1. The term 'project' is pretty flexible isn't it?
2.
No.
Well said... I think the answer is probably record companies...
3.

Not sure the ancient Khmer Cambodians had this in mind when they build their temple? ...having said that, this type of music did go out of fashion at about the same time.
4. You really must try a GB Spitfire... Jaco tone to spare all with a killer 'B' string. Boost the mids and the lows to let the notes just pop out when you play near the bridge. (They also have a killer slap tone and rocky P-bass tones with the neck p/u.)
5. That is an awesome tone... gritty, fudgey low-end. Really great musical line too. Loved Yes' arrangements from this time - no block chords and roots anywhere on this album! Was a rumour that CS nicked the changes for the first part from KC's 21st Century Schizoid Man... which you can hear is similar although not played as 16ths.
6. Deja Vu... we've done this... http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 ... but what the hell, go buy it!
7.
Many thanks for this, a real find. Clever bloke. Definite 'Like'.
Very talented but very Michael Hedges. Hedges like Jaco: They both stole and were heavily infulenced too - Hendrix for example in both case but they brought it together in their own singular statements on music.
8. Oh great - the paint & sand-down story again! He slurs his wurms a bit now but man what a player... Love the fact he doesn't know anything about his own gear... Even his tech doesn't sound that sure!
9.
Well I just listened to the Joni Mitchell Des Moines track that someone recommended. The bass was quite good. As were the drums, the horns, the singing, all good. I didn't get worked up about it either way. So, er, I'm on the fence.
Jaco did the horn arrangement on this tune too BTW...
10. BBC2 in the early '80s played the Shadows and Light concert (and in the same week, a Clarke/Duke concert!). It was the harmonics on 'Coyote' that got me...
11. I wanted to look at the part out of interest. (Never been a big fan of the song.) But can't get your attachment to work? I do have Adobe installed and working correctly?
12. Anne Wilson does a pretty good Robert Plant - screeches and inflections... Obviously Zep was a big influence... Bet the Zeps were delighted to hear this again...
13. Depends on that pesky G alt chord and which alterations are in play, i.e. b/#9 and b/#5 on top of the G7?
14.
I think it's probably an early (possibly Custom) example of Neil 's work
Neil? It looks like a Goodfellow... a forerunner to the current Rumour basses Bernie makes?
15. http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2013/04/08/ibanez-adds-6-string-to-grooveline-bass-series/
16.
Nice transcription Bilbo. That's a great track - had to learn it!
Nice playing... There comes a point where a listener can't process this stuff though... All that artistry executed in the blink of an eye...
17.
Yes - Yesshows
That's a really great album. Me? Just one at the mo: Sixteen Men of Tain - Holdsworth. Drives my wife and daughter round the bend...
18. Can I be the first to complain about the amount of gratuitous slapping?
19. Wow... that's curly! Enjoy - heard good things about Esh
20. Songs from Yes' back catalogue have been done well by female vocalists - Annie Haslam and Glasshammer... Plus you get to play Chris Squire's amazing lines... (and can GAS for a Rick) win-win!
21. In fairness, you can't expect a local shop to cater for specialist needs. They have to go for stock that turns around and earns them money. That 6-string set of double-ball end, half-wounds is not going to shift quickly and earn them money. It's not 1985 any more and bass, especially extended range is a niche pursuit - perfect for the Internet which aggregates that fractured market to make it viable, on the other hand terrible for the High Street. That said, as the last poster mentioned, along the M62 from Liverpool you've got PMT, Dawsons (Warrington & Manchester) & Sound Great (more M56 admittedly), all of which should be able to help out.
22.
Come on Eileen is fun
John "Rhino" Edwards - Judie Tzuke's Alembic toting bass player. Now with Status Quo... Check the video - I seem to recall he's play one. (But it was 20 years ago...)
23. Get a GB - we know how much you like them...
24. This band always struck me as a Buggles knock-off... Preferred 'World of Water'
25.
Mark ended up switching to GB basses quite quickly. I think he was going through a bad time then, as the GB basses sounded absolutely shocking as well. The first Level 42 record/DVD I got was the Ohne Filter show. Dear me, his bass sounded f***ing crap there. Flat as f*** tonally. Even the red bass he got out for Mr Pink sounded hopeless. He ended up going back to Status; a smart move as Level 42 took off again soon after and he had left those dire basses buried in the sands of time.
So Level 42 "took off again" because he went back to Status? Interesting definition of 'took off'. I like Status basses too and have one myself but they're absolutely "Flat as f*** tonally" except for Slap and Tickle. In contrast my GB has gloops of high, mids and lows and can do a passable Alembic to Jazz through a sweep of the pick-ups. Don't forget that MK's latter output has been recorded on the cheap which wont help the tone... Can't help feeling you're exorcising some inner demons here...
