Alembic Exploiter thing going on...
2. Depends what you mean by great or terrible technique. What was good in the 70's is pretty rudimentary compared with today's players like Willis, Erskine, Grey et al.... Also musicality goes way beyond technique... Sting's right-hand technique consists of occasional thumb downstrokes these days and he's probably the richest bass player out there right now. Maybe McCartney and he's no Mat Garrison but on the other hand, he's ranked with the most important composers of the last century.
3. For the considerable number of Squire fans on this board, BP magazine in the States have awarded our man a Lifetime Achievement Award. Modestly, Squire says that John Entwistle would have won it had he still been alive! Here's the magazine's clinic post-award (you may have to hunt around a bit for the video): http://www.bassplayer.com/artists And here's the first of four vids of the award and subsequent gig - with Foo Fighters' drummer: All hail the King of Clank! visog
4.
Now you're cool, buddy?
Now I am cool! And it sounds like a pretty high-pressure reading scenario! (I've still not heard of the programme, artist or song though!) visog
5. "really famous pop artist, and my trombone player brings me a sheet" Really!? - I don't think a trombone has been heard in the charts for 40+ years. Who's the really famous pop artist - you can say... this is not a national security issue.
6. Quite funky... like the tone. Going more for the ToP FRP tone and he does it great. He can really play. The mugging gets a bit distracting but I guess that's his thing. Wish I had his rhythm!
7.
I have another thread with this in, but it makes sense to add it here. It's from Oxjam Chiswick last Saturday.
Coo... that was good. I find most bands in pubs an intrusion and can't wait for them to finish but this is was great. Like the way you're rocking the Muppet Saxophonist look. P.S. You need more band members... preferably on a smaller stage...
8. Cool - looks the part. Excuse my ignorance but did it sound anything like a Rick?
9.
Prize for the ugliest thread title ever?
At least he spelled 'Angels' right.
10.
I think Yes have been somewhat overlooked as a band by the same young audience and so Chris Squier's direct influence has diminished. If you look on Youtube ther's loads of teenagers doing bass covers of John Paul Jones' and Geddy Lee's lines , but Chris Squier covers tend to be by men of a certain age.
au contraire - here's the brilliant Miguel keeping it real and Squire with brilliant covers of old and new CS songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSW0vO6-N6Q&feature=plcp
11. He's my reason for playing bass too! Couldn't listen to any other bassist for some time as nothing came close to the exciting lines he played...
12. You'll have to change your username. P.S. Good luck with that thing.
13. You've been very privileged. Most of the instruments you cite are pro-level basses that would do a player for a lifetime. I'd stick some dots in front of myself and worry about making some music rather than fine tuning the instrument choice to the fine end of a fart. It doesn't matter in the end... hence the term 'instrument'. It's a conduit, not an end in itself...
14. I like them too though not universally. But from time to time they are astounding! Pyramid Song for example... Could have been first line-up of King Crimson.
15.
I think this is rather good
Agreed - great version of LC. Great composition and quite an unusual chordal pulsing bass line which no-one seems to mention much. Not so fond of Domingo though... slightly '70s made for TV movie for me - actually as I listen again, it's getting better. Lol-Cot met the great man a few times. There's a picture of him juggling with Jaco on his website!
16.
It seems Wooten bashing is an Olympic sport on Basschat.
No, no the forum is happy to bash everyone... let's face it, Jaco could rise again and someone would grumble that it's a bit showy and he should play more like Mike Dirnt.
17.
I love chicken sandwiches. If I had them for starter, main course and dessert every day for a month, I would soon hate them. All things in moderation. I can take a few minutes of these jugglers but, after the 'wow' has worn off, I quickly switch off. I think someone is right in that we need guys to push the boundaries but we also need guys who consolidate, who use the ideas of the trailbalzers in a more musical and less grandstanding way.
That's a rallying cry for the youth of 2012! Don't say something new, let's consolidate! Shall we start with Jimmy Blanton or go back to Bach?
18. Good version.... bad facials and the P-bass is well dunky. Get a J and be as expressionless as the keyboard player from Sparks. (And is a Hitler 'tache too much to ask?)
19. Excellent snarky grunty-pig tone! Great playing... That 'B' is really happening. What did you record with? (Sort the jeans and T-shirt).
20. "Personally, I'm not into slapping, but many of you are, so enjoy " You've got to be into slapping - IT'S THE LAW! How else can you prove your masculinity?
21.

This was Jaco wasn't it? Can't imagine he was very fond of it. Hated fusion and said so! Plus it doesn't swing, another bug-bear of his, and a whole other debate. Personally I quite like it. This album's also got Stanley on it singing too on a great track.
22. Both posted before in other threads but worth re-stating here: This is pretty crunchy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGdQUMzRVxA&feature=player_embedded Chris Squire does a good distorted tone too from time to time - his classic here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9E0FCrimVlI visog
23.
I changed from DRs to Warwick EMPs over 5 months ago, the same set are still almost as bright as when I bought them. I'm a total convert, they sound fantastic! Big, bright, throaty and they feel lovely to play. They are quite expensive but they've repaid the investment greatly. I've probably put about 50 hours on them in the studio, rehearsals and live. They've still got ages left in them. If you want to hear what they sound like for slap and for warm tones, I have a couple of recordings here .. http://soundcloud.co...-where-the-eyes http://soundcloud.co...y-2012-umlhalho
silddx, Offtopic but I'm loving Umlhalho and Weird Chord. The latter sounds like a Holdsworth intro. Re. strings I'd always use Rotosounds as a default. Bright with tons of life. visog
