Still smarting from missing TT & Gary Willis.) Don't know Snarky Puppy - who's on bass?
20. I think this song is unbelievably good. Clanking bass, beautiful vocals and god-like melody. Could be Yes. Just brilliant
21.
Speeak for yourself. I'm confident I can't play Teen Town now, not that I've ever tried. I'll have to dig it out and have a listen or perhaps I won't bother. More importantly, it really is quite ridiculous the way people keep alotting their own experience to everybody else. I've never had any interest in AC/DC and I couldn't recognise their latest riff if you paid me. So, who were Pastorius's influences there? Jerry Jemmott? James Jamerson? Who else?
I struggle to play Teen Town properly but it has entered the common vocab. AC/DC is just indicative of the musical environment... no slight intended but bass was particularly apirational save for a few players. Good point about Jamerson and JJ - pioneering 16ths - I guess Jaco just did it faster, a little higher in the mix and with more mid-punch...
22. There's a phenomena of human achievement which is that it takes much, much more effort to break a boundary than copy it. We can all play 'Teen Town' now, but it took some real talent to write and play it when most other people were struggling with the latest ACDC riff. In fact, most people didn't conceive or think in terms of entirely 16th note bass lines at the time.
23. Missed it too.... gutted. Can't believe I was just sat at home... We need some sort of alert thread going when some Uber-bassist is doing the rounds. Caught Matt Garrison in Manchester too with Gary Husband in a similar stealth gig... me and 5 other lucky people! FYI... advance notice - Holdsworth is there November 5th
24.
And the response is "Eh....whatever." Amazing. Jaco's best, if not some of THE best bass playing anyone has ever recorded.
Really!? - I always thought it was a waste of Jaco. And I find ADM's compositions a bit rambling. Each to his own - I'll stick with the Metheny/Mitchell/Zawinul/solo versions of Jaco which are the best IMHO.
25. The pick-up covers are worn but the sound is clear and burpy. Perhaps I'll just get her cleaned and properly set-up then decide. Just wondered if there was any particular synergy with a Warwick and Barts that made it a good option. What I'm hearing is that the difference will be minimal and I'm just gassing... It's a lovely bass that sadly I don't play much on account of the Spitfire hogging the limelight.
